How to do a Background Check on Yourself – Background Check for Immigration
  • Use a Consumer Reporting Agency to do a background check
  • Most court information is public record
  • Equifax and other sites offer one free credit report per year

Have you done an online background check of yourself lately? There are several reasons you should.

There might be erroneous information about you floating around the Internet or in your credit report. Maybe you’ll find a picture of yourself or a comment you made years ago somewhere that’s a little embarrassing.

These things will pop up and hurt your chances the next time you apply for a loan or a job. Fortunately, you can take steps to correct or remove this damaging information.

It’s also a very good idea to do a background check before taking on a roommate or going out on a date with that new crush you met online. You never know what sort of worrying or dangerous details could be lurking in someone’s past.

Because checking people’s background is such a pressing need, there are dozens of ways to go about this. Fortunately, several ways won’t cost you a thing.

Before I continue, I should point out a tricky fact about background checks. If you are performing a background check as a landlord or employer or for credit, medical or insurance reasons you can’t use just any service.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have to use a Consumer Reporting Agency. A CRA has to maintain certain standards for data protection and offer dispute resolution.

How Do I Get A ‘police Clearance Certificate’ Or Criminal Record

There is no such thing as a police clearance certificate in New Zealand. If you are convicted of a crime, a criminal record is created and held in a database by the Ministry of Justice. If you are asked for a police clearance certificate, police record, police file, police check, or criminal check, a copy of your criminal record from the Ministry of Justice should meet the requirements. If you have no convictions, you will receive a letter stating that is the case.

To apply, visit the Ministry of Justice websites section on criminal records.

Police Vetting is only available to approved organisations who meet the Vetting Services approval criteria. A Police vet is sometimes incorrectly called a police clearance or a police check. Find out more about Police vetting.

An RCMP background check is the only official way to perform a criminal background check on someone in Canada. The RCMP database is the only information network in Canada which has access to criminal records.

    Why Background Checks Happen

Specific reasons for conducting background checks vary depending on who needs to run the check.

Employers typically use background checks in hopes of avoiding financial loss through fraud or theft, to protect company reputation, and to avoid running afoul of laws banning undocumented immigrants and others ineligible for employment. In addition, employers in some regulated industries are forbidden from placing persons with certain criminal convictions in certain jobs.

Landlords and property managers also run background checks, typically because they want to avoid tenants who dont pay their rent. To minimize this risk, they may screen for dodgy credit histories. Many landlords may also run checks to avoid renting to people on sex-crime registries or with histories of domestic abuse or other violent crimes.

There are several benefits to running a self background check. It can help you:

    • Anticipate and address questions that could arise in the course of an employment or housing screening.
    • Uncover errors and inaccuracies in financial and legal records compiled about you, and gives you a chance to correct them.
    • Save time and money when compared to retrieving all your personal records individually.
    • Equip you with a report you can share that documents your history and any supplemental information you care to provide.

If you are requesting a background check for employment or licensing within the U.S., you may be required by state statute or federal law to submit your request through your state identification bureau, the requesting federal agency, or another authorized channeling agency.

The FBIs authority to conduct an Identity History Summary check for noncriminal justice purposes is based upon Public Law 92-544. Pursuant to that law, the FBI is empowered to exchange Identity History Summary information with officials of state and local governments for employment, licensingwhich includes volunteersand other similar noncriminal justice purposes, if authorized by a state statute which has been approved by the Attorney General of the United States. Disclosure Of Youth Records

Free Background Check Without Paying – Background Check Yourself

This is one of the most significant changes to record checks in Ontario. Youth records are only permitted to be disclosed in two circumstances:

  • To the youth themselves, who is not permitted to further disclose Findings of Guilt and must remove any results from the record check before sharing with agencies or
  • To the Government of Canada or the government of a province or a municipality for purposes of employment or the performances of services, with or without remuneration
  • Only federal, provincial and municipal government agencies will receive youth records.

The PRCRA regulates how police services release Police Record Checks containing youth records to applicants. Up until now, police services have released a PRC containing youth records directly to the applicant who then provide the PRC to the organization or volunteer agency. The federal and provincial government has found this approach to be contrary to the Federal Youth Criminal Justice Act .

The only authorized release of a PRC containing youth records will be to a federal, provincial or municipal government. Applicants can gain access to their own record through the Federal Access to Information process but this record is not a PRC and is not allowed to be shared with any other agency.

Police services are unable to disclose whether or not there is a youth record.
