How Long Do Police Officers Train

Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Entry Level Testing

Excluding field training, the average length of a basic law enforcement training program in a training academy was about 840 hours, or 21 weeks. This was about 2 weeks longer than was observed in the 2006 CLETA. Academies operated by agencies with special jurisdictions had the longest training programs , followed by county police academies . Academies operated by state POST agencies , technical schools , and sheriffsâ offices had the shortest training programs on average. Across all types of academies, each recruit spent an average of 806 hours each completing basic training .

Physical Training And Tactics Department

The Physical Training and Tactics Department prepares recruits for the physical rigors of police work and tactically prepares them for the dangers they may encounter. The training includes extensive training in calisthenics, defensive tactics, straight baton, expandable baton, frisking and cuffing, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and water safety skills.

These skills are further reinforced in interactive exercises that prepare recruits to combine multiple skills in simulated police encounters. Examples of such sessions are the Car Stop Workshop, a three-day workshop conducted at Floyd Bennett Field, and Field Encounters, a workshop conducted in the main gymnasium that incorporates physical exertion with scenario-based training.

Physical and nutritional guidance are provided to recruit officers during their training by staff members who are certified as Law Enforcement Fitness Specialists from the Cooper Institute.

How A Citizens Police Academy Can Help Improve Community Relations

A CPA provides an excellent opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the procedures, responsibilities, demands and laws officers face

Its a tough time to be a cop. Typically, when members of law enforcement watch the latest police video to hit the mainstream media, we have one of two reactions:

a. That was a good arrest . I would have done the same thing.b. What the $%& *?! What were they thinking?! Another idiot tarnishing the badge!

Unfortunately, the general public seems much more inclined to the latter reaction. More unfortunately, this perception creates more suspicion, hostility and fear toward law enforcement as a whole. At the root of many of these negative emotions is a basic lack of knowledge about law enforcement. We tend to fear what we dont understand.

A Tool to InformSo how do we, as police leaders, counter the misconceptions, fear and hostility toward law enforcement? One way is by seeking to educate an uninformed or misinformed public.

Make no mistake: Theres no light switch solution or immediate fix. Negative public perception is an elephant that can only be eaten one bite at a time. It will take dedication and continued effort a Herculean task, perhaps, but not impossible. The creation of a Citizens Police Academy is a great way to educate the community we serve, especially in smaller jurisdictions.

Strengths Of Current Training Practices

Police Officer Recruitment – Job Related Fitness Test 2022

Another strength that the interviewed law enforcement agencies share is their ability to critically evaluate the efficacy of the current state of their training practices. To this end, training coordinators and instructors aim to identify shortcomings of their current practices and look to improve the state of training of their agencies. For instance, when recognizing that teaching police officers the perfect technique in a static setting did not ensure transfer to the complex and dynamic settings that officers encounter on the street , the instructors began looking to adjust their approach to skill learning. Current changes that the interviewed law enforcement agencies aim to implement into their training include moving away from isolated technique mastery of a single skill , implementing decision-based training , and changing pedagogical approaches from strictly linear to non-linear , combating the common principles that are still reflected in training curricula and delivery. The ability of training instructors, coordinators, and law enforcement agencies to be self-critical and identify areas of improvements in training facilitates the development of current practices.

Police Physical Abilities Test

Candidates ultimately selected as police officers will be entering one of the most physically demanding professions. Police work requires continuous physical readiness in its day to day duties.

The Police Officer Physical Abilities Test is a highly regulated selection procedure that is a major challenge for most candidates. Commitment and preparation are required in order to pass. Whether the department youre applying with calls it PAT, POPAT, PTT, POPS, POWER or PAA, the police physical abilities test is always pass/fail and a true gut-buster.

Most departments have you take the physical abilities test after you past the police written exam. However, some agencies believe that it is more cost effective to conduct the physical abilities test first, in order to avoid the cost of administering the written test.

Pros And Cons Of Becoming A Police Officer

This isnt an 8 to 5 office job. Its an on-your-feet, always-alert, out-and-about career. And while thats a good thing, it also comes with a few downsides. Heres the straight story on what to expect in a career as a police officer:

Pros:

  • Job stability: Police officers work for the local, state, or federal government, which dont generally go bust or downsize like companies.
  • Benefits: Many government agencies, unlike most private companies, still provide pension plans so people can comfortably retire not to mention life insurance policies and more time off.
  • Advancement opportunities: The combination of job stability and retirement benefits leads to a fairly consistent hierarchy in constant need of new people moving up the ranks.
  • Training: Police officers receive excellent training that can be used beyond their careers in police work, should they want to go into private security, firearms training, or similar work.
  • Sense of pride: In a 2016 study of law enforcement officers, 58% reported feeling proud of their work nearly always or often.
  • Collegiality: Like other coworkers, police officers bond over shared duties. But those bonds are reinforced with constant teamwork in the face of danger.

Police Training: Getting Ahead

Officers who are currently in the field, as well as anyone hoping to become a police officer, can study up and better equip themselves for the job. Human relations is a huge one that helps with de-escalation, McKenna says. Id recommend the book Arresting Communication to every police officer.

Anything that teaches you to observe and assess an environment is extremely useful. To act in the heat of a moment, you have to make a decision. To make a decision, you have to understand the situation. To do that, you have to observe, McKenna says. Most of our training is focused on response to an attack. But the best officers make a habit of assessing every environment until its done subconsciously. Habits like that can save your life.

Physical activity is another aspect of police training you can do at all stages of the career path. Being physically healthy improves your survivability, the likeliness that you will recover from a wound and even the sharpness of your mental activity, McKenna says.

Signing Up For The Police Academy Means Hard Days Ahead

Besides the academic requirements, recruits have to be proficient in several areas considered to be high liabilities. These subjects include firearms, defensive tactics, first aid, and vehicle operations. The high liability courses involve long and grueling days.

Recruits may spend hot summer days outside on the firearms range, or they may sweat it out on the mats in defensive tactics. Due to the intensity of the training, injuries are common.

Police Academies Are Learning Institutions

Above all else, police academies are places of learning. Each state has different requirements dealing with the mandated curriculum and training hours a recruit has to have before getting law enforcement or POST certification. Typically, academy recruits will spend upwards of 800 hours or more in training before they graduate. Most of this instruction takes place in a classroom.

Academics are very important in police academy training. Recruits usually take at least one test a week while they are in the academy, and there are strict rules in place about getting a passing score.

In Florida, for example, recruits must receive an 80% or higher on each test while they are in the academy. If they fail to achieve 80% on any test, they have to leave the academy. Developing effective study habits is essential for academy success.

Phds In Criminal Justice

Getting a Ph.D. in criminal justice would put you in rare company, especially if you want to work at an agency. Although 29% of chiefs and sheriffs have a bachelors and 32% have a masters, only 3% have a doctoral degree.

Yet a Ph.D. in criminal justice opens several possibilities. If you want to teach at a university or conduct research, its essential. Even if academia isnt your thing, you could work to create or change policy.

Ph.D. programs are, by nature, individualized. Your main output is a dissertation, which is written after conducting original research. By the end of the program, you will be an expert in a small sliver of the criminal justice field. But what sliver? Depending on the program, you could, for example, bone up on budgetary procedures and strategic planning, both of which are necessary to run a department, or you could explore the social determinants of a specific type of crime in a specific area.

A Ph.D. in criminal justice will likely include the following courses:

Weve written about doctoral degrees in criminal justice at length, including about the different types of criminal justice doctorates. Specifically, check out our interview with a criminal justice program director to see if a Ph.D. is worth it for you.

Police Officer Salary And Job Growth Expectations

Salaries in law enforcement vary significantly. Your salary will depend on whether you work in a rural area or a large city, whether you have seniority or youre fresh out of the academy, and whether you take overtime or leave at the end of your shift.

That said, the median detective and police officer salary nationwide was $63,380 as of May 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Those working for the federal government did especially well, earning an average of $87,130. You should also calculate the value of benefits into the compensation package. Police officers typically enjoy paid vacation, sick leave, medical and life insurance, and uniform allowances. Plus, thanks to pensions, they can often afford to retire at a younger age than most.

As for getting into the field, the BLS projects job growth of 5% nationally for police officers from 2018 to 2028, which is on the low side for such a typically stable occupation. However, this outlook depends heavily on city and state budgets, which can fluctuate. The low rate of growth will create stronger opportunities for police officer applicants who hold a bachelors degree in criminal justice or a related field.

The top 10 states for police and sheriff patrol officer earnings in 2018 were:

  • California: $104,790
  • New Jersey: 19,950
