If you’re interested in becoming a special police, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We’ve determined that 27.0% of special polices have a bachelor’s degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 3.5% of special polices have master’s degrees. Even though some special polices have a college degree, it’s possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.
Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a special police. When we researched the most common majors for a special police, we found that they most commonly earn high school diploma degrees or bachelor’s degree degrees. The 2020 Maryland Legislature passed HB1111, which revised the Public Safety Article sections 3-303 and 3-312. HB1111 added mandated training requirements for both initial and renewal Special Police Officer Commission .
Except for those individuals who are currently certified, or previously certified within the last 5 years, police officers by the Police Training and Standards Commission individuals applying for the initial Special Police Officer Commission must have completed an 80 hour course of instruction approved by the Secretary of the Maryland State Police.
Special Police Officer Commissions are valid for three calendar years from the date of issuance. Within the three years of the Commission an individual must complete, at a minimum,of twelve hours of in-service training. The required in-service training content has to be approved by the Secretary of the Maryland State Police.
