What Is The Minimum Maximum Age Requirement To Become A Police Officer

How old is too old to be a police officer?

Each state sets their own requirements on what the minimum age will be for becoming a police officer and if there will be a maximum age and if so what that will be. Individual agencies may then set their own policies for minimum and maximum age requirements which fall within the limits of the state requirements but may be more restrictive.

The minimum age requirement could be anywhere between 18-21 years of age. Some departments will have a minimum age requirement for applying such as 20, with the requirement that you be 21 when you are sworn in.

The maximum age requirement applies to those applying for new positions with that agency. Often, the maximum age requirement is based upon the amount of time it would take to retire with full benefits and still retire on time. Say for example the mandatory retirement age is 57 for a department, so for a police officer to retire with 20 years a new officer must start with that department by age 37. Therefore, the maximum age requirement is 37 years old.

Some departments do not have maximum age requirements. Generally the minimum and maximum age requirements are posted on the vacancy announcement. Some exceptions to maximum age requirements are available for those with military service. This exception applies to certain federal law enforcement positions.

Previous Drug Use Criteria

  • Drug use will be viewed in the context of the applicant’s age at the time of use, type of drug, how recently it was used, and the frequency of use. No illegal drug use will be allowed within 12 months of the date of application. No marijuana use within 6 months of application.
  • No sale of any drugs.
  • Could have permanent disqualification for use of heroin, LSD, PCP, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine or similar substances.
  • Any prior drug use, admitted or discovered, will be evaluated in determining employment eligibility.
  • No pattern of abuse of legal or legend drugs .
  • Must pass polygraph or CVSA concerning use.

The average police academy program lasts about six months, but this can vary widely depending on the department and the state. Some programs may last as little as 12 weeks, while others may last up to two years. The length of the program is usually determined by the amount of training required by the state.

The police academys curriculum consists of both physical and educational modules. It is unclear whether there is a national curriculum for police academies in the United States. Basic training academy duration varies depending on the agency type and location. An average of 833 hours are required to complete a course in the United States, which takes approximately five months. Training academies use strategies as part of their curriculum. Furthermore, you will learn how to use nonlethal weapons such as stun guns and batons. Your mental preparation is critical because you are entering a potentially dangerous situation.

The academy emphasizes the best aspects of each member of the group over the individuals needs. Many academies include a combination of stress and non-stress training. Close combat and defensive tactics are part of the academy curriculum. As part of some programs, such as the Basic Police Academy of the State of California, a physical agility test is required.

The law sets police officer age requirements by state. Each of the 50 states has its own rule for how young or old police can be, Go Law Enforcement says. It’s 21 in most states, but in Montana it’s 18, for Florida 19 and it’s 20 in California. The goal is to recruit officers when they’re mature enough to exercise good judgment.

Although the image associated with rookie cops is typically young, most police departments do not have a maximum age limit. For those that do, it’s not necessarily physical ability that’s the big issue. Instead, they want to ensure that you’ll be able to work long enough to retire with full pension benefits, something easier to do at 30 than 55.

New York State says, for instance, that state troopers must be under 30 by the deadline for submitting the application. As the state is keen to hire military veterans, each year of military service pushes the age limit up one year. The maximum age limit for police, if you’re a veteran, is 37.

Federal and many state laws prohibit hiring, promoting and firing based on age. The Chief says that in 1996, Congress amended federal age-discrimination law to allow a maximum age limit for police and firefighters. States and police departments can therefore set age limits, provided they’re based on valid job-performance requirements.
