How To Prepare For The Police Academy In Canada: 5 Actionable Tips

Working in law enforcement is a sought-after career in Canada for many reasons. A career based on protecting the community and helping others, along with ongoing education, a strong pension, job security, and competitive salaries are all perks to becoming a cop. Although being a police officer is a dream of many, only a handful of highly skilled and qualified people will achieve this aspiration.

The biggest obstacle between would-be officers and their vocation of choice is the infamous police academy. On average, 14% of recruits who are accepted wont graduate from the police academy. Therefore, some recruits will attend an academy multiple times before they successfully pass.

The police academy is renowned for being incredibly difficult on multiple levels. If you want to be at the top of your class, you need to:

    American Policing: A Local Affair

What to Expect on Your First Day at the Police Academy

Traditionally, law enforcement in the U.S. is a local affair. As settlers moved west in the 19th century, communities set up their own sheriffs offices, sometimes because there was not yet a state established to control law enforcement. Policing remained localized because Americans were resistant to the idea of a standing army policing their streets, says Paul Hirschfield, a sociology professor at Rutgers University. While in much of Western Europe policing and training is nationalized, in the U.S. today, nearly half of the 18,000 police departments have fewer than 10 officers, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Each goes about training in a different way. Money often dictates how.

Amid a growing movement toward police professionalization that started in the late 1950s, states set minimum training standards but left it up to individual departments to decide how to meet them. Big cities like New York and Los Angeles could afford to set up their own police academies. They screened and hired cadets, then paid their salaries as they attended training.

Small departments could not afford to do this, so they sent recruits to outside academies. Sometimes they paid their tuition, but sometimes they required would-be officers to pay for their own training before being considered for jobs, a practice that is widespread today.

Should You Attend Police Academy On Your Own

In many states you have the ability to enroll in the State Certified Police Academy as an Open Enrollee meaning you are attending on your own, not being Sponsored by a police department. There are many regional police academies that train new officers for a variety of difference police departments If they have space, they allow students to enroll on their own and pay their own way to attend. These students go through the same training as those attending that have been hired by their local police department.

The disadvantage to this is that you have to pay your own way, and you are not paid while you attend. In the past most new recruits when hired would be sent to the police academy and would be paid a salary while attending. The enrollment fees would be paid by their department. As departments are able to require more from job candidates, many departments will only interview or hire those that have gone through and have graduated from a state certified police academy. The advantage is that the department saves money by not having to pay the cadet a salary while in the academy, they do not have to pay the academy tuition, and the recruit is ready to start when hired.

This trend is increasing among police departments. To find out what academies are certified in your state, contact the POST agency in your state. Only you can determine if it is worth going through an academy on your own.

Unlike many other careers, police officers cant receive adequate training from civilian-based education, and traditional on-the-job training isnt applicable for workers in a potentially dangerous work environment. Because of this, police officers receive formal training in police methods and the criminal justice system as cadets when they attend a police academy. While most organizations hire officers and then enroll them in their academy, paying them a cadet salary as they train, some civilians self-sponsor themselves in an academy to bolster their resume.
