Post Application Physical Examination And Fingerprints
Once a background investigation is complete, register on the Georgia POST website as a new user so you can begin your online application. It is essential that you complete this application correctly or your admittance to the Basic Training Course will be delayed. There are several attachments to the application as well as a requirement for a physical examination and a requirement that you are fingerprinted. You should go to Georgia Applicants Processing Service to be fingerprinted. Physical examinations generally cost about $30 and the fee to be fingerprinted is roughly $53. Can I Join The Police Without A Levels
Direct Application Youll generally need A levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification, or experience in a related area like the military. Youll usually apply to one police force at a time. If your application is successful, youll be invited to an assessment centre where youll: have an interview.
Maximum Age Requirements For Law Enforcement Candidates
It may come as a surprise that most agencies do not a maximum age requirement for their candidates. It is also interesting that the reason some agencies have a maximum age limit does not have to do with a candidates ability to pass the physical ability test but rather they want to make certain that a newly hired candidate can retire with full benefits. An agency may have a maximum age for someone starting out because that is the latest someone could start with their agency and still retire with full benefits when they reach the threshold for mandatory retirement in that agency.
For states that do have a maximum age limit, the age at which you can start your law enforcement career, It is generally around 34-37 years of age.
Exceptions are made for military veterans. In the New York Police Department, for example, the maximum age to sit the initial exam is 35. If you have had active military service, you can deduct six years from that age or in other words you can apply for the job at the age of 41.

Cautions Convictions Financial Position And Vetting
Ideally, you shouldnt have a criminal conviction or cautions record. If you do have one, acceptance will depend on the age and nature of the offence. We are unable to state whether your convictions record will affect your application before you apply. This will be determined from the full and confidential information provided during the recruitment and selection process.
If you dont tell us about any cautions, investigations or criminal convictions that may be linked to you at an early stage, your application could be refused simply because you werent being open and honest. There are a number of factors to consider here so there is not a blanket answer to this. Our best guidance is to speak to the force you wish to apply to, to get their advice. The more you can be open and honest about any history you might have, the better and more accurate the advice from the force will be.
What Is The Maximum Age You Can Become An Officer
As a guideline, we will use the requirements of the New York State Police to give you a rough idea of age specifications. For them specifically, you have to be less than 30 when you submit your application. Once submitted, you must be less than 36 when you are officially appointed. The make exceptions for those who have served in the military, allowing an extra 6 years to apply. For military vets, they may be up to 42 years old when they actually become a cop.
Federal government police have similar requirements. They allow you to be appointed up to the age of 37. Just like the NYSP, they give exceptions to any military vets and also special arrangements for anyone already employed by the federal government.
That all being said, this does not apply everywhere. In fact, you are quite likely to find a police force that is not so strict to these guidelines.

What Is The Minimum Maximum Age Requirement To Become A Police Officer
Each state sets their own requirements on what the minimum age will be for becoming a police officer and if there will be a maximum age and if so what that will be. Individual agencies may then set their own policies for minimum and maximum age requirements which fall within the limits of the state requirements but may be more restrictive.
The minimum age requirement could be anywhere between 18-21 years of age. Some departments will have a minimum age requirement for applying such as 20, with the requirement that you be 21 when you are sworn in.
The maximum age requirement applies to those applying for new positions with that agency. Often, the maximum age requirement is based upon the amount of time it would take to retire with full benefits and still retire on time. Say for example the mandatory retirement age is 57 for a department, so for a police officer to retire with 20 years a new officer must start with that department by age 37. Therefore, the maximum age requirement is 37 years old.
Some departments do not have maximum age requirements. Generally the minimum and maximum age requirements are posted on the vacancy announcement. Some exceptions to maximum age requirements are available for those with military service. This exception applies to certain federal law enforcement positions.

Individuals who have reserve responsibilities are not prevented from applying to join us. However, once serving, there are a number of posts where it has not been deemed appropriate to have reserve responsibilities due to the nature of the role. These include the Special Escort Group, Operational Support Unit, Tactical Firearms Unit and Nuclear Guard Force. Officers in the Force who have reserve responsibilities are therefore not eligible to apply for posts within these specialisms.

Find Out If You Meet The Requirements
The state holds a civil service exam every two years to become an officer. Contact civil service directly regarding the exam schedule, availability, and registration.
To become a police officer, you need to first take a written test. You also need to meet these requirements:
- You must have a valid Massachusetts Drivers license.
- You must be at least 19 years of age and no more than 39 years of age on the date of the examination. *
- You need to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate. You can also satisfy this requirement with three years of military service and an honorable discharge.
- You must be a Boston resident at least one year before the date of your exam.
* You can take the written exam when you turn 19, but you wont be considered for a position until you turn 21.
Are you a veteran recognized by Civil Service, either on active duty or released from the military? You can add your service time to your age, up to four years, and still be eligible for appointment as an officer.

Failure to declare information may result in automatic cancellation of your application.

This will allow you to find out whether your prior history is likely to disqualify you from being considered for the role.

The Power Of Life Experience

Throughout the majority of the US you must be between 19 and 21 to become certified as a police officer. Qualifying As An Older Rookie
Assuming the department you want to join doesn’t set a maximum age to become a police officer, that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a job. You’ll still have to meet the other standards the department sets.
- Physical fitness. If you aren’t fit enough, you won’t be hired. A PD open to older cops may not set the same standards for a 50-something as a 20-something. In Florida, for instance, a 21-year-old has to manage 40 sit-ups and 33 pushups in the fitness test, according to Tactical Functional Training. At 50, it’s 26 and 15.
- Vision and hearing. UCLA says, for example, that its law enforcement officers must have 20/100 vision, correctable to 20/30, functional color vision and hearing loss no greater than 25 decibels at 500 to 2,500 Hertz.
- Education. The New York state police require, for example, high school graduation or a GED, plus at least 60 hours of college credits. Life experience or military training may substitute for some of the college courses.
- Passing a background check. If you’ve lived 50 years without serious trouble, that’s good news. If you’ve acquired a felony conviction or a drug habit along the way, you may be red-flagged when you apply.

Each police department has its own requirements for the minimum and maximum age of new recruits, so police officer age requirements by state vary, as they do in different cities. For example, the Philadelphia Police Department and the San Diego Police Department do not have maximum age limits for new hires. However, the Fort Worth Police Department wont allow a recruit to take the civil service exam a necessary step in the police hiring process as of his 45th birthday. In Rhode Island, the age limit on police academy training is 35. Meanwhile, the New York City Police Department will allow a candidate over 35 with active military service to add up to six years to his age — taking the maximum to 41.
