How To Check Status Of Police Report

Don't Miss

Do I Need A Criminal Record Check Or A Vulnerable Sector Check

How to check Online Police Complaint or FIR Status

Different employers or institutions require different types of background checks.

A criminal record check simply verifies whether or not you have a criminal record.

A vulnerable sector check is a special type of criminal record check required for situations where you will be in a position of trust or authority over children, the elderly, the disabled, or another vulnerable group.

A vulnerable sector check involves a name-based search of the national repository of criminal convictions, a search of locally held convictions at Halifax Regional Police and a query of the pardoned sex-offender database. In some cases, you may be required to submit your fingerprints if there is a match based on either your name or a combination of your gender and date of birth to a pardoned sex offender record. Applicants with a potential match will be contacted by Halifax Regional Police and asked to come to Police Headquarters to have their fingerprints taken electronically. You can have your fingerprints taken Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is called redacting and it is done to protect the privacy of the people involved in the incident.

The Department redacts the names of all victims, all non-involved parties, all juveniles/minors and all suspects unless they have been booked into jail. This is a major reason why it takes time to prepare crime reports for online posting.

Once a suspect has been booked into jail, their name is no longer private. If they were booked into King County Jail you can view suspect information online at the King County Jail Register.

    Criminal History Report Contents

While each state differs in what they provide for different types of criminal record reports, the document will typically include information about any time an individual has been arrested and any dispositions resulting from the offense.

Some states differentiate between what you can see on your own criminal record, and what you can see for someone else.

EXAMPLE: In Alaska, the state differentiates its personal versus public criminal records as follows:

    • Your personal record:
  • Usually includes information reported to your state under other names or aliases.
  • Also usually reports info from any other state where you lived or were arrested.
  • Often only open to .
  • While a name-based check is typically sufficient when checking your own criminal record, if youâve recently changed your name and you want to be sure that your criminal record is complete, you may wish to consider using the fingerprint-based method.

When checking someone elseâs criminal record, a fingerprint check may be the more efficient choice, as you will receive information for all known names and aliases for that individual. If the national criminal history check is open to you, whether as a private citizen or an employer, this can also give you a wealth of detailed information.

Why Are These The Only Crimes Shown

With the Police Reports Map and 9-1-1 Response Map, SPD is making almost all of our reports available online. The Department attempted to be very thoughtful about what information was released and what was not. These decisions were not made to hide types of crimes from the public, instead decisions were made about who to protect.

The only reports that are not being released under this system are when the rights of the victim, age of the victim, possibility of revictimization or overall public safety/security issues take clear precedence over the public right to know.

Information on Rape and other sexual offenses, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Kidnapping, Suicides, locations that are sensitive , Homeland Security issues and tactical information that might compromise the safety of our officers are not being released in this system.

If the event is one of the many types we do show, but the location code was entered into the system incorrectly, the location of the event cannot then be verified. In this scenario, this particular event will not appear on the map at all, rather than providing possibly misleading information.

How To Get A Copy Of A Police Report

A police report is generated by the investigating officer who responds to a request for assistance at the scene of a car accident. The police report is a summary of information regarding the crashusually containing facts related to the accident and opinions of the investigating officer.

There are two ways to obtain a police report. One way will cost you money, the other probably will not. To obtain a paid copy of the police report, you need to request a copy from the local law enforcement office that drafted the report. Before leaving the scene of the crash, the investigating officer typically will hand you a receipt with the identification number for the police report. Call the traffic division of the local law enforcement agency that responded to the scene of the car accident, pay the administrative fee , and you should have no problem obtaining a copy.

If you do not have or do not know the identification number for the police report, you can provide the date, time, and location of the car accident, along with your name, to assist in locating the report.

To obtain a free copy of the police report, you can ask the insurance adjuster who is handling your claim if they requested the report, and ask for a copy.

Regardless of how you obtain the police report, it may take a few weeks for the investigating officer to complete the report, and for it to become available.
