A Career Built On Passion

What Happens at the Police Academy

Being a police officer is a tough job. You take on tremendous responsibility. It’s imperative that you fully understand all the ramifications. Our job is to prepare you for any scenario you could possibly encounter. For instance, in addition to rigorous mental and physical training, you will be pepper-sprayed. It’s not fun, but it’s part of the job. If you have to use this weapon on a fellow citizen in your community, you have to understand how it works.

Police officers love what they do. Helping communities stay safe is their passion. And we take pride in turning those passions into careers. Our training program places you on the path to becoming a police officer, deputy sheriff or other law enforcement professional. Along the way you will create friendships that will last a lifetime. The brother- and sister-hood in law enforcement transcends fields, borders and time. You and your classmates will build the foundation to become successful leaders in the profession for the rest of your careers.

The Minimum Isnt Going To Cut It

Every police force has similar minimal fitness requirements. However, dont think for one moment that the minimum represents any kind of benchmark.

Instructors will absolutely expect recruits to have surpassed those minimum requirements by the time they graduate, so youd be well advised to get fit and healthy long before your first day at the academy.

Cardio

For obvious reasons, the police love cardio drills.

Minimum requirements for running will be somewhere in the region of 1.5 miles in 11 to 14 minutes, depending upon the age and sex of the candidate.

For extra peace of mind, youre definitely going to want to make sure youre easily able to achieve those times, and it should also be noted that many police academies will have recruits running up to six miles by the end of their basic training.

Muscle Building

Police academy recruits will be doing a lot of push-ups on their first day at the police academy. This theme will continue through basic training, so its absolutely vital that you prepare long in advance so that youre not physically exhausted during more academic classes.

Just like like the cardio requirements, the amount of press-ups and sit-ups required as an absolute minimum varies by age and sex, but is usually within the range of 25-40 press-ups per minute and 30-45 sit ups per minute.

Private Education Loan Options

Private Education Loans are funded by banks and other private lending institutions. Students who need additional funds to pay educational costs and who have exhausted other funding resources, may consider borrowing private education loan. This option should be carefully considered.

Similar to home and car loans, lenders have flexibility in setting the interest rate, credit criteria that must be met, and repayment terms.

Lenders may require a co-signer. A co-signer signs the promissory note promising to repay the loan if you dont. After you enter repayment, some lenders offer a co-signer release. To determine your eligibility for a co-signer release the lender will require a specified number of on-time payments of principle and interest and will pull your credit score and history.

Interest rates are directly related to the credit rating of the borrower and/or co-signer, so choose a co-signer who has a good credit score.

The following loans are available to students enrolled in the Law Enforcement Training Academy.

  • This loan is available to students enrolled full-time, half-time, and less than half-time.

    About The Training Academy

Police Academy Taser & Pepper Spray

The Metro Police Training Academy has been developing elite police officers since 1970. Since that time, the Training Academy has graduated over 2,600 police officers, and boasts an Academy staff, which represents a multitude of areas of expertise. In addition to being one of the most respected police academies in the country, it is a CALEA accredited public safety training academy.

The primary role of the Training Division is the operation of the Police Training Academy where it serves as the foundation of the agency by providing students with the highest quality training and knowledge, to support the needs of the department and the community they serve. Theres A Lot To Take In

The first day at the academy will be over-whelming, thats unavoidable. Instructors will likely be intimidating right off the bat and start shouting orders at you as quick as an auctioneer. While this may lead to instant confusion, just remain calm. Dont take anything personally or let your emotions get the better of you. It is all a test. Think clearly and listen closely to what they ask of you and react to their commands.

    How Police Academies Work

If one thing separates police recruits from full-fledged officers, it’s pepper spray. On-duty officers keep a can handy in case of unruly criminals, but recruits in police academies have to stand still and a take a burning spritz in the face.

Pepper spray training is just one of the physically and mentally demanding exercises that thousands of men and women in police academies go through in pursuit of the blue uniform.

Before police academies were developed in the United States in the early 20th century, an officer’s training took place on the streets. Aside from following the law, police learned by trial and error from the different encounters they came across. Now, every police officer in the nation goes through a formalized certification course at a police academy.

Police academies are similar to basic training programs in the military. Recruits, people in training to become police officers, may live in dormitories for six to eight months, waking up at 5 a.m. and turning the lights out at 10 p.m. sharp. After a day of intense physical training and academic classes, they eat dinner and settle down for a few hours of studying before heading to bed.

Even in non-residential academies where recruits go home in the evenings, training is focused and regimented. After all, the basic program is an average of 720 course hours .
