Hey guys, Russell here. Prime Motion Training. Look, one of the questions that I get quite often from either younger applicants or older applicants is around their age and what their realistic chances might be of getting into the police force given their age.

00:16If we look at the younger age, to begin with, if youre 18, 19, chances are that youve recently left school and if that is the case, then the only real issue is likely to be satisfying the employment history criteria for Victoria Police, they expect you to be in full-time work and if youre just leaving school and maybe youve started a casual job, that lack of consistent ongoing work experience could become an issue. Thats really the only concern. I mean, everything else around, oh youre too young, you dont have enough life experience, etc. It may or may not be an issue.

01:38If we skip ahead to the old ducks, lets say about to turn 50, Im not sure where all duck starts and finishes, but look if you are, as a lot of people call it a mature age applicant, you bring so much more to the table in terms of life experience, generally than younger applicants and this maturity and youve probably experienced things that a younger person hasnt.

06:09So if youre an old duck, thats something that you might want to have close look at. But again, if none of those things is relevant to you and youre eligible to apply, go for it, is my advice.

Physical Requirements For Police

bbitdesign: Requirements To Become A Police Officer In Georgia

Many police departments require recruits to pass a physical fitness test. To ensure you pass the test, begin training early, focusing on running, stairs and strength exercises. Most departments will also look at your physical health and will want you to have good vision, hearing, cardiovascular health and a healthy weight-height ratio. You may want to have your hearing and vision checked before applying, and start dieting to manage your weight.

Many police departments are making adjustments in their physical requirements to allow for older candidates. For example, in Los Angeles recruits are allowed to carry 2 percent more body weight than previously and in Juneau, Alaska the number of required situps in one minute has been reduced to 15 from 30.

What Law Enforcement Can Learn From The Military

I spent 22 years in the USAF Security Forces. Airmen at 18 carry weapons and are entrusted with the security of nuclear weapons one day, conducting law enforcement activities the next and deployed to a war zone the next. One thing I found over the years is that age and book smarts do not guarantee youll be a good officer. Setting an age limit that substantially reduces your pool of potential applicants is counterproductive. John C. Brocker

I do think that 21 is reasonable. We send 18-year-olds to war equipped with significant firepower, but they are normally closely supervised by NCOs who are older and more experienced. In law enforcement, there is far less direct supervision, widely varying situations but extreme scrutiny after the fact. A few more years to mellow a bit and experience life seems prudent for law enforcement, but 25 years of age seems extreme. J. Filice

If I can serve my country in the military at 18 the same rule should apply to serving my country domestically. Science does show that cognitively individuals are still developing until their mid- to late-20s, however, age does not factor in lived experiences that influence the ability to process or connect with others during traumatic experiences. Those prior life experiences can lend more credence for the officer supporting their community and increased empathy. These should ALL be factors taken into consideration when choosing the proper application, not solely based on age. Angela Matthews

Am I too old to be a police officer?

Can FBI have beards? Most law enforcement agencies require those employees who engage with the public to be presentable, and to maintain a professional, businesslike appearance. That usually means relatively short hair for men, and if facial hair is allowed at all, it has to be kept very neatly trimmed.

Not all police departments have maximum age requirements.

Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds

No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. But many of our officers have backgrounds and interests not at all related to law enforcement and have decided to go into policing as a second or third career.

Everyone Has Strengths And Weaknesses

I was an LEO when women were first getting hired. I started the academy at 29 and was the second oldest person in my class. My roommate in the dorm was 19 she could run like a deer, jump over the 8 wall like it was a bump on the road, and generally made me feel old. My saving grace was that I had a BA in criminology and had worked as a county investigator. I held classes in our TV room on the law and evidence. We each have our strong and weak suits. His wife, Veronica, only learned of his desire to become a police officer when their daughter joined a police academy magnet program several years ago.

It was a shock, and he couldnt have done it before because he wasnt a citizen, Veronica Camarena said. When he became a citizen, that actual day he started finding out about .

Now that he has attained his dream of joining law enforcement, Camarena told ABC7 hes ready to help his community.

I also want to be a motivation for my kids, and for Hispanic people as well, to let them know youre never too old to pursue your dreams.
