How To Prevent Break

Wherever you live, feeling safe in your home can bring greater peace of mind and happiness. Check out our home security checklist to make sure your home is as protected as possible.

You may also want to consider a monitored home security system or security cameras to help protect your loved ones and valuables. Just seeing a security camera or home security sign or sticker can deter a would-be intruder. And monitored systems can call for law enforcement if a break-in does occur.

If you go this route, there are some things to remember:

  • Arming: Make sure your system or camera is armed when youre away or asleep. Some systems can be armed from an app or put on an arming schedule to make things easier.
  • Placement: Place cameras so they get a good view of doorways and windows.
  • Sensors: Be sure to install window and door sensors throughout your home, not just at the front door. No matter where the intruder enters, you want the alarm to sound and scare them away.
  • Security signs: Place yard signs and window stickers prominently so they will catch the attention of potential intruders.

If you’re in an emergency, call 911.

If you’ve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.

The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state to state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.

Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. A judge may issue a temporary restraining order to protect you immediately. To get a longer-term order, your judge may want either or both a full court hearing and your abuser’s presence.

The police can enforce a protective order. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

  • Custody of children

  • Forcing the abuser to leave a home

Some states require the abuser to surrender all firearms.

Suspect Had Been Known To Campus Police

Open records request starts investigation in Johns Creek Police department

Jones had come to campus authorities attention in September, when authorities found out Jones had made a comment about possessing a gun to someone unaffiliated with the university, Longo said at Mondays news conference. But that person never actually saw the gun in question, he said.

Through the course of the threat assessment teams investigation, we learned of a prior criminal incident involving a concealed weapon violation that occurred outside the city of Charlotteville in February of 2021, Longo said, adding the suspect was required to report that incident to the university but never did. The schools judicial council took over the case, and the results are pending.

Jones was also involved in a hazing investigation on campus that was closed because witnesses would not cooperate, Longo said.

It is important to share that information with you, he said, to let you know that he had been called to our attention.

Jones is listed on UVAs athletics website as a football player in 2018 who as a freshman did not participate in any games. He attended Varina High School and Petersburg High School, where he played football as a linebacker and running back, according to his university athletics bio. While in high school, Jones was Key Club president and a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society, the bio says.

Student Suspect In Custody After 3 Football Players Shot Dead And 2 People Wounded At The University Of Virginia Police Say

Police have in custody a University of Virginia student and ex-UVA football player suspected of fatally shooting three current players and wounding two other people late Sunday at the schools main campus in Charlottesville as a bus returned from a class field trip, school officials said.

The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., faces three charges of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo Sr. told reporters Monday morning as an hourslong manhunt came to an end and authorities lifted a campus lockdown order.

Jones was arrested without incident around 11 a.m. ET about 80 miles east of Charlottesville in Henrico County, the county police agency said in a statement. An officer spotted the vehicle Jones was driving in the eastern area of Henrico where he was taken into custody without incident, according to news release from the police division.

Police have not offered a motive for the attack.

Those killed were Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and DSean Perry, university President Jim Ryan said. The two wounded students are being treated at UVA Medical Center, with one in critical condition and the other in good condition, he said, declining to name them.

    Shooting Prompted Immediate Lockdowns

The attack happened Sunday on a bus returning from a class trip to Washington, DC, where the class had seen a play, university officials said. It was not immediately clear if Jones was part of that class or attended the field trip.

Police responded to a report of shots fired around 10:30 p.m. in an area near a parking garage on Culbreth Road and surrounded by academic buildings, Ryan said. Two slain victims were inside the bus, with the third victim taken to a hospital, where he died, Longo said.

The call prompted a shelter-in-place alert that was lifted about 12 hours later, Longo said. More than 500 people sheltered throughout campus buildings, including in libraries and classrooms, he said.

Monday classes at the university were canceled. The school canceled classes Tuesday to to give students the opportunity to reflect, mourn and gather with each other, according to a news release. A family and community assistance center has also been set up on campus to provide UVA community members with mental health services, according to UVA Emergency Management officials.

Classes were also canceled Monday at Charlottesville City Schools, the K-12 district said in a letter to families. A UVA mens basketball game scheduled for Monday evening has also been canceled, the university said.

    What Is A Police Report

The Retirement Chronicles: More Local Police Reports: A Double Treat!

People file a police report with law enforcement for a wide variety of reasons. For example, domestic disputes, traffic accidents, burglaries, home invasions, fraud, theft, stalking, violence, and many other reasons. To file a report, citizens usually begin by calling 911, or their local police departments non-emergency line, to report the incident.

Once a citizen reports an incident, dispatchers assign it to local officers in the area. The police officers travel to the appropriate location via car, motorcycle, or other police vehicles. Then, the officers evaluate the situation, make observations, interview witnesses, record data, and complete forms and reports required by their local police department.

Police officers also initiate the filing of a report to record the data and gather the details associated with criminal and civil incidents such as car accidents, burglaries, assaults, and robberies, just to name a few.

Officers gather and record a great deal of information and data on a police report. This is to help ensure thorough and accurate investigations and to support criminal proceedings if they become necessary. Also, background verification services may use them in background checks. The information contained in the typical police report may vary from county to county, but most capture very similar information.
