Dallas Police Department Information

The Dallas Police Department has over 120 years of history serving the Dallas community. The DPD is organized into seven squad divisions. Each of those divisions contains five sectors, with 35 total sectors. There are eight patrol divisions serving the 385.8 square miles within city limits.2 Specialized divisions to which qualified patrol officers can apply for transfer include criminal investigations, auto theft, criminal intelligence unit, computer crime squad, and the mounted unit.

Hiring and retention is a current challenge for the Dallas Police Department. According to recent reports, the department has lost hundreds of officers during recent years the department is evaluating whether these departures are tied to command structure and use of resources.3 The departments lack of long-term strategy may also play a role in the losses, as a number of external evaluators have recommended that the department look into developing a solid long-term strategy addressing recruiting and other pressing issues, including seeking outside accreditation and re-evaluating the departments organization.3

Members of the department who are captains and below are protected by the city’s civil service system with promotion based on the results of competitive examinations. Senior corporals typically are officers who serve either as field training officers in the Patrol Division or who serve as detectives in one of the department’s investigative units. The rank of captain has not been in use since 1992, however, those who were captains were allowed to keep it as well as those who were demoted from any chief position, as chiefs once demoted must retain their last civil service rank. There is currently only one captain remaining as of 2018. Majors, deputy chiefs and assistant chiefs are appointed by the chief of police without examination and do not hold civil service protection for these ranks. Division commander and bureau commander are non-civil-service titles based on assignments. Members may hold both assignment titles and civil service or appointive ranks. On October 4, 2012, Chief David Brown created a new major rank in between captain and deputy chief.

  • Hostage situations
  • Apprehension of armed and barricaded suspects
  • Suicide intervention
  • Crowd and riot control
  • Fugitive tracking in rural environments

While all SWAT officers are expert marksmen with in-depth training in close combat, most play a specialized role within the team. Some serve as negotiators or medics while others are experts in handling assault vehicles or weapons. Each team includes several tactical officers who coordinate and carry out assaults on barricaded positions and apprehend armed suspects.

Many officers spend a majority of their time in conventional policing activities such as patrol and traffic enforcement. In some areas, they use their specialized tactical knowledge to conduct crime suppression exercises that ferret out dangerous offenders.

Most SWAT officers consider serving on the team an honor and privilege. Members are chosen from the ranks of experienced police officers based on their superior fitness, marksmanship and service record. They take great pride in protecting the public and their fellow law enforcement officers in life-and-death situations that put their years of training and experience to the test.

Great place to work if you want to maximize your skills and gain experience in many areas of law enforcement. You are given a platform to grow , develop, and achieve whatever you put your mind to.

They get you trained, certified and have some of the most dedicated tough trainers I’ve ever encountered. I felt as prepared as I could be after being released from training with enough resources to help me should I need it. It does get busy and stress/tension can be quite high sometimes, but as long as you love what you do and keep up with yourself, you’ll survive.

Dallas is a great place to gain an immense amount of experience in a short amount of time. If youre the type of person who likes staying busy, this is the place for you.

When I was hired on we were told we had a 3000 dollar incentive.to finish training and OJT, That was a lie. We were told we would be allowed to.complete TCOLE, that was a lie. We were told we would be allowed 7 weeks of trsining and the support and acces to the resources we need, that too was and is a lie. You can not get parking, uniforms, the promised incentive, or even you permanent TCOLE license here. On top of the super long hiring process and the constant backstabing and general.negative atmosphere this place is going downhill quick.
