Spot And Avoid Fake Charities

Many legitimate charities support local firefighters and police, active duty military, and veterans, or their families. But other charities lie about what they do with donations or how much they spend on programs. And some are outright scams. Here are some things you can do to avoid donating to a fake charity:

  • Pay attention to the charitys name. Scammers use names that sound like well-known charities, or that include words like veteran, foundation, operation, hero, wounded, disabled, or homeless. This infographic has examples of sham charities that used names that sounded legitimate, but lied to donors.
  • Pay attention to how the charity or fundraiser asks you to pay. Scammers ask you to donate through wire transfers, by putting money onto gift cards and sending them the codes on the back, or leaving money under your front doormat for pick up. Dont do it. Only scammers will ask you to donate that way.
  • Its safest to donate by credit card or check after youve done some research on the charity.
  • If youre donating online, make sure the webpage where you enter your payment information has https in the web address. That means your information is encrypted and transmitted securely. But encryption alone doesnt mean the site is legit. Scammers know how to encrypt, too.

Paul Leblanc 1964 2007

Our Police Dog Donation Program is named in memory of the late Paul LeBlanc of DeSoto County Mississippi. Paul worked full time for the DeSoto County Fire Emergency Management Agency and served part-time with the DeSoto County Sheriffs Office. Paul was a full time handler of both an Explosives Detection Dog and a Tracking Bloodhound. Paul was a great father and husband and an incredible friend.

Paul was a very dedicated handler and constantly strove to learn as much as he could to improve performance of the working dogs in his area.

He organized a number of programs and seminars in his area to help other handlers and working dog organizations. Paul always encouraged networking among departments and handlers and constantly attempted to incorporate new ideas to promote strong handlers and productive working dogs. Paul was also the membership director of the American Police Dog Tactics Association. Paul was an asset to the K-9 community and will greatly be missed.

Social Media And Crowdfunding Posts Asking You To Donate

Especially after a tragedy or military-related event, fundraisers and causes show up on social media and people create crowdfunding campaigns to help those affected. The safest way to donate on social media or crowdfunding campaign is to give to people you actually know. Here are a few ideas to help you give safely:

  • Dont assume the request is legitimate because a friend posted it. Pay attention to who first posted the request on social media. Contact your friend privately or offline to ask them about the post they shared.
  • Check where the link to donate goes. Does it go to a crowdfunding campaign for an individual or to a charity? If the money is going to an individual campaign organizer, are you sure that person will pass the money on to the cause you want to support? Confirm with whoever posted the link that they know the person behind the fundraising. If the money goes to a charity, do your research on the charity. Just because a friend recommended it doesnt guarantee that the charity will spend your money wisely.
  • Keep in mind that your donation must be to a charity to be tax deductible. If its important to you that the donation is tax deductible, confirm that the organization is registered with the IRS as a charity. Look up the organization in the IRSs Tax Exempt Organization Search tool. Donations to individuals and PACs are not tax deductible.

Police Foundations And Their Corporate Donors Give Cops Secret Slush Funds

Senior Politics Reporter, HuffPost

Protests across the country against police brutality are starting to chipaway at once-sacrosanct law enforcement budgets. But one significant source of police funding remains mostly untouched: private police foundations, which influence law enforcement efforts largely out of sight of the public.

Set up as private charities that generally donate to their local police departments, these foundations are a way for law enforcement to raise and spend large sums of money without the publics input or oversight. Their donors tend to be name-brand corporations and local businesses, and police departments admit openly that foundations allow them to make acquisitions the taxpayers wont cover.

It funds things the city cant fund, a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department said in 2017 of the citys foundation, and provides us flexibility to do things quickly.

But the details of how exactly police foundations spend their money are rarely public. And because theyre private nonprofits, they dont have to report the names of their donors or where the money goes. When reporters and advocacy groups have pried information loose, they often find that a police foundation is supported by a small group of powerful interests. They also find that police use these off-the-books budgets to expand some of law enforcements most questionable surveillance capabilities.

Who disproportionately benefits from police foundations is another matter.

Public Safety Fundraising Appeals Make Your Donations Count

Every day, police and firefighters risk their lives to make your community safer. To show your support, you may consider making a donation when a fundraiser calls on behalf of a fire or police service organization. Before you write the check, please consider all the facts concerning Public Safety fundraising appeals.

  • Who are members of the organization? Simply having the words police or firefighter in an organizations name doesnt mean police or firefighters are members of the group.
  • Will my donation benefit my local community? Just because an organization claims it has local ties or works with local police or firefighters doesnt mean your contributions will be used locally or for public safety purposes. The organization should be able to provide you with written information describing the programs your donation will support, and their fundraising costs before you donate.
  • Will my donation be used to pay for the services of a professional fundraiser? Most solicitations for police and fire service organizations are made by paid professional fundraisers.
  • Is my donation deductible? Donations to some police or firefighter groups may not be tax deductible. Many kinds of organizations are tax exempt, including fraternal organizations, labor unions, and trade associations, but donations to them may not be tax deductible.

If your child desperately clings to a tattered teddy, do not get rid of it to start with. They have already formed an emotional attachment to this toy, and it may cause more harm than good to part with it. They may cause an argument and refuse to let it go.

Instead, try to gently ease the toy away from them over time. Right now, though, leave itthere will be plenty more toys that your child has that you can donate.

If its their first teddy that they ever had or their comforter, dont even bother trying to get rid of it. Remember what you were like with your teddy? I had mine with me in the same room up until my twenties. That teddy may stay with them for the rest of their life.

Police dogs bravely protect the public and their officer handlers from dangerous criminals, or help scavenge for evidence and contraband undetectable to the human nose. Departments are no less choosy about a canine than they are a human recruit, thus may eschew offers of dog donations. For law enforcement to accept a donated dog, the pooch needs to possess the right characteristics for the field.

Law enforcement agencies may accept a donated canine patrol dog with the right qualities and a good recommendation.

A police dog is essentially an officer with four paws and a tail, so recruiting a new dog is like screening out prospective police academy applicants. Departments need to be choosy because the lives of the public and their officers are at stake, as well as the potential for lawsuits.

Law enforcement agencies may accept a donated canine patrol dog with the right qualities and a good recommendation.

Police dog recruiters begin with the assumption that only a chosen few dogs in the United States make the grade for police work. They don’t want a dog bred for beautiful conformation in the show ring, but a dog bred with a passion for hard work. Even selecting a dog from a line bred for work doesn’t guarantee a good police dog, as each pup has individual behavioral quirks.

Law enforcement agencies may accept a donated canine patrol dog with the right qualities and a good recommendation.

Police officers have to rely on experienced trainers to select the most-suited dogs, who show strong prey drive, confidence and agility. Full veterinarian assessments are conducted as well to catch any physical deformities or ailments. Puppies are too young to screen for behavioral traits. Dogs generally are reviewed around 2 years of age.

    Mail Asking You To Donate

Organizations that help veterans and military families often use direct mail to create awareness and fundraise. The good thing about getting a charitable solicitation in the mail is that it gives you time to research the organization.

Here are a few things to do or consider when you get a donation request in the mail:

    • Look for details about what happens with your donation. Check if the letter has details about the organizations programs, past successes, and plans to use funds in the future. If the letter doesnt specify that, be suspicious.
    • Know that if you respond, youll get more mail. Charities often share donor lists. If you want to stop getting solicitations or get fewer, write to individual charities and ask them to delete your name from their mailing lists. It may take some work to get them to do this. You can do this even if you donate.
