The buffer distance can be changed by unsubscribing from your existing Crime Alerts account and subscribing again with a different buffer distance during Step 3 of the process. The unsubscribe link can be found at the bottom of each Crime Alert e-mail. Our buffer distance option allows you to choose a specific radius around a home, business or school in order to learn more about crime activity in your community.

Analysis is the process of pulling meaning from chaos. When you first load up your agency in Community Crime Map, you may feel overwhelmed by all those dots on the map. What does it all mean? Is crime high in my area? Does the type of crime happening near my home pose a danger? When is all this crime happening? This blog post will teach you some basic crime analysis techniques so you can make sense of crime in your area. Empowered by this knowledge, you can help make your community a safer place.
Step One: Define What You Want to Know
Choose a specific problem you want to address and define it clearly as either a question or a statement. For instance, you can state your problem as an exploratory question such as What time of day do burglaries most often occur within a mile of my home?. On the other hand, you can describe an assumption you hold that you wish to test such as Burglaries occur most often at night. Weâll use these two problem definitions as our examples for the rest of the post.
Step Two: Select the Crime Relevant to Your Problem
Use the address buffer, crime type list and date range selector to view only the crime that is relevant to your specific question. Follow the steps below to filter out all the unnecessary data so youâre left with only the crime you care about. Feel free to follow along with your own address.

How To Prevent Break

Imagine the topology as being like a map, except instead of terrain, it maps time. The X-Coordinate indicates the hour of the day, while the Y-Coordinate indicates the day of the week. The Z-Coordinate is represented by the volume of activity at that hour and day.
Temporal topologies identify the level of crime activity at a particular day and hour.
You read the temporal topology just as you would read the density map in RAIDS. Look for areas of high activity across the 168 hour week. Police agencies use the temporal topology to understand when activity happens, when to deploy resources, and when to staff officers. Temporal topologies, using vivid colors and shapes to draw the readerâs attention to significant findings, can be much clearer and easier to interpret than reading through countless rows of mind-numbing cross tabulated data

How Does It Work
Law enforcement agencies keep detailed records about each incident that occurs in their jurisdiction. When an incident happens, the officer that responded to the incident writes a detailed report with information about the event including the location, people involved, related vehicles and other useful information. This information is stored in large, secure databases within each law enforcement agency. Between departments, these databases can vary in structure and complexity, and even the data itself can follow different standards to describe the event. This can make it difficult for two neighboring cities to share crime data and benefit from being able to analyze events and offenders that cross city boundaries. LexisNexiss regional data sharing products help centralize and standardize this information into a national database of crime to improve regional data sharing and analysis. What Do I Do If The Map Doesn’t Appear
Occasionally your browser will cache the application’s resources and will not replace them with a current version when the application is updated. This issue might affect the main mapping interface and/or the report pages. If this occurs you need to force your browser to refresh its cache and retrieve the latest resources. This can be done by visiting any page and pressing the F5 key. Alternatively you can also press Shift + R, Control + R, or Command + R for the same effect.
Look For Key Indicators
Visually, you might have noticed a few key indicators that crime has increased. Dont ignore these signs and be sure to talk with neighbors. Take a walk in the morning or during the day and become more familiar with the area.
If you notice a high density of homes for sale, it could mean that the neighborhood increased in value or has become a dangerous place to live. You may want to consult a realtor or a website for researching home values to see how property values have changed historically. Matching this data can help pinpoint downturns in the market and, if used with other indicators, can form a clearer picture of why the market might consider the neighborhood lower value.
Other indicators are more obvious, like bars over windows or broken glass on the sidewalk. If you notice glass on the ground, it could be related to a recent break-in. Check for other signs. Bars over windows are a dead giveaway that a neighborhood isnt safe. However, not every safety measure is bad. For instance, floodlights that illuminate a driveway offer excellent security and deterrence but dont necessarily indicate a bad neighborhood.
Walking or driving through the neighborhood, you may notice a high police presence. This can be either a good or bad thing depending on several of the factors listed above. However, you can also perform a crime lookup for a neighborhood online to see recently reported crimes and get a feel for where the hotspots are.
