Acquire A Degree Or Academy Training
The requirements for this step will vary substantially depending on the state in which you plan on becoming a police officer. Some states do not require their officers to be college-educated, even if they may prefer it. Other states, like Minnesota, an Associates degree or equivalent training is one of the requirements to become a police officer.
Generally speaking, the training process for aspiring police officers follows two routes:
- Completing training by earning a two- or four-year degree in Criminal Justice or similar field from a Peace Officer Standings and Training -certified college or university, or
- Completing training through a government-approved police academy or training program.
Since police officer requirements differ, youll want to be sure to check with the agency that sets the standards for law enforcement training and licensure in your area. Some also have arrangements for military reciprocity, allowing candidates who served in the military to follow a different process in acknowledgement of the training they already have.
Whichever path you take, your training will include classroom instruction in state and local laws, covering topics like constitutional law, civil rights and police ethics. Recruits also receive training and supervised experience in areas such as patrol, traffic control, firearm use, self-defense, first aid and emergency response.
Alabama State Trooper Requirements

In order to apply to be an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper, candidates must:
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Be 21 years or older
- Be able to accept an assignment in any part of the state, not necessarily the candidates home county
- Pass the agencys multiple-choice written exam candidates are placed in the competitive application pool according to their exam scores
- Not have any disqualifying criminal convictions
- Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military
In order to be selected for Alabama trooper training, candidates must:
- Have passed the Basic Ability Test for Law Enforcement Officers or hold an associates degree or higher
- Pass a physical agility test
- Pass a vision screening
- Undergo a full background check that will include a polygraph and testing for illegal drugs
- Pass a medical evaluation
Selected candidates will become trooper trainees. After training and a six-month probationary period, trainees will be eligible for promotion to ALEA troopers.

Top College Programs In Alabama For Law Enforcement
Talladega College graduated 24 students majoring in the Legal and Law degree program in a recent year. Each student was equipped with the knowledge they needed to accept an entry-level position in a law enforcement office.
Alabama A& M University, located in Normal, Alabama, has a small student body of around 6,200. The university educated and graduated 82 criminal justice students who earned their bachelors degrees in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement in a recent year, a program housed within the Legal and Law Department.
Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama has a student body of just over 3,000. This smaller university is a private, not-for-profit institution affiliated with the Church of Christ. As small as the university is, it graduated 257 Legal and Law graduates in a recent year 2 students earned associate degrees, 78 earned their bachelors in Criminal Justice, 112 earned their masters in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement, and 57 receiving their Juris Doctorate in Law.

Some Requirements To Become A Police Officer In Alabama
- Rule 650-X-2.01 stipulates that in order to be qualified for the academy, a candidate must be employed full time as a peace officer by a law enforcement agency.
- If the candidate is working less than full time, they should request a waiver from the commission to allow them to attend the academy.
- Applicants must be no less than 19 years old.
- Should be an American citizen.
- At least have a high school diploma or GED.

2021 CERTIFICATION TRAINING CURRICULUM:
The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has adopted a revised training curriculum for the Basic certification training program. The 2021 basic academy curriculum is now 560 hours and is scheduled to be taught over a 14-week period.
The 2021 curriculum for the Lateral/Refresher program has been expanded from 95 hours to 120 hours and will be taught over a three-week period.
The 2021 academy training schedules have been adjusted to reflect the required curriculum. There is no increase in academy tuition for 2021.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS:
The Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission has amended the Alabama Administrative Code , RULE 650-X-2-.04 PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS, to require all academy applicants, both basic and lateral/refresher applicants, to submit to a psychological evaluation conducted by a Licensed Behavioral Health Professional. This requirement is effective with all applications submitted to the Commission on or after January 1, 2021. The Commission adopted APOST Form Number 3B, Psychological Evaluation, which is required to be submitted with each application. Required Minimum Qualifications For Applicants
- United States citizen
- Minimum of 21 years of age
- High school degree or equivalent
- Valid U.S. drivers license with an acceptable motor vehicle report
- Successfully passing the Police Officer Recruitment online examination, interview panel and comprehensive background check as well as the physical agility and physical ability examinations for law enforcement officers. The PT Assessment consists of the following exams:
- Physical Agility Includes running the course and completing the following requirements within 90 seconds: push a vehicle on a level surface climb a six-foot wall climb through a window-like metal structure walk a balance beam drag a 165 lb. dummy.
- Physical Ability Includes completing 22 push-ups within one minute, 25 sit-ups within one minute and completing a 1.5 mile run within 15 minutes and 28 seconds.

Before going through the academy, they must be employed full time as a cop, meaning they have to work an average of 40 hours per week and within 6 months of being employed they need to complete the academy training in order to be certified. Failing to do so will nullify their employment and they will have to wait two years before submitting another application.
