Toledo Welcomes 22 New Police Officers Arson Investigator

“You’ve been in training during some of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history…. Yet you are still here…. I cannot tell you how proud I am of all of you,” he said, noting that 61 law-enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty since the new officers started their training in October, including Toledo police Officer Brandon Stalker, who was killed Jan. 18.

The 67th Toledo Police Academy graduation ceremony was at Owens Community College’s center for fine and performing arts in Perrysburg Township. About 150 people attended the 60-minute event during which Toledo Fire Chief Brian Byrd also presented an arson investigator’s badge to Kathryn Brown, a Toledo firefighter who will be assigned to the police and fire departments’ combined fire investigation unit.

Officer Guadalupe Victoria of the graduating class, a 34-year-old Army veteran and a mother of three, said she was happy to be graduating from the training, which was “difficult every step of the way.”

The fact that her children weren’t at school because of the pandemic made it even harder for her, she said.

But her commitment to become a police officer did not waiver, because it was a longtime dream, she said.

Officer Spencer Hastedt, 28, a former Defiance police officer, said he, too, never doubted his commitment, though he “knew a couple cadets who did.”

With the 22 new graduates, the Toledo sworn police force increases from 583 to 605.

Ohio Police Officer Killed In Armed Standoff With Man

Police say an Ohio police officer has been shot and killed in an armed standoff

TOLEDO, Ohio — An Ohio police officer was shot and killed after an hourslong armed standoff that resulted in gunfire Monday, police said.

Toledo Police Officer Brandon Stalker, 24, died after the shooting that sent both him and the suspect to the hospital, Police Chief George Kral said at a Monday night news conference.

Negotiators had tried for hours to get the suspect to surrender peacefully.

Stalker leaves behind a fiancée and a child. He had joined the police department in July 2018.

Very sad day for the city of Toledo and specifically the Toledo police department, Kral said. “He was an amazing police officer.

The suspect’s condition wasn’t disclosed.

Kral said the standoff started at about 4 p.m. when officers noticed a man with warrants out for his arrest in connection to cathedral vandalism smoking outside a home in a residential neighborhood.

Officers approached the man, who fled brandishing a firearm and entered a nearby home. Police set up a barrier around the home and a SWAT team was called in, Kral said.

After hours of unsuccessful negotiation, police used tear gas to force him out. He then exited holding two guns, firing. Police shot back, striking the subject. One of the suspect’s shots hit Stalker, Kral said.

This has been a very difficult time, Kapszukiewicz said. It is a very difficult day for the city.”

Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.

Toledo Police Start 2021 With Staffing Deficit

TOLEDO, Ohio The Toledo Police Department will start 2021 with a staffing deficit.

The department averages 18 to 20 retirements each year, but in 2020, they’ve had 31 retirements, with four, if not more, expected in early January.

A huge recruiting effort is underway, but it’s been difficult to draw people in.

RELATED: Toledo Police launch recruiting campaign

A spokesperson for the department reported officers are retiring early due to numerous different reasons coupled with the coronavirus pandemic. Officers are exposed and quarantined daily and now that they’re not included in the first round of first responders receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, the department is expecting more exposures.

There are currently 602 sworn officers working and they’ll soon have 627 officers counting the 25 cadets in their academy.

But it’s not enough to make up for the deficit.

For a city of Toledo’s size and crime rate, Chief George Kral has said he would like to see up to 720 officers on the force, but recruiting hasn’t been easy.

“Law enforcement is front and center in the global stage and that coupled with the realization that you won’t come home to your family at night. I think Officer Dia’s death made that clear to a lot of people,” said Lt. Kellie Lenhardt, a spokesperson with the police department.

Budgetary constraints and the coronavirus pandemic haven’t made it easier either but the department has made a huge recruiting push.

Toledo Police Recruiting For New 31

Team coverage: Preparations in place for Toledo Police ...

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Police Department is kicking off a campaign to recruit some new faces. Department officials say they need about 31 new officers for a new class that starts next summer.

Officer McLendon, part of the recruitment team, says the key to being a success with TPD centers around building relationships.

For me, I think a good, qualified candidate would be someone who has a good community background that loves dealing with the community,” McLendon said.

McLendon says one of the benefits about TPD is that training is done in-house.

One of the coolest things about the Toledo Police Department is that we have our own Police Academy. so you dont need any experience. Thats one of the nice things about this, you dont have to have a degree in criminal justice necessarily,” says McLendon.

The class for these recruits starts up in August of 2021. This is in addition to the academy class that starts in October.

Its usually about a seven-month academy thats paid. Once youre done, youll work about four months on the street with a field training officer going over about 17 or 18 different skills,” says Officer Bates, who is also on the recruitment team.

Police are encouraging everyone to apply as long as they are at least 20 years old. They say they are also looking for places to hold testing to make the process accessible for the whole community.
