How To Reduce The Cost

If youre worried about the police academy cost, there are a few things that you can do. First, shop around. Just because youre training to work in a states law enforcement force doesnt necessarily mean that every tuition bill across the state is exactly the same. To the contrary, training academies want to attract the best and brightest students. They want their programs to thrive. For this reason, you might be surprised at how much costs can vary from program to program.

Also, its worth your while to investigate financial aid. Because many of these programs are run through universities, you might be able to qualify for need or merit-based aid. These grants of assistance are often similar to what you might receive if you apply to attend any program in the university or college.

Finally, investigate departments that might pay for you training. Large departments sometimes want to run their own programs to make sure that all of their new hires are trained the same way. In addition, large departments often need new officers enough to want to make their departments attractive for new hires. Sometimes, these departments hire first and train later. If youre fortunate to land one of these jobs, you dont pay for your own training at all.

Police Training Practices and Costs: What are the Essential Questions?

Through research and case studies, presenters outlined current police training practices, the known and national estimates on police training costs. Presenters also identified what information is needed to ensure police training is efficient and effective in the future.

Cost of Police Education and Learning in CanadaRachel Huggins, Manager, Policing Policy and Coordination, Public Safety Canada

Rachel Huggins presented an overview of the available data on the cost of police training in Canada and suggested potential cost savings related to innovative education and learning approaches. Ms. Huggins indicated that there is a lack of information available regarding the true cost of police training in Canada. At this time, only a handful of case studies are able to quantify the cost of police training, however two of these case studies were able to demonstrate a cost savings potential through the use of online education.

National-level data on police training costs is required in order to determine:

  • Total costs for training, by Canadian police service and
  • Current training methods, by police service, type and cost.

Such data would not only provide a complete picture of the amount police services spend on training in Canada but would allow for cost comparisons between training delivery methods, including in-class versus online training, as well as demonstrate associated training costs.

Overview Of Previous Police Costing Research In Canada And Metric Challenges

How Much Does It Cost To Go To The Police Academy In ...

Several attempts over the years have created estimates of policing and costs of crime to better inform policy development, program and operational planning of governments, funding, and law enforcement agencies. Despite these efforts, several outstanding issues remain when attempting to determine an accurate estimate of the cost of crime in Canada. Although data on costs of crime and the criminal justice system are available in Canada, they are aggregated primarily at the level of a police agency or provincial jurisdiction, which cannot be categorized into activity- or crime-specific information. For instance, for policing, the only official national cost information is the total annual policing expenditures in Canada collected through the Police Administration Survey conducted annually by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics at Statistics Canada. Micro-level information is required to undertake efficiency, planning and cost-benefit studies of various approaches to criminal justice and policing interventions.

    Summary Of Presentations And Discussions

College of DuPage launches internal investigation into ...

On September 17-18, 2013, Public Safety Canada and CPKN partnered to bring together 100 participants from various police services across the country, provincial representatives, police board members, frontline officers and union representatives to discuss police education and learning in the context of the Economics of Policing. As police services strive to be more efficient and effective, they must consider how they deliver all of their services including how they educate and train their officers.

The means by which training is administered is also part of the discourse. It is without a doubt that technology has changed the way society interacts and communicates, so it is no surprise that technology plays a large role in how officers are educated and trained.

The Economics of Policing: Police Education and Learning Summit was structured around theme-based discussions which focused primarily on presentations by individuals from the police training sector. These individuals ‘set the stage’ for broader group discussions by sharing their organizational initiatives, experience, and perspectives. The discussions over the two days focused on the cost of police training, how we educate police and how officers learn, as well as the role that technology can play in transforming training and the associated costs. The following is a summary of facts, ideas, and questions raised by the presenters. To view the full presentations, click on the active links below.
