Attend A Police Academy
Most police hiring programs will include a police academy component for prospective officers who have passed the previous hiring steps. Most law enforcement departments have their own academy, which recruits are required to attend for a period of 12 to 24 weeks before going out into the field. Recruits will usually draw a salary during this period. Academy courses may cover topics such as criminal law, community policing, firearms training, and investigation and defensive tactics.

Louisiana Sheriff Deputy Requirements
Unlike most states, Louisiana is divided into parishes rather than counties. However, similar to other states, each parish has its own sheriffs office. Prospective deputies must meet the standards of the sheriffs office to which they are applying. Once given an offer of employment the future deputy must pass a training course at one of the states POST-approved academies.
Law Enforcement Salary And Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, police officers in the US earn an average salary of over $63,000 per year.5 The outlook for police and sheriffs patrol officers is also positive, with an overall 7% increase in job openings expected through the year 2026, which is about the same as the average for all occupations.6 This equates to about 4,700 new police jobs added to the workforce every year including replacement positions, however, an average of 49,500 annual openings are expected each year.6 So while the projected growth of new positions is around average at 7%, the real opportunity is in replacement hiring, where nearly 50,000 jobs are expected to be available every year during that same 10-year period.6 Sue Rahr, retired King County Sheriff, agrees: There was massive police hiring done in the late 70s and early 80s. Were all getting ready to retire. I think this is the best time to become a copright now.

New Orleans Police Officer Requirements
The New Orleans Police Department seeks highly-qualified men and women to join its ranks. To become an NOPD law enforcement officer, candidates must:
- Be 20 years of age
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Have been honorably discharged from the military, if a veteran
- Not have used marijuana within the past two years and not have used any other illegal drug within the past 10 years
- Have no felony convictions, misdemeanors involving sexual offenses, nor any offenses involving the violation of civil rights
- Possess a valid drivers license with a satisfactory driving record
The NOPD hiring process begins with submitting an online application followed by walk-in testing that is conducted at 9:30 AM each weekday morning in the Civil Service Department. All candidates must take physical agility, multiple-choice, and writing skills tests. Hopeful cops who pass the initial exams will be invited to a panel interview, which for successful candidates will be followed by a urinalysis, background investigation, and medical and psychological exams. Top-performing candidates will be invited to attend an upcoming police academy class as NOPD recruits.

New Orleans Police Training Academy
NOPD recruits attend the New Orleans Police Training Academy for 26 weeks comprising over 886 clock hours of training.3 The police academy facilities were significantly renovated in 2017 and include 24,000 square feet of training spaces. Training topics covered in the police academy include firearms, investigations, law, patrol activities, and the use of force. Police academy graduates typically undergo further field training with an experienced officer before being assigned to solo patrol.
