New Michigan State Police Troopers Graduate From Abbreviated Academy

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Police officially welcomed 19 new troopers after the department’s first academy geared specifically for licensed police officers.

This class was the first of its kind for the Michigan State Police, created specifically to attract licensed police officers as law enforcement agencies across the country struggle to attract qualified candidates,” said Col. Joe Gasper, director of the Michigan State Police.

The Bay Region, which encompasses much of Mid-Michigan, will receive three new troopers at the Caro, Flint and West Branch posts.

The 141st Michigan State Police Trooper Recruit School was the first to welcome all applicants who already have experience as police officers. They started on March 20 and completed a shorter academy because they already were licensed police officers.

They all received training in patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, decision making, leadership, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing, firearms, water safety, defensive tactics and precision driving.

Public service is a calling that comes with great responsibility,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. “I recognize and appreciate the sacrifices our law enforcement officers make every day to keep us all safe in our homes and neighborhoods.’

Michigan State Police currently have about 1,200 troopers assigned to posts across the state and a total of 1,900 enlisted members after Friday’s graduation.

Detroit is tired of being used as a freebie training ground for other police departments.

For years, city officials have complained Detroits police shortage is exacerbated by an exodus of recruits who receive free training through the citys police academy only to leave for a suburban force upon graduation.

Now, a bill in Lansing would allow cities throughout Michigan to claw back training money about $18,000 in wages from recruits who leave within five years.

The poaching is so bad police from other departments have shown up at Detroits police academy graduation to recruit officers, said Detroit Police Commissioner Willie Bell.

I have heard most of my career that suburban tell people, If you can get certified in Detroit, we have an opening, said Bell, who retired as a lieutenant after 32 years.

Its very frustrating to train and certify an officer and they leave in a short period of time, even a five-year window. It has a tremendous impact on your manpower.

The bill comes as crime is declining in Detroit, but it remains one of the most violent if not the most-violent cities in the nation. The number of officers in Detroit has fallen from 2,500 five years ago to about 1,700, according to FBI statistics and the Detroit Police Officers Association union.

Nearly half of the citys officers, about 800, have less the five years experience, according to the police union. And the current contingent of cops is 120 short of the citys budget.

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Police is expanding its program to help teens and young adults figure out what they want to do after graduating high school.

The state polices youth explorer program is now reaching nine other MSP posts across the state.

We want kids to know a public service career is possible and its pretty awesome, said Sgt. Ashley Kierpaul with the Michigan State Police Recruiting and Selection Section. What they think policing is can be much different than what they actually experience in our Explorer Program.

The program was made to showcase how rewarding working in law enforcement can be, MSP said.

The MSP Explorer Program allows those between 14 and 21-years-old to experience what its like to be a police officer through training and mentoring by MSP troopers.

When they reach 18-years-old, theres an opportunity for them to apply for a paid position as a cadet.

While the program does allow some flexibility, participants must maintain a 70 percent attendance rate. Classes are held at MSP posts once a week where participants learn more about law enforcement and scenario-based exercises like traffic stops.

To be accepted into the Explorer Program, applicants must:

• Have good academic standing
• Have no felony convictions
• Have excellent moral character

Michigan State Police busy training next generation of officers

INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan State Police training is as much a physical location as a state of mind for the recruits gunning to be part of the state’s law enforcement agency. The mantra emblazoned on a sign at the facility says as much.

“If you think you canyou will. If you think you can’t you’re right.”

It’s where “a trooper is built” said Capt. James Grady.

Grady heads the training division where he overseas the rigorous exercise regiment that all recruits must complete to adorn the MSP blue. Not everyone who starts the training completes it, but as recruit Arongundade can attest to it: it’s worth it.

“It’s been challenging physically and mentally, emotionally,” he said.

The training is a 20-week program that takes place at MSP’s facility in Lansing. Down from 80, only 59 recruits were still by week 15 when FOX 2 got a glimpse of some of the work awaiting new recruits.

“We cover implicit bias, deescalation training, we do a lot of patrols training, a lot of reality-based scenario training,” said Grady.

Recruits also build upon their regiment with a strict schedule that helps cement both the need for routine and the necessity for attention to detail. Even stray fibers of lint can get you in trouble.
