In order to apply to be an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper, candidates must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Be 21 years or older
  • Be able to accept an assignment in any part of the state, not necessarily the candidates home county
  • Pass the agencys multiple-choice written exam candidates are placed in the competitive application pool according to their exam scores
  • Not have any disqualifying criminal convictions
  • Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military

In order to be selected for Alabama trooper training, candidates must:

  • Have passed the Basic Ability Test for Law Enforcement Officers or hold an associates degree or higher
  • Pass a physical agility test
  • Pass a vision screening
  • Undergo a full background check that will include a polygraph and testing for illegal drugs
  • Pass a medical evaluation

Selected candidates will become trooper trainees. After training and a six-month probationary period, trainees will be eligible for promotion to ALEA troopers.

    • Rule 650-X-2.01 stipulates that in order to be qualified for the academy, a candidate must be employed full time as a peace officer by a law enforcement agency.
    • If the candidate is working less than full time, they should request a waiver from the commission to allow them to attend the academy.

    2021 CERTIFICATION TRAINING CURRICULUM:

    The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has adopted a revised training curriculum for the Basic certification training program. The 2021 basic academy curriculum is now 560 hours and is scheduled to be taught over a 14-week period.

    The 2021 curriculum for the Lateral/Refresher program has been expanded from 95 hours to 120 hours and will be taught over a three-week period.

    The 2021 academy training schedules have been adjusted to reflect the required curriculum. There is no increase in academy tuition for 2021.

    PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS:

    The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has amended the Alabama Administrative Code , RULE 650-X-2-.04 PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS, to require all academy applicants, both basic and lateral/refresher applicants, to submit to a psychological evaluation conducted by a Licensed Behavioral Health Professional. This requirement is effective with all applications submitted to the Commission on or after January 1, 2021. The Commission adopted APOST Form Number 3B, Psychological Evaluation, which is required to be submitted with each application.     Effective immediately, in an effort to prevent the introduction of COVID-19 into academy training facilities and minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for academy class members and staff, the following procedures are implemented.

    COVID-19 Testing Required: All students enrolled in an academy session are required to be tested for COVID-19 prior to reporting to the academy for the beginning of training. The protocol for this testing/reporting procedure is as follows:

  • The employing agency shall have the applicant tested for COVID-19 within fourteen days of the academy start date.
  • The report of a negative COVID-19 test shall be submitted by the employing agency to the academy not less than five days before the session start date.
