Wholesale Car Auctions In Florida: Attend As Buyer & Seller

In the Sunshine State, if you want to buy a car for the lowest price possible, you should attend a wholesale car auction. On the flip side, if youre hoping to create a lucrative car selling business based on ongoing relationships with other dealers, you should look into hosting wholesale car auctions.

Whichever role appeals to you, theres one thing you need to do first: get your dealer license with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles . You cant sell cars at a wholesale auction without a license. And, perhaps more surprisingly, you cant buy at these auctions without a dealer license, either.

Important Information To Know As A Bidder

1. Bidders must be prepared to pay for any vehicle they purchase as soon as they make the winning bid.

Vehicles must be paid for in full by 4:45 PM on the Wednesday following the auction. Anyone not prepared to pay immediately, should not bid. Acceptable means of payment include cash, debit card and credit cards. American Express is not accepted. A 3% convenience fee will be added to all credit/debit card transactions.

If the winning bidder has not paid for his/her purchase by 4:45 PM on the Wednesday following the auction, the second highest bidder will be contacted and given the option to purchase the vehicle at his/her bid amount.

2. Auction bidders will be given 72 hours, or by 4:30 PM, following the auction to pick up their purchased vehicles.

Any vehicle not picked up will be forfeited and be placed in the next upcoming auction. NO REFUND will be given to the buyer after the allotted time has expired.

3. Each auctioned vehicle must be paid for in full, prior to the winning bidder removing the vehicle from the premises.

If more than one vehicle is purchased by a particular bidder, ALL vehicles must be paid for prior to ANY of the vehicles being removed from the premises.

4. Auction bidders may pre-register for an auction, beginning one week prior to each scheduled auction, or they may register between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM on the day of the auction.

Preregistration begins on the Wednesday prior to each scheduled auction.

11. A winning bid is considered a contract.

HOW TO FIND and BUY at Government Surplus Auctions

Unfortunately, obtaining your auto auction license is not the first step to becoming a legally licensed motor vehicle auctioneer in Florida. It is the last step.

There are several requirements before applying for your license:

Successful completion of a Florida state-approved dealer license class:Before you can get your car auction dealer’s license, you need to pass a Florida dealer license class from an official dealer training school. The 16-hour Florida Car Dealer Pre-License Class through OnlineAutoDealerEd.com, for example, satisfies the licensing requirements for every dealer license type in Florida except Type SF. It covers subjects such as franchise agreements and the types of auto manufacturers.

Once students pass the 50-question final exam and complete a DMV questionnaire, they can print out a certificate for proof of completion. Although several schools offer pre-licensing classes, they all have very similar requirements.

$25,000 Auto Auction Surety Bond:To get any car auction license in Florida, you must pay a one-time surety bond. In addition, every Florida auto dealer must have a dealer bond for $25,000, but you only have to pay between 1 and 15 percent of that figure, depending on your credit score and other factors.

A surety bond protects the public against general liability if a licensed dealer causes harm while violating any statutes related to car dealing. In addition, prospective dealers can apply to special bond programs if they have poor credit.

Applying For A Dealer License

If you want an opportunity to bid against the dealers, youll need a license to buy cars at auction.

First on your to-do list should be a visit to your states Department of Motor Vehicles website, where youll find specific rules and regulations. These vary by state but usually require submitting an application answering questions about you and your business, along with an application fee that can range from fifty to several hundred dollars. You may also need to provide a detailed business plan, a business license, and tax or employer identification numbers necessary to process customer-paid sales tax or employee income taxes.

Unfortunately, the list doesnt stop there, as most states also require proof of insurance for the business and any inventory, a fingerprint card to be used for a background check, as well as a purchase and sale agreement or signed lease for your businesss location. Of course, placement of your dealership must abide by all local zoning laws and, in some instances, meet requirements for square footage, display space, equipped and operational service bays, and signage. A state representative may request an in-person visit to verify youve met all requirements.

Car Auctions Open To The Public

Popular Mechanics reports there are two major categories of car auctions open to the public, government car auctions and public car auctions:

  • Government or police auctions: These include county and city vehicles like buses, police cruisers, utility trucks and more. These auctions also sell impound cars that have been confiscated because of traffic violations and crime. Popular Mechanics warns that you will face expert competition from used car dealers, taxi companies, exporters and others who know mechanics well and understand the value of the vehicles on the block.
  • Public car auctions: These may include repossessed vehicles from banks, wholesale lots of cars, flood junkers, bottom-of-the-barrel trade-ins and sometimes high-end sports cars and SUVs. The quality and reliability of the stock varies from auction to auction, so be prepared to do your homework. Because these auctions have become more popular since the economic downturn, competition for the best deals is fierce. In fact, you may end up paying more than market price if you don’t take care not to overbid.

Not all Police auctions are old retired cruisers! These great auctions include various seized or impounded vehicles as well. Some will have damage for obvious reasons, but many are just confiscated and good as new. This can be from your run-of-the-mill minivan to even exotic cars.

For those that do want a retired police car. You won’t be playing policeman with lights and sirens. The car will be stripped police gear with perhaps the exception of the spot lights. How Do Police Auctions Work

THE DARK KNIGHT GOTHAM CITY POLICE LICENSE PLATE

Police auctions work in the way most auctions do. For example, an auction will start with a set amount of time for bidding along with a starting bid. As bidders participate the price will increase until there is a high bidder that will win the vehicle.

The high bidder will typically have 24-48 hours after the close of the auction to submit payment for the vehicle or forfeit, along with loosing a deposit if any. If the winner is in another state, that person will need to contact an auto transport company like National Express to get a quote as they would from any auction.
