“Harassment” is legally defined as repeated, unwanted contact. This contact can come in any form, from in-person contact to internet or phone communications. Harassment via text message is yet another form that can be very brutal, emotional and scary for the individual being harassed.

Harassment does not have to be threatening to be “harassing.”

It can take the form of abusive messages or text message “spam.” Regardless of the situation, it is not legal nor justified and you have the right to take action.

Here are the specific steps to take in order to report a case of text harassment.

Gather As Much Info As You Can

Police are going to need somewhere to start, so itâs a good idea to get your basic facts down: what was lost, where and when did it happen. Where and when you think your item was lost/taken is important, because the policeâs first step is probably to look at security footage. We spoke to someone who left their phone in a cab officers at their local police station were able to coordinate with the baoâans in the lane they were dropped off at to check security footage, track a license plate, and get the phone back. If you are in a large public place like a mall or a sports complex, the facilityâs baoâan are also a good stop for security footage. The simpler you make it for the police officers to follow, the better your experience will be.

Reflect On What You Consider Suspicious

Stereotypes surrounding people of color are abundant in the United States and can influence even the most genuine people.

These stereotypes have infiltrated peopleâs thoughts through negative media portrayals, inaccurate social media posts, and even racist relatives. In fact, itâs not uncommon to buy into stereotypes and prejudices without even realizing it.

One prime example, of these inaccurate portrayals, is that of Black teenagers with their hoods up. Some people automatically assume that these young people are up to no good, but there can be many other explanations for wearing a hood up including cold weather or a sense of style.

Overall, the problem with stereotypes is that not everyone recognizes that they are being influenced. For this reason, itâs important to question the thoughts that filter into your mind and ask yourself why you are thinking along those lines. You can help combat racism when you begin with addressing and undoing your own biases.

File A Restraining Order

If youâre in an emergency situation, call 911.

If youâve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.

The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state to state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.

Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. If you need protection right away, a judge may issue a temporary restraining order. To get a longer-term order, your judge may want either or both a full court hearing and your abuserâs presence.

The police can enforce a protective order. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

  • Custody of children

  • Forcing the abuser to leave a home

In some states, a protective order requires the abuser to surrender all firearms.
