The Department of Police Services responds to and investigates all crimes and incidents that occur on CSUN-owned and leased property, including a one-mile radius surrounding our campus. There are several ways in which you can contact the university police in the event of a police, fire or medical emergency. Certified police dispatchers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You should always report criminal activity, fire, injury, or hazards to the Department of Police Services immediately by calling 911 for emergencies or crimes in progress, or 677-2111 for non-emergencies. You can file a police report in person at the Department of Police Services , or an officer can be sent to your location. Select reports may be filed online. If you would like to report a crime anonymously, call the We-Tip hotline at 677-TIPS . If you require a copy of a police report, contact the university polices Records Unit at 677-3224. If you are eligible, you can get copies of reports for a nominal fee.
Has someone damaged, defaced or vandalized public or private property? This may include:
- Breaking windows, mailboxes, throwing eggs, spray painting, writing or drawing on property.
- Accepted only if there are no known suspects.Please Note: If you were a victim of graffiti vandalism, paint vouchers and graffiti wipes are available for pick up at Police Headquarters.

Contact Your Insurance Company
Though going through the CHP itself is your best bet, you may wish to try the quicker approach of contacting your insurance company. It can generally obtain a copy of the polices accident report while conducting its collision investigation. Whether it can legally provide you with a copy depends on the company, the insurance and the incident. It may be able to help, or it may refer you back to the CHP.

How Much Will It Cost How Can I Pay For It
The cost of a report is listed below with the exception of a Domestic Violence report which is released at no cost to the victim pursuant to Family Code section 6228. If your request is approved, you will be contacted to arrange pick-up and payment of the report. If your request is denied, you will receive a written denial in accordance with Government Code section 6255.
The cost to obtain a police or EMS incident report is $17.00.
The cost to obtain a police arrest report is $25.00.
Traffic accident reports have a separate fee structure:

How Long Does It Take To Get The Report
Timing depends on three factors: the responsible law enforcement agency, the severity of the injuries and whether that is an ongoing criminal investigation such as a DUI. Perhaps the single most important factor is the agency, which is determined by accident location. California Highway Patrol , which handles incidents occurring on a freeway, is usually the quickest. They get the job done within a matter of days, and your lawyer can usually obtain the CHP report in less than one week, sometimes in as little as 3-5 days. Rarely does CHP take longer than 7 days. SDPD, which handles incidents on the streets in the City of San Diego, is a little slower. They can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks, or longer. Other agencies, including other police departments and the San Diego County Sheriff, have varying processing times but most are closer to that of SDPD, which is 2-4 weeks. If there are severe injuries, or a death occurred, the investigation will take much longer and the report will often need to be reviewed by upper management within the agency. Requesting A Police Report By Mail
The process of requesting a copy of a police report by mail is a bit more involved. In many jurisdictions, you are required to make your Public Access Request via mail. Typically, the agency will provide a form online for you to fill out, but some places are fine with you writing a letter to ask for the police report.
1. Figure out where to send the Public Access Request form or letter.
Your local police department may have a specific address and addressee for police report requests listed on their website. If they dont, simply address it to the Records and Identification Division, and use the general address listed online for the department.
2. Fill out the form or write the letter.
After you have found the location to send your request, you should be able to easily find out if they want you to send a request form or a letter. If the information is not readily available on the site, just call and ask which method they prefer. If it is available, filling out a request form is typically the easiest method because you wont have to worry about leaving out information.
If you write a letter instead of filling out the form, be sure to include the following information:
- Your Name, Birthdate, and Address
- The date and location of the incident
- Your role in the case
- The officers name who filed the report
- What exactly you are requesting

What To Do If You Forgot To Make A Written Report

Who Can Get A Police Report
Victim of a crime:
If you are the victim of a vandalism or burglary, you are entitled to receive a copy of the report. If your incident resulted in an arrest, you will receive a redacted copy of the report until the case is adjudicated through the DAâs office.
Traffic collision participants:
If you are involved in a traffic collision, you are entitled to receive a copy of your report. Only individuals directly involved in the accident â drivers, passengers, and registered owners of vehicles â are entitled. You insurance company is entitled to receive a copy and may request it on your behalf.
Victim of assault or domestic violence:
If you are the victim of an assault or domestic violence, you are entitled to receive a copy of the report. If your incident resulted in an arrest, you will receive a redacted copy of the report until the case is adjudicated through the DAâs office.

Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is this an Emergency or is there an immediate threat to you or others?
- Is the crime in progress or just occurred within the last 2-3 minutes?
- Did the incident just occur or the suspect has a felony warrant and you know where the suspect is?
- Can you identify the suspect or were a witness to the car break in?
- Was there a weapon involved?
If you answered YES to any of the above questions, !
If you answered NO to all of the above questions, filing an online police report is the quickest way to receive a report filed for a police officer to review.
