Navy officers are elite members of a national naval military service, and their main jobs are leading and instructing less experienced sailors, commanding vessels, and piloting aircraft as needed for national security or, in times of war, air-sea combat. Merchant Marine Credentials are credentials issued by the United States Coast Guard through the National Maritime Center. In general, there are two types of merchant fleets: those that operate in national waters and those that operate in international waters. The type of credential you need depends on the fleet type. There are several credentials for which you may be eligible depending on your military occupation, training, and experience.
The two general types of credentials issued to US mariners corresponding to the two fleet types are:
- National EndorsementsNational endorsements can be used for positions including passenger for hire vessels, charter boats, offshore supply vessels, tow boats and domestic operations.
- Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers are internationally recognized endorsements. STCW endorsements grant greater employment flexibility and are highly desired by employers working with large cargo vessels, international tows, tankers, and cruise ships.
Qualifying As A Navy Master At Arms
Once they’ve completed boot camp, recruits seeking law enforcement and security positions report to San Antonio, Texas for nine weeks of A-school training. They’ll learn anti-terrorism techniques, crime prevention, civil law, communications, and receive firearms training. There are opportunities for the top students in the class to continue their training in specialized jobs within the rating, such as dog handler.
Those seeking a position as a master at arms need to achieve a combined score of 100 on the word knowledge and arithmetic reasoning segments of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. They will also need to be able to qualify for a secret security clearance and be a U.S. citizen. They’ll need a record free of nonjudicial punishments or convictions within three years of applying to be an MA. A domestic violence conviction disqualifies any MA candidate.
Master at arms recruits should have a valid driver’s license, no speech impediments, and are required to pass a drug test. They should have no history of mental disorders, alcoholism or drug abuse, and need normal color perception and vision correctable to 20/20.

Running The Operation: Do’s And Dont’s
The following principles apply to the handling of all double agent operations in varying degrees. In composite they form a check-list against which ongoing operations might be periodically reviewedand given special examination with the appearance of danger signals.

There are hundreds of state and federal agencies that employ special agents. Agencies as obscure as the Virginia Lottery Commission or as famous as the Federal Bureau of Investigation all hire the most highly qualified candidates. Successful candidates often have advanced degrees in specialties such as accounting, computer sciences, foreign languages, or chemistry, or engineering.
The most qualified special agent candidates also have prior military or law enforcement experience. The average entry level salary for special agents is above $50,000 per year, with plenty of opportunities to advance to special agent in charge or higher.

Requirements To Become A Military Police Member
Each branch of military service has its own requirements to join a military police or security forces career field.
The basic educational requirements for joining the military as an officer or enlisted member apply. Beyond that, minimum ASVAB scores in certain areas will apply. For the Army the bare minimum requirements to be accepted into the 31B Military Police MOS include:
- 91 ASVAB Score: Skilled Technical
- 10 weeks of Basic Training
- 20 weeks of One Station Unit Training
- Additional on-the-job training
For the Air Force, requirements for the Security Forces career field include:
- Must be between the ages of 17 and 39
- Normal color vision

Active duty members of the uniformed services are eligible for a waiver of fees for evaluation of an application for an MMC, the administration of an examination required for an endorsement, and for the issuance of an MMC.The waiver applies to members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, and the commissioned corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Public Health Service. Defensive counterintelligence specifically for intelligence services involves risk assessment of their culture, sources, methods and resources. Education For Military Police
No matter the course, you can expect military law enforcement training to include managing traffic, criminal investigations, prisoner handling, and riot control, as well as covering unique military subjects like crew-served weaponry, Military Operations in Urban Terrain , and the laws of war.
- Army training for new recruits takes place at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and lasts 20 weeks. It includes basic training and combat training on top of actual classroom and on-the-job instruction for the MOS.

Civil Service Series 0083
A DoD police officer is assigned the federal occupational series code “0083”, the code reserved for police and federal protective officers in the civil service. This occupational series code applies regardless of what specific agency of the Department of Defense the officer works for. Individual installations conduct the hiring process based upon local need, thus a person applying for a DoD police officer positions applies to specific installations. Some installations have detectives, which can share the same “0083” occupational series code as police officers or “1811” series as criminal investigators. These detectives investigate minor crimes that are not pursued by the special agent of each branches’ investigative agency .

If it can lead a national adversary into putting large resources into protecting a nonexistent threat, or if it can lead terrorists to assume that all of their “sleeper” agents in a country have become unreliable and must be replaced , there is a greater level of success than can be seen from defensive operations alone, To carry out offensive counterintelligence, however, the service must do more than detect it must manipulate persons associated with the adversary.
