Some jurisdictions offer an exception to age maximums for military veterans. The NYPD allows candidates who are over the age of 35 but who have had active military service to deduct six years from their age — taking the maximum age up to 41. Other jurisdictions relax test or academic requirements for recruits with military service. The Fort Worth Police Department gives veterans extra points on their civil service exam, while the NYPD waives its college credit requirement.
What About Basic Training
Completing a basic police academy prior to your hiring is dependent on the agency you apply to. Some will only hire upon completion of the academy others hire you and then send you through the academy afterward. Check with the agency youre applying to for further information.
