How To Become A Reserve Officer
If youâre interested in becoming a reserve officer, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. Weâve determined that 62.1% of reserve officers have a bachelorâs degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 9.8% of reserve officers have masterâs degrees. Even though most reserve officers have a college degree, itâs possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.
Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a reserve officer. When we researched the most common majors for a reserve officer, we found that they most commonly earn bachelorâs degree degrees or associate degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on reserve officer resumes include masterâs degree degrees or high school diploma degrees.
You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a reserve officer. In fact, many reserve officer jobs require experience in a role such as security officer. Meanwhile, many reserve officers also have previous career experience in roles such as volunteer or police officer.

Potential Disqualifiers For A Policing Career In Canada
When preparing yourself for a policing career, you need to be aware of what will disqualify you from the police application process. As far as the written, physical, and medical exams, the requirements are fairly consistent across all agencies.
Language Disqualifier: You need to be fluent in either English or French including being able to speak, read, and understand one of these languages.
Physical Disqualifier: You cannot be in poor physical condition. Failure to successfully complete the physical examination in the minimum time frame is an automatic disqualification.
Test particulars can vary from one police agency to the next. However, all tests simulate critical incidents that police officers are exposed to. For example. the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation , used by the RCMP, consists of three sections:
Psychological Disqualifiers: A candidate can be disqualified if they do not meet the minimum psychological examination requirements.

These officers supplement the full-time officers in a variety of duties throughout the Department. They patrol in vehicles, on foot patrols, or on bicycle patrol. Most Reserve Officers work with officers, but others can qualify to patrol on their own. This program is ideal for individuals who have an established career and do not wish to make a full transition to full-time Police Officer. Reserve Officers can enjoy the best of both worlds, maintain their chosen career while helping to police an internationally known city.

These training sessions are available to those that have been recently appointed by a law enforcement agency as a Reserve Officer.

Contact your local Sheriff’s Office or Police Department and ask for their Reserve Coordinator. All recruits must be associated with a sponsoring agency. WSCJTC does not schedule Reserve Officer Academies.
About Beaverton Police Department Reserve Unit
The Beaverton Police Department Reserve Unit is a team of volunteer officers who donate their time to the city and the community in a variety of roles to assist the police department. The Reserve Unit consists of a maximum of 20 members. They receive their initial training by attending an internal reserve academy for a 4 month period. This academy is taught using the expertise of members of the Beaverton Police Department in a wide variety of areas.
Once they graduate from the reserve academy, reserve officers receive ongoing training by attending all regular department mandated training, as well as reserve officer specific classes taught twice a month.
Reserve Officers work with full-time regular officers in two-person cars. By facilitating responses to calls for service, and transporting prisoners during busy periods, full-time officers are free to provide other services and activities needed in the community. During this time spent with the full-time regular officers, the reserves are trained by the regular officers utilizing a modification of the Field Training and Evaluation Program, which is the same program used to train the Departmentâs full-time officers.
Reserve Unit members also assist with community events such as National Night Out, community parades, and more. In addition, they provide their services year-round by patrolling at high school sporting events, shopping malls during the holiday season, and the Farmers Market.

Reserve Constables / Community Safety Officers
Some larger urban police forces have an additional class of officers who may be called Reserve Constables, Community Safety Officers, Auxiliary Officers. These officers may have reduced training/education requirements depending on their police force. They usually work as a volunteer, often assisting at community events, crime prevention programs, or traffic safety for their police force. They may be classed as Auxiliary Constables or Special Municipal Constable. For more details on qualifications and requirements, check with individual police forces in your area.

Minimum Qualifications For Reservists
In order to be considered for a Reservist position with the Division of Law Enforcement, you must:
- Be at least 19 years old.
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Possess a valid class E Florida driver license and have an overall good driving record.
- Have not been convicted of any felony or any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.
- Have not been dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Have good moral character as determined by a comprehensive background investigation.
- Have already completed Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Standards training for Law Enforcement Auxiliary Officers per section 11B-35, Florida Administrative Code, or have current Florida Law Enforcement Officer certification
- Pass a thorough background investigation conducted by an agency investigator
- Pass an oral interview
In addition, each applicant will be fingerprinted as part of the criminal history check and the fingerprints will be sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for comparison.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Section 83 of the Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act, 2019, stipulates a person appointed as a police officer must:

Municipal Police Force Salaries & Benefits
In comparison to the federal police force, the municipal police agencies offer slightly higher salaries.
The Calgary Police Service offers a starting salary of approximately $66,000/year.
The Vancouver Police Department offers new hires $70,154/year with an incremental increase to $90,198 after 3 years. Benefits include paid vacation, medical and dental benefits and a BC Municipal Pension Plan membership.
The Toronto Police Service has a starting salary of $63,564.98 for their cadets. After year 3, police officers receive an annual salary of $90,836. Benefits include paid vacation, family medical and dental benefits, life insurance, pension plan, parental/maternity leave and more.
Considering that the median income for individual Canadians was $36,400 in 2018, according to Statistics Canada, the starting salary for a Canadian police officer is an attractive one.
When deciding between the federal or municipal level, keep in mind that while the RCMP might have a lower salary, the role involves police duties at the international, federal, provincial and municipal levels with a much wider variety in operational and administrative opportunities.Some specializations that are unique to the RCMP are: Integrated Border Enforcement Team, National Security, Marine Services, International Peace Operations and many, many more.

What Do You Need To Become A Police Constable In Toronto
Officer candidates follow a detailed application and training process to become police constables with TPS. Once hired, new recruits attend the Ontario Police College for Basic Constable Training. You need to meet the following minimum requirements to become a Police Constable in Toronto:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada,
- Be at least 18 years of age,
- Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to your own safety and the safety of members of the public,
- Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent. . Where education has been completed outside Ontario, official proof of equivalency must be obtained,
- Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity.
