A reader posed this question via Twitter in response to a recent fact check on New York Police Department Commissioner William Brattons claim that more than 100 officers are killed every year due to anger, hatred and violence. Brattons claim didnt hold true.

While more than 100 officers die on duty every year, accidents generally outnumber murders of police each year. Officers killed by offenders acting out of anger and hatred, such as ambush attacks, are a small percentage of officer deaths each year.

It was a timely inquiry, given the recent debates over race and homicides of and by police. And it was an important one, in the aftermath of the deaths of young black males recently killed by police and the assassination-style killings of two NYPD officers by a black offender.

The first question is impossible to answer accurately, though many have tried by piecing together different types of data. The FBI maintains a limited database of self-reported homicides by police, and it is a conservative estimate at best.

But there is reliable data to answer the second question, using the FBIs database of police deaths and injuries.

More white offenders than black offenders killed police between 1980 and 2013.

UNITED STATES The riots that have followed many peaceful protests across the country over the last several days have resulted in millions of dollars in damage and more than 9,000 arrests. They have also led to the deaths of at least two law enforcement officers and injuries to more than 400 others. The unrest was sparked by the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died after being taken into custody by the Minneapolis Police May 25, 2020.

The deaths of Moody, AL Police Sergeant Stephen Williams, who was shot while responding to a call at a Moody area motel, and Alexander, AR officer Scott Hutton, who was found shot inside a home in that community, are under investigation but have not yet been linked to any protest.

Iran Hangs Man In Public In Second Execution Linked To Protests

Iran has hanged a man in public who had been convicted of killing two members of security forces, the second execution linked to anti-government protests in less than a week.

The execution of Majidreza Rahnavard on December 12, reported by the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, came after a revolutionary court in Mashahd convicted him of “waging war against God,” a charge which punishable by death, for allegedly murdering two members of the notorious Basij paramilitary militia with a knife during protests in November.

Iran’s revolutionary courts have been internationally criticized for not allowing those on trial to pick their own lawyers or even see the evidence against them.

Mashhad, a Shi’ite holy city, is located some 740 kilometers east of the Iranian capital, Tehran. Activists say it has seen strikes, shops closed, and demonstrations amid the unrest sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

On December 8, Iran carried out its first execution of a protester from the unrest, hanging Moshen Shekari after his appeal of his sentence was rejected by Iran’s Supreme Court.

Shekari was accused of “warfare” for allegedly wounding a security officer.

Activists warn that at least a dozen people already have been sentenced to death in closed-door hearings.

Police Have Killed Over 1000 People So Far This Year

Police have killed more than 1,000 people so far in 2020, according to the Mapping Police Violence project.

The research groups database reveals that officers have killed 1,039 people in the U.S. as of December 8including 21 people who were aged 18 or under.

According to Mapping Police Violence, by the end of November, there had only been 17 days in the year when police officers did not kill someone.

And in a year that saw a nationwide reckoning on race following the police killings of George Floyd and other Black people, the database reveals that 28 percent of those killed by police in 2020 were Blackdespite Black people only making up 13 percent of the U.S. population.

Floyd, who was unarmed, died after a white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes while he gasped for air on May 25. That day, a total of seven police killings took place in the U.S.

The vast majority of the victims were men, according to the database.

Forty women were killed by police this year, including Breonna Taylor, and two victims were listed as transgender.

Taylors name became a rallying cry after the unarmed Black emergency medical technician was shot multiple times on March 13 by Louisville officers serving a narcotics warrant on her home.

List Of British Police Officers Killed In The Line Of Duty

This article lists British police officers killed in the line of duty since 1900.

Thousands of police officers in Britain are believed to have died during the course of their duties, but this article includes only those who were killed as a direct result of a crime or while attempting to prevent, stop or solve a specific criminal act. The list omits those who died in more regular circumstances such as traffic collisions, and the many killed by air raids during the Second World War. The list also omits the more than 300 officers of the former Royal Ulster Constabulary, and current Police Service of Northern Ireland who were killed during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

The 2020 Riots Threaten To Undo Hard

One of the overlooked factors of George Floyds senseless and tragic death was that the wheels of justice were turning even as the protests across the United States descended into riots and street anarchy.

Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American, was killed last week while lying face-down on a street in Powderhorn, a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, after he was arrested by four police officers for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill at a local deli.

According to a police complaint, Floyd “did not voluntarily get in the car, which led to a struggle. He was taken to the ground by the officers, one of whom kept a knee pressed on Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes.

Video footage shows Floyd pleading with officers in the final moments of his life and .

“I can’t breathe,” Floyd said repeatedly. “Please, please, please.”

Floyds death, which was recorded on several cameras, soon went viral. The outrage was immediate and universal. Calls for swift action flooded televisions and social media.

What was surprising, at least to those who have followed Americas history of police brutality, was that the action taken against the officers was swift.

These actions, of course, do not wash away what happened to George Floyd. Nothing can. But they are evidence that justice may have been delivered this time: that, unlike so many times before, the crimes against him would not be whitewashed, ignored, or trivialized.

Putin Cancels Annual Marathon Press Conference Amid Russian Army Setbacks In Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has cancelled his traditional year-ending marathon press conference for the first time since he started holding it in 2012 as his armed forces continue to face difficulties in Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on December 12 that Putin might “find an opportunity to talk to journalists” in some other way, including during his foreign trips. Peskov also said that the holding of Putin’s annual address to the Federation Council, parliament’s upper chamber, is under review. Four Police Officers Killed In Unclear Circumstances In Iran As Unrest Continues

Four police officers have been killed in unclear circumstances in Irans Sistan and Baluchistan Province amid ongoing unrest sparked by the death of a 22-year-old woman in police custody in September.

A regional police chief told the IRNA state news agency that the four had been killed at a police station along the Iranshahr-Bampour highway. He said an official probe had been launched.

However, the semiofficial Tasnim news agency said a soldier had shot dead three policemen and a fellow soldier. It quoted a local police commander as saying that the soldier opened fire after a dispute with another soldier over personal issues. The soldier was detained immediately. There were no additional details.

Such shootings are rare in Iran. In 2016 a soldier killed himself after shooting to death three of his comrades. Military service of up to 24 months is mandatory for men aged 19 and above in Iran.

Elsewhere, Tasnim reported that a terrorist was killed during an attack by two assailants on a station staffed by Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in the city of Mahshahr in southwestern Khuzestan Province. There were no other details.

Iran has been rocked by protests and other unrest since Mahsa Amini died in mid-September after being arrested by Iran’s notorious morality police for improperly” wearing a mandatory Islamic head scarf, or hijab.

Leonard Charles Parker Jr

Gulfport, Mississippi

According to CBS affiliate WKRG, 53-year-old Leonard Parker Jr. of Covington, Georgia, was killed by a Gulfport police officer.

Fox and CW affiliate WXXV reported that the officer was responding to calls of a disturbance in the area. As an officer was approaching the area, Parker was allegedly driving away and drove toward the officer. The officer then shot Parker, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Erdogan Discusses War Grain In Separate Calls With Zelenskiy Putin

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed Russias invasion of Ukraine and related grain and energy issues in separate phone calls with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, officials of the nations involved said.

Following the early call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, the Turkish presidential office said on December 11 that Erdogan “expressed his sincere wish for the termination of the Russia-Ukraine war as soon as possible.”

In a similar statement following Erdogan’s call with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Turkish leader’s office said he stated that “works continue to meet the Ukrainian peoples need for humanitarian aid in the looming harsh winter.”

Following his talks with the Turkish leader, Zelenskiy said on Telegram that he thanked Turkey for “sheltering Ukrainian children and providing hundreds of generators for our cities.”

He said he noted Turkey’s support for the Grain From Ukraine initiative and that “we also discussed further work and possible expansion of the grain corridor.”

Erdogan has attempted to keep lines of communication open between his NATO nation and the warring Ukrainian and Russian sides. He helped broker a UN deal designed to get Ukraine grain to world markets, especially to some of the poorer nations of Africa.

Ukraine is a leading global exporter of wheat and other grain, but farming and exports were badly hit when tens of thousands of Russian troops attacked in late February.

Allegations Of Foreign Involvement

There have been allegations of foreign influence stoking the unrest online, with the role of outside powers being additive rather than decisive as of May 31. The founder and CEO of Graphika, which helped the U.S. Senate form its report on Russian social media influence during the 2016 elections, noted “very active engagement” from account clusters from Russia, Iran, and China, and as of May 31 noted that his team was launching an investigation on the matter of possible foreign influence. However, on June 3, 2020, Graphika released a report concluding that “State-controlled media outlets and official public diplomacy accounts in China, Iran, and Russia are focusing on the anti-racism protests in the United States, but they are primarily doing so in a way that furthers their existing narratives, rather than stoking American divisions,” adding that “there is no evidence as yet to suggest a large-scale, covert interference campaign”. Several analysts have said that there was a lack of evidence for foreign meddling whether to spread disinformation or sow divisiveness but suggest that the messaging and coverage from these countries has more so to do with global politics.

Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security policy at , stated that they found no evidence of foreign interference on their site, even though its security teams were actively searching for signs of it.

Police Brutality Protests In The United States

Cases of police misconduct and fatal use of force by law enforcement officers in the U.S., particularly against African Americans, have long led the civil rights movement and other activists to protest against a lack of police accountability in incidents they see as involving excessive force. Many protests during the civil rights movement were in response to the perception of police brutality, including the 1965 Watts riots which resulted in the deaths of 34 people, mostly African Americans. The largest post-civil rights movement protest in the 20th century was the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which were in response to the acquittal of police officers responsible for excessive force against Rodney King, an African American man.

The social unrest surrounding the protests resulted in reinvigorated efforts by activists and sympathetic institutions to physically relocate or remove controversial monuments and memorials across the world associated with colonialism and slavery, or otherwise deemed racially or culturally insensitive. Many monuments were simply vandalized by protesters as well. In the U.S., renaming and removal efforts mostly surrounded monuments, relics, and memorials to the Confederacy and historical figures often associated with racism, segregation, or slavery, such as Christopher Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Pike. Outside of the U.S., monuments and symbols associated with European colonialism and the Atlantic slave trade were also vandalized or removed.

Similarly, various public and private organizations, institutions, and groups took to renaming buildings, streets, and brands due to public pressure or on their own initiative.

Federal Civil Rights Trial Chauvins Guilty Plea

The federal civil rights trial was initially scheduled to included all four officersChauvin, Kueng, Lane, and Thaoand begin in Jannuary 2022 with U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson presiding. The four officers were charged federally with abusing their positions as police officers and depriving Floyd of his constitutional rights to be free from the use of unreasonable force. All four officers pled not guilty to the charges at a September 14, 2021, arraignment hearing. Chauvin faced an additional federal charge for a 2017 arrest incident of a 14-year old in Minneapolis that he initially pled not guilty to. In late 2020, prior to the trial, lawyers for Thao, Lane, and Kueng had sought to sever their case from Chauvins. In a hearing on November 29, 2021, Magnuson ruled that all four officers would stand trial together.

The federal civil rights trial of Kueng, Lane, and Thao begins on January 20, 2022, at a courtroom in the Warren E. Burger Federal Building in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Why Was 1930 The Worst Year

2020 was the worst year in law enforcement deaths since 1930, according to statistics.

In 1930, 312 officers were killedstill the deadliest year on record.

The FBI ties much of that to the rise of gangs following the passage of Prohibition in the U.S. in 1920. Law enforcement agencies were outgunned and ill-prepared to take on massive gang operations across the country and the rise of the New York Mafia, according to the agency.

Were These Five Officers Killed During ‘riots’

Four of the officers pictured here died during incidents unrelated to the protests, and two of the pictured officers died prior to Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020. As stated above, the person in the middle of the bottom row, David Dorn, was a retired police officer who was truly killed while responding to a looting call in St. Louis.
