Does Ring Security System Connect To Police

SimpliSafe Home Security System Review

Police departments across the U.S. are partnering with home security company Ring to give residents real-time crime and safety updates. The partnership allows police to request footage from Ring cameras in a specific area, but it does not give them live access to the devices.

For many people, home security is a top priority. And while there are a number of different systems on the market, one of the most popular is Ring. But does this system actually connect to police?

The short answer is yes, Ring security systems can connect to police department databases. However, its important to understand how this works and what it means for your privacy.

If you have a Ring security system in your home, you may be wondering if it can connect to police. The short answer is yes, it can. Heres how it works:If your Ring security system detects a break-in or another type of emergency, it will send an alert to your phone. You can then choose to call the police or cancel the alert. If you do call the police, they will be able to see a live video feed from your security cameras. So, if you have a Ring security system, you can rest assured knowing that the police will be able to quickly and easily respond to any emergencies that may occur at your home.

The Security System Reporting Process

Many monitored home security systems include a police response feature. Your home security system wont directly contact the police any time a sensor triggers. The process is a bit more complex than that.

First, the triggered sensor will alert your alarm control panel. Usually, the control panel will wait 30 to 60 seconds before notifying the alarm company of an intrusion, giving you time to disarm the system if you accidentally tripped it. Read more about security system response times.

When the monitoring center receives an alert, an operator will respond based on the companys protocol. Some companies will first contact the residence to confirm theres an emergency and check if any other sensors were triggered. If the monitoring representative cant connect with the home or account holder, they will then notify the police department. Other companies dont wait to contact the authoritiesrepresentatives will simultaneously alert the residence and the police.

From there, a police officer will check on the property. Depending on the departments protocols, alarm circumstances, and call volume, the dispatched unit may drive by or investigate your home and property to address the reason for the alarm. If your municipality requires an alarm permit, the police may also try to contact you to confirm the alarm.

Is Simplisafe A Silent Alarm

Home security is a great way of finding it. But home security keeps you safe in more ways than just triggering sirens for opened windows, motion sensed, and smoke- it lets you call for help in an emergency. There are two duress features of the SimpliSafe system: Silent Mode for the Panic Button and the duress PIN.

Typical Alarm Response Protocol

10 DIY Smart Home Security Ideas: Keep Your Family Safe

For most providers in the home security industry, the typical response after a triggered alarm is to attempt to reach the homeowner or primary contact. Not once, but two or even three times. If the provider cant make contact or the homeowners dont know why the alarm is going off, then and only then are the police informed of a possible break-in.

From start to finish, youre looking at an average of eight minutes before the police are notified. Then add however long it then takes them to respond .

Thats where the traditional alarm system breaks down: most burglars can break in, take what they want, damage your home, and get out in minutes.

And the police? They probably arent coming anyway.

A Few Gripes With Simplisafe

Im extremely pleased with the design and performance of the system. But no home security kit is perfect not even one of our top-rated systems, SimpliSafe.

For instance, SimpliSafes bypass feature could use improvement. When arming the system via the app, it doesnt send up a red flag if youve got a window or door open. It just turns the alarm on, with that opening unprotected.

With Ring and other systems, the app will ask if you want to bypass a tripped sensor before arming. This is important, because you may not know youve got something open.

Now, to be fair, the SimpliSafe base station does announce the bypass, but if youre far away from it, you may not hear it. A two-step bypass warning in the app would be a huge improvement.

Another small gripe with SimpliSafe: motion sensor placement. With most systems, you can put these sensors a good seven feet off the ground, even if you own pets that the motion sensors need to ignore. But with SimpliSafe, dog owners have to mount the motion sensor four feet off the ground. Thats about the height of a light switch. Just imagine a chunky little sensor where a light switch should be. Its a bit awkward.

Itll be nice to see SimpliSafe level-up their camera offerings in the months to come. In the meantime, since you cant just ask intruders to kindly stay off your property, take a look at our guide to the best outdoor security cameras.

What Security Equipment Does Simplisafe Have

SimpliSafe has minimalistic equipment that will still look good in your house. You won’t find touchscreen control panels or fancy smart home devices here, but SimpliSafe covers the basics quite well.

The basic starter kit comes with a base station, which is the hub that connects all the sensors together. You’ll also get a keypad, which you’ll use to enter your passcode and turn the system on and off. From there, you can add whatever sensors you need, including door and window sensors, motion detectors, glass break sensors, smoke alarms, and flood sensors.

Aside from basic sensors, you can add on accessories like key fobs, or upgrade your system with SimpliSafe’s smart door lock and security cameras.

Plan to spend at least $229 on your SimpliSafe starter kitand the price goes up with every sensor you add.

SimpliSafe equipment:

  • Doorbell Camera Pro
  • Smart door lock

Unlike other home security systems, which can accidentally go off, one of SimpliSafes smart features is a glassbreak sensor that knows the difference between a window breaking and a toddler shattering your favorite Pottery Barn plate.

Also, SimpliSafes $99 Wi-Fi connected SimpliCam is the companys first foray into the world of videobut we have mixed feelings about it. The camera is fine but it doesn’t have the best features we’ve seen. Still, for the price, it’s not a bad deal. Just know you’ll need to pay an extra $4.99 per month if you want to do things like download video clips.

False Alarm And Security Systems

Burglar, panic and robbery alarms are useful deterrents to crime however, 95-98 percent of alarm calls are determined to be false alarms, which take police away from other potential emergencies. Alarm legislation was developed to reduce the number of false alarm activations and keep officers available to handle more calls for service.

How do alarm systems work?

When an alarm is activated, an automatic signal is sent to an alarm company or alarm monitoring company. They provide specific information to 9-1-1 police communications representatives who, in turn, dispatch police officers to the location where the alarm was activated.

  • Weather conditions
  • Power outages or interruptions
  • Poor maintenance or low batteries
  • Inadvertently setting off motion detectors

For weather-related incidents:

  • Ensure doors and windows fit snugly in their frames and that contacts are firmly in place
  • Replace loose alarm contacts with wide door or window contacts to fill voids to reduce excessive movement of your doors and windows

For power surges, interruptions or outages:

  • Properly install and maintain surge suppressors on the alarm system and the phone lines and have adequate backup battery power o Replace batteries if they have less than four hours of power
  • Verify with your alarm company that your system has been properly installed to meet Fairfax County Code requirements.

Simplisafe Does Not Necessarily Require A Wi

Many traditional home security systems use hardwired landlines to monitor the home. With the decrease in landlines in favor of cellular phone service, others have shifted to using the homes Wi-Fi system to monitor, with upgradable equipment to use cellular monitoring if you so desire. SimpliSafes program uses cellular monitoring by default, with no landline or Wi-Fi required. The cellular connection is built into the system, meaning its not using your cellular minutes or data plan. So even when the power goes out, youre still protected by the cellular monitoring and the battery backup thats included in the system.

Best Home Security Systems for 2017 [Pro AND Self Monitored]

SimpliSafe doesnt have a touchscreen control panel, garage door alarm, humidity sensor, smart plug, smart light, or smart thermostat. And, because SimpliSafe doesnt work with Z-Wave or IFTTT, its difficult to add third-party accessories to your system.

The only workaround is to use Google Home or Amazon Alexa as the middleman between SimpliSafe and other smart home devices.

Should You Pay For 24/7 Professional Monitoring

There are two subscription plans that you can choose from. The standard is $14.99 per month and comes with 24/7 professional monitoring. This means that if the alarm goes off, youll be contacted by SimpliSafe to confirm whether its a real or false alarm. If its real , authorities will be dispatched to your home to check things out.

The second tier is $24.99 per month, and on top of the 24/7 monitoring, you can also access your system from the mobile app and arm/disarm it remotely. You can also get alerts whenever the alarm goes off.

Without a paid subscription, your SimpliSafe security system is nothing more than an automatic loud noise machine to scare off burglars if they break in. This is probably fine for some people, but if you want the full security system experience , then youll definitely want to pay the monthly fee for the 24/7 monitoring.

And if you plan on tying in SimpliSafe cameras, youll definitely want to pay for monitoring . Otherwise, the camera is only good for live viewing from the appit wont trigger the alarm if it detects motion or record video at all.

Does Ring Have A Duress Code

Simplisafe Alarm Triggered No Call

If your SimpliSafe alarm is triggered, but you dont receive a call from the monitoring center, there are a few possible explanations. First, check to see if your system is still armed. If it is, then the monitoring center may be experiencing a power or phone line outage. You can try to reach them by calling their customer service number. If you cant get through, or if you receive a recording stating that they are closed, then wait a few minutes and try again. Its also possible that your alarm wasnt properly turned on, or that there is a problem with your account.
