OFFICERS KILLED: New data released this month by the FBI reveals that significantly more officers have been killed in the line of duty this year than last. 19 Investigates talked to the Special Agent in Charge at about why and what can be done to curb the increase.

Hannah Catlett

We spoke to the highest-ranking criminal investigator in our region about the increase and what can be done to curb it.

Eric Smith is the Special agent in charge at the Cleveland area FBI.

Its devastating, he said. Every single officer means something.

The most recent officer killed in our viewing area, youll likely remember, was Officer James Skernivitz.

He was killed during an undercover mission in 2020.

The new data shows that the huge spike in officers killed came in the months that followed Skernivitzs death.

The FBI said so far this year, 59 officers have been killed.

Thats almost a 51% increase from the 37 who had died by this time last year.

Its really alarming, and its why we want to have this conversation, Smith said. Its about one officer thats being killed every five days. Thats just far too high.

We asked if there is anything the federal agency attributes the increase in violence to.

Officer Deaths Tied To Covid

Coronavirus infections were the leading cause of death for police officers last year, according to reports. In 2020, 295 officers in total died, with at least 182 dying from COVID-19, according to the memorial fund.

That marked a 300% increase in a cause of death unrelated to firearms or car crashes, the organization said.

The memorial fund marks “other causes,” which account for illnesses or medical emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes at work, for resulting in the death of 88 police officers so far this year.

From 2010 to 2019, the leading cause of line-of-duty law enforcement officer deaths was fatal shootings, according to the memorial fund. A reported 528 men and women police officers were shot and killed during those years.

Police: Man Who Shot Colorado Gunman Was Killed by Officer ...

According to statistics reported to the FBI, 59 police officers were killed in the line of duty from January 1, 2021, to September 30, 2021. This marks a 51 percent increase in the number of police officers killed when compared to the same period last year.

Nationally, 60,105 law enforcement officers were assaulted while performing their duties in 2020. These assaults were reported to the FBI by 9,895 law enforcement agencies. Based on these reports, there were 4,071 more officers assaulted in 2020 than the 56,034 assaults reported in 2019.

In an interview during Police Week events last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray reflected on the sacrifices of the Bureaus law enforcement partners, who risk their safety to protect the public. We are looking at now 59 officers or agents murdered in the line of duty this year. Thats an over 50 percent increase from last year. That basically translates to every five daysmore often than every five days in this countryan officer is murdered in the line of duty. And thats totally unacceptable, and its a tragedy and it needs attention, Wray said.

The statistics released this week are a stark reminder of the dangerous work done by law enforcement every day, said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew DeSarno. The FBI values our partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. We will continue to assist and offer resources when called upon. Nationally

Three sheriffs deputies surrounded a beat-up Mercedes with a broken taillight in Clark County, Wash., in February. The tools strewn across the passenger seat worried them immediately, they later told investigators.

That right there can hurt someone, said Deputy Holly Troupe.

The drivers retorts set off more alarms. You need to chill out! she recalled him parroting back to her.

To help force him out of the car, Deputy Sean Boyle punched the driver in the nose. Deputy Troupe grabbed him below the jaw in what she called pain compliance. But the driver, Jenoah Donald, a 30-year-old mechanic who had autism and struggled with drug addiction, started the car with one hand and clutched Deputy Boyles ballistic vest with the other, the officer later said.

Deputy Boyle, though he had 70 pounds on the driver, told investigators he had feared he might be stuck half-inside a moving car: I was convinced, This is how you are going to die, he later told investigators. So he shot Mr. Donald in the head.

Prosecutors questioned whether the stop would have ended differently if the officers had explained to the driver why they were ordering him to leave the car. But Deputy Boyle, with two decades on the job, had fired in good faith, the prosecutors concluded.

Some officers involved in fatalities at vehicle stops cite their training, which for decades has stressed the perils of those interactions.

That’s about one murder every five days

BOSTON The FBI is reporting that 59 law enforcement officers have been feloniously killed in the line of duty so far this year, a 51% spike compared to the 39 deaths at this time last year.

The 59 officer deaths mean about one officer has been murdered every five days this year, the head of FBI Boston’s division told the Herald on Monday.

The rising assaults on law enforcement officers are both “disturbing” and “alarming,” added Joseph Bonavolonta, special agent in charge of FBI Boston.

“There’s been a tremendous uptick in the felonious killings of officers,” he said, later adding, “And not only are the numbers dramatically rising over the last couple of years, the percent of unprovoked attacks has significantly risen.”

These unprovoked attacks, combined with pursuits, tactical situations and ambushes, have been the cause for 74% of the felonious deaths so far this year. In 2020, those four circumstances represented 28% of the deaths.

“It’s a real significant cause of concern for us,” Bonavolonta said.

“The increase of violence against law enforcement officers is alarming,” he added, saying the issue “quite frankly has not received the attention that it really deserves.”

The FBI is also reporting 46 accidental officer deaths so far this year, a 24% increase from the 37 deaths at this time last year.

This Is How Many Police Officers Have Been Murdered In The Last Year

Since the nation was gripped in the throes of the #DefundThePolice movement in 2020 following the deaths of George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor, violence against Law Enforcement across America has increased. Couple with the movements successes in convincing police departments like Minneapolis and New York to in fact follow through and strip them of vital funding, and the subsequent resignations of disheartened officers, it has become incredibly dangerous to be a police officer in the United States. The number of officers murdered in the line of duty is steadily growing.

During the reign of the Biden-Harris regime, this has become even more exacerbated as local, county, and state Law Enforcement are called up to carry out increasingly authoritarian orders that conflict with the Constitution they are sworn to uphold, further eroding the support that theyve enjoyed from conservatives, the last bastion of grassroots support they had since the Democrat-Socialists embraced hostility toward them.

Since the killing of George Floyd and the emergence of the Defund the Police movement, violence against law enforcement has increased.

Here are the names of all the police officers killed in the line of duty since May 25, 2020. RIP to these heroes.
