How Do I Join The Police Force

Assessment Of Work History

Joining the Police Force: My Story

We conduct an assessment of work history early in the process as it is a very good predictor of success.

Later stages require applicants to relate lived experiences to answer the behavioural questions. These include:

  • the video screening interview
  • 1:1 psych interview
  • and panel interview.

Without experience gained mainly from employment, applicants are unlikely to succeed. This is why we recommend that applicants have some form of paid employment during the process.

If you are not employed when you apply, that does not mean an automatic exclusion.

If your previous work history shows strong work ethic and drive, you can still succeed. You might have finished a role and are looking for a career change, or returning from a break due to caring responsibilities.

Civil Services Examination And Ips

Civil Services Examination is one of the most popular exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. UPSC conducts this exam to recruit candidates to about 24 top government services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS etc.

UPSC Civil Services Exam consists of 3 stages. The stages are:

  • Preliminary Exam

Youre not going to walk into your local police station one day, hand in a job application, then be patrolling the streets within days or even weeks. While different departments and different levels of government have varying standards, the process of going from new recruit to full-fledged police officer can take 4, 6, or 12 monthsor even longer.

Can You Join The Police Force If You Have Diabetes

Local police join forces to add National Night Out event to list of fun ...

By Elisabeth Almekinder RN, BA, CDE

Do diabetes and law enforcement mix, or does having diabetes disqualify one from working in law enforcement?

Although having diabetes should not be a disqualifier for working as a law enforcement officer, the nature of the occupation would require some form of assessment of each individuals medical history, and evaluation of each persons ability to serve as a law enforcement officer on a case-by-case basis.

Still, discussion forums I researched are filled with stories of law enforcement officers who have lost their job due to poorly managing their diabetes, are not promoted because of it, or who are discriminated against in one way or another while on duty.

Conversely, there are many stories of law enforcement officers who have managed well on the job, either on insulin, a pump and/or a CGM . With time in the field, law enforcement officers learn ways to deal with skipped meals, stress, increased activity and more.

    What Is The Hiring Process

There are some barriers to employment in public safety that do not apply to most ordinary careers. You should be aware that the application, selection and appointment process may take four to six months to complete, and in some circumstances, up to a year.

After a relatively simple initial application process, a promising candidate must successfully complete the following:

    1. Take a written test.

    2. Pass a physical agility test.

    3. Sit for an oral board interview.

    4. Pass a background evaluation.

The pre-employment background check will look at a number of things, including criminal record, credit history, military record, current and previous employment history and references.

While there are certain infractions that automatically disqualify candidates, including all felony convictions as well as misdemeanors that prohibit the possession of a firearm, such as those involving domestic violence, agencies may be willing to work with you if youve demonstrated a clean record in the years leading up to your application. For example, the city of Durham, North Carolina, will consider applicants with a DUI conviction more than five years prior to application class A and class B misdemeanors may also be permissible if they likewise occurred more than five years prior.

Dishonorable discharge from the military, however, is another automatic disqualifier, as is a flagrant history of financial irresponsibility as demonstrated through a candidates credit report.

Preparing For A Police Officer Career: Find The Right Environment

When an aspiring police officer chooses to go to school to obtain formal education, a world of possibilities opens up. Here are some of the potential places where the certificate or degree can be earned.

    Vocational/Trade School

Some vocational or trade schools have certificate programs that may count towards college credit, such as for a future associate or bachelor’s degree. Some might offer associate degrees. Vocational or trade schools can provide a way to save money on college costs while receiving necessary college course instruction.

    Military

Military experience is well regarded by law enforcement agencies and police departments. Familiarity with firearms, mental toughness, physical conditioning, discipline and an understanding of command structure and culture are all benefits that come with hiring a recruit with military experience.

    Community College

Community colleges provide multiple options for students who want to become police officers. Students can complete their associate degree in two years or a certificate in a few months. As an added bonus, many community colleges allow credits earned in a certificate program to go towards an associate degree.

    Law Enforcement School

    4-year schools

Departments that require a bachelor’s degree are often found at the federal level. However, even if a four-year degree isn’t required, getting a bachelor’s degree can be a prudent decision: it can increase the chances of getting hired and promoted.

How Serious This Responsibility Would Be

While its fair to say most aspiring police officers have an understanding that this is a job that is not to be taken lightly, McKenna says the true weight of his responsibilities wasnt always his first consideration going into this career.

I had decided on a career in law enforcement because I thought it would be exciting, McKenna says. Even though I liked the idea of helping people, it was car chases, dangerous calls, and arresting bad guys that really appealed to me. But McKenna says it didnt take long for him to feel the weight of the job.

Everything I did was no longer the actions of a young, rather naïve college kid, but the actions of a real police officer with the power to take away someones liberty or even, in extreme cases, their lives. McKenna says the job became scarier after that, but it also became more of an honor and a reason to invest extra effort into doing things the right way.

In April, a Black man sued the city and five officers saying he was wrongfully charged with murder based on his race and what his attorneys called fabricated evidence.

BOSTON Federal prosecutors on Tuesday announced an investigation into whether the police department in Massachusetts second-largest city routinely uses excessive force or discriminates against residents based on race or gender.

The civil investigation into the Worcester Police Department will review how the agency addresses misconduct complaints and discipline review department policies, procedures and training and evaluate how officers interact with the public, collect evidence, and complete investigations, the U.S. attorneys office in Boston said in a statement.

Based on information provided to the Justice Department, we find significant justification to investigate whether the Worcester Police Department engages in a pattern or practice of racially discriminatory and gender-biased policing, and uses excessive force, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division said in a statement.

The majority of Worcesters officers do their jobs with honor, pride, restraint and distinction, said U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins, but she added that the investigations ultimate goal is to ensure that policing in Worcester is constitutional, safe, and effective all while the civil rights of their residents remain intact

    The Job Can Fatigue You

Those long and irregular hours can take even more of a toll than just interfering with a Christmas gathering or a weekend get-together.

Law enforcement fatigue is a real problem, and its brought on by excessive overtime, poor sleep habits, bad dietary choices, and too much stress.

The effects of fatigue cant be understated. In fact, fatigue often mimics impairment and can lead to even greater dangers both on and off the job.

The traditional route into policing was to apply directly to one of the country’s police forces, follow the Initial Police Learning and Development Programme by completing a two-year probation period before becoming a police constable. This training contributed towards passing your Diploma in Policing.

    Hypoglycemia Risk For Law Enforcement

Even without both hypoglycemic unawareness and a severe event in the last year, any incidence of low blood sugars is considered risky for law enforcement officers. Severe hypoglycemia is defined as less than 65 mg/dl. Type 1s on intensive insulin regimens or using an insulin pump are considered to be at the highest risk, more so than Type 2s.

Type 2s are at significant risk if they are taking one of three classes of oral diabetes medications. Glyburide is the biggest culprit for hypoglycemia in Type 2 persons. Hypoglycemic effects of oral diabetes medications tend to increase as law enforcement officers miss meals, and they must carry fast acting carbohydrates with them at all times.
