Its not recommended to ask any direct questions at this point.
Instead, you should use this time to form a closing statement that reviews your strongest points and why you would be a good fit for the agency.
If you havent already, this is a great chance to show that youve done some research into the department and have a good understanding of the challenges they face in the future. Its also an opportunity to insert yourself into that future, and make it known that you could play an active and valuable role for the department.
Answers to avoid: Since this is your last chance to leave a good impression on the oral board, it’s not the time to come off as presumptuous. Asking questions like, when do I start, how much do I get paid, or when the holidays are will ruin any goodwill that you’ve built up during the interview. End with a strong closing statement, shake the hands of your interviewers, and leave the room with confidence.

What does it take to become a police officer? Mental and physical strength and agility, patience for a lengthy application process, graduation from a police academy — and a relatively clean police record.

Advance Through The Ranks
From police officer, you can get promoted to higher ranks, starting with sergeant. You can qualify for sergeant positions after gaining five to 10 years of experience. Sergeants are low-level supervisors who oversee the officers and functions on a police squad.
After another year or two, you might get promoted to a middle-ranking position such as lieutenant, who manages several sergeants. After nine to 20 years in the police force, you can apply to a police captain position.

Minimum Qualifications For Police Chief Employment
Becoming a police chief is often the next logical step for veteran command officers who show leadership and management abilities. A bachelor’s degree and a proven record of administrative, investigative and supervisory experience are the minimum requirements needed to get a selection committee’s attention. Prospective chiefs must pay special attention to the demographic makeup and size of the police agencies they wish to lead, too. Selection committees closely study a candidate’s experience to ensure a good match with their communities.
What Does A Captain Do
There are certain skills that many captains have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. By taking a look through resumes, we were able to narrow down the most common skills for a person in this position. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed customer-service skills, hand-eye coordination and hearing ability.

Police Officer/patrol Officer/police Detective
This rank is the most well-known and broadest of the bunch. While police officers, patrol officers and police detectives may have differing job descriptions depending on who employs them, these law enforcement officers often respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, patrol assigned areas, obtain warrants, arrest suspects, and testify in court, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics .1
Most officers and detectives need to complete a training academy in their area. Education requirements beyond that range from a high school diploma to a Bachelors degreeall depending on the employer, the specific job and the local regulations.1
It should also be noted that a detectives place in the hierarchy of officers isnt always as clear cut as this list. In most departments, a detectives have several years of experience and may informally outrank patrol officers in certain situationslike when working on a specific case theyre assigned to.
Nineteenth Century Draws To A Close
In the 1880s, the churches replaced the taverns as the centre of the social scene in Richmond Hill. An August 1881 edition of The Liberalremarked “Few villages of equal size or importance within the Province, have manifested so much activity and energy in church enterprise as our own.” Richmond Hill in 1881 had a large Presbyterian church, adjacent to St Mary’s Anglican Church. Across Yonge Street stood a Methodist church and a smaller Roman Catholic church was also found in Richmond Hill. An investigation by The Liberal found that over $25 000 had been spent on church projects in 1880 while Richmond Hill’s population stood at less than one thousand souls.
The 1880s and 1890s were economically bad for Richmond Hill. The Patterson brothers firm, a manufacturing of farming implements and a major employer in Richmond Hill moved their operation to Woodstock after the town council there offered a $35 000 bonus if they would, which allowed their growing operation to construct a much needed rail spur. The Patterson brothers factory moved to Stratford in the winter of 1886/1887. The community experienced the economic decline that was occurring all across Ontario at the time, although perhaps not as strongly. The Trench Carriage Works and Newton Tanning Company remained major employers. The population declined, from 850 in 1890 to 650 in 1900. But many of the main stores along Yonge Street stayed open.

Skills Needed To Be An Effective Supervisor/sergeant
There are many skills required of effective police sergeants, both at an interpersonal level and in terms of tactical skills. Like any good supervisor, a police sergeant should be versatile, adaptable and patient. In many instances, a sergeant deals with situations that are uncommon and challenging, and these traits will be critical. Such instances might include personality issues with officers, work ethic issues, conflict among officers and community relations issues in which emotions run especially high.
Sgt. Fors believes an effective sergeant should possess the following five qualities:
A sergeant also needs to be a good negotiator and mediator. In many instances, a sergeant not only has to implement the administrative goals of a department, but must also protect and defend patrol officers from politics and unreasonable requests for duty, said Sgt. Fors. This can and will be challenging.
Sgt. Fors, in his two decades on the force, has seen his many patrol officers advance through their departments and move into leadership roles. In his own experience as both an officer and a mentor, he has given and received his fair share of valuable advice for aspiring police sergeants:

Winning Strategies For Police Promotional Exams
Your resume should demonstrate a wide range of progressive police experience with emphasis on command level assignments along with increasingly high level work experience in the planning, budgeting, community oriented policing and staffing areas. Top candidates will have attended the F.B.I. Leadership Academy and remained active in that organization.
If you are vying for the chiefs position in your own department, you will have an advantage over outside candidates unless a change agent is desirable due to a perceived leadership, corruption or severe morale issues. This is with the caveat that you have the outgoing chiefs blessing and that of local politicians.
It has been my experience with internal candidates that:
A.) the testing process is bypassed and a new Chief is promoted almost immediately, or
B.) there is a nationwide search and then the candidate from inside the department is selected.
Once in awhile a person from another department is selected to be the next chief of police, but statistically across the fruited plain, someone from inside of the department is chosen to lead the agency.

Miles’ Hill: The Nineteenth Century Dawns
At the start of the 19th century, English speaking and German-speaking settlers were trickling into the areas of Vaughan township and Markham township that would later become Richmond Hill. By 1801 the area was known as Miles’ Hill after Abner Miles and his son James Miles, who were prominent settlers. Miles had arrived in the area in 1800 from York, Upper Canada where he had run a general store on King Street. He opened a general store on Lot 45 on the east side of Yonge Street, and started a potash plant on Lot 45 on the west side of Yonge Street. That same year, he was elected tax assessor and tax collector for the townships of Vaughan, Markham, King and Whitchurch. He soon opened a tavern on the south-east corner of Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive. After Abner Miles’ death in 1806, his son James took over his father’s businesses and role in the community. James Miles fit well into the role of a community leader. He was a local magistrate and justice of the peace. He was also a lieutenant in the York Militia during the War of 1812.
During the War of 1812, General Isaac Brock ordered all available men in Miles’ Hill to form a company. The men assembled at the farm of United Empire Loyalist James Fulton, and Brock came to personally inspect them. They were formed into a company of the 1st Regiment of York Militia. The company spent the fall and winter of 1812/1813 in York, Upper Canada waiting for an attack, but it never came.
