Hey guys, Russell here. Prime Motion Training. Look, one of the questions that I get quite often from either younger applicants or older applicants is around their age and what their realistic chances might be of getting into the police force given their age.

00:16If we look at the younger age, to begin with, if youre 18, 19, chances are that youve recently left school and if that is the case, then the only real issue is likely to be satisfying the employment history criteria for Victoria Police, they expect you to be in full-time work and if youre just leaving school and maybe youve started a casual job, that lack of consistent ongoing work experience could become an issue. Thats really the only concern. I mean, everything else around, oh youre too young, you dont have enough life experience, etc. It may or may not be an issue.

01:38If we skip ahead to the old ducks, lets say about to turn 50, Im not sure where all duck starts and finishes, but look if you are, as a lot of people call it a mature age applicant, you bring so much more to the table in terms of life experience, generally than younger applicants and this maturity and youve probably experienced things that a younger person hasnt.

06:09So if youre an old duck, thats something that you might want to have close look at. But again, if none of those things is relevant to you and youre eligible to apply, go for it, is my advice.

Kind regards,

How Old Is Too Old To Become A Cop

You must be under 30 years old at the time you apply to the NYSP, and under 36 years old at the time you’re appointed. The NYSP allows an additional six years for military veterans, both for the application age and the appointment age, so it’s possible for you to be as old as 42 when you’re hired.

Most federal law enforcement agencies have a maximum age of 37 at appointment, but they, too, waive the age limit for qualified military veterans and members already working within the federal system.

What Is The Maximum Age To Become An Officer In The Military

He

The maximum age for a commission is age 35. It is because a military officer must be able to have 20 years of service, to be retirement eligible for the maximum retirement age of 55.

There are a few exceptions: Military medical officers and chaplains can be commissioned up to the age of 47 with waivers into their 50s . Depending upon the need for doctors, psychologists, chaplains , and legal officers as well, the maximum age can be waived.

Those with prior enlisted service can receive waivers . Of course, there are exceptions to every rule as many senior officers serve well past the age 55 with 30 plus years of service. But typically with NO prior military service that age is 35 years old.

Aviators have different age requirements, which are specific to the service.

The typical route to joining the military as an older officer after college is though Officer Candidates School as the route through ROTC or the Service Academies have younger age limits. All the branches have their individual officer training programs:

Potential Disqualifiers For A Policing Career In Canada

When preparing yourself for a policing career, you need to be aware of what will disqualify you from the police application process. As far as the written, physical, and medical exams, the requirements are fairly consistent across all agencies.

Language Disqualifier: You need to be fluent in either English or French including being able to speak, read, and understand one of these languages.

Physical Disqualifier: You cannot be in poor physical condition. Failure to successfully complete the physical examination in the minimum time frame is an automatic disqualification.

Test particulars can vary from one police agency to the next. However, all tests simulate critical incidents that police officers are exposed to. For example. the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation , used by the RCMP, consists of three sections:

  • Running 6 laps around a 350-meter obstacle course where you are required to climb stairs and jump over hurdles
  • Pushing and pulling a 70lb weight
  • Carrying 80lbs over a 15-meter distance.
  • Psychological Disqualifiers: A candidate can be disqualified if they do not meet the minimum psychological examination requirements.

Work Environment Disqualifiers: Police departments require you to work shift work which includes nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as policing takes place 24 hours per day. If you are unwilling to accommodate this type of work schedule, you will be disqualified from the process.

You’re Only As Old As You Feel

How Old Can You be to Become a Police Officer?

You might be surprised by the answers you get if you ask different law enforcement officers about their backgrounds and what they did before they became police officers. Different people with different backgrounds join the force, and you’ll learn that they found their way to this profession at different stages of life…some of them later than others.

Not all police departments have maximum age requirements.

    Other Requirements For Police Officers

Many police departments require recruits to live in the jurisdiction. While some departments allow new hires time to move to the area, others require residency at the time of application. Also, many departments require police officers to have completed some college credits. If you didnt attend college, upgrade your education or select a jurisdiction that only requires a GED equivalency. Some departments waive education requirements if you served in the military or will consider your previous work experience.

Age Has Less Relevance Than You Think

When you apply to be part of the police force, most departments will look at other factors first, before your age. How physically capable you are is much more important as they want to make sure you can adequately perform the tasks required. If you have good fitness and can prove that youre capable of physically exerting yourself than age will likely be overlooked. Part of being in law enforcement means you need to be in great shape so you can keep up with anything that gets thrown at you while on duty.

Firstly, its a good idea to have a look at the areas/jurisdictions youd like to be employed in. Do a bit of research to ensure they dont have a maximum age limit prior to making an application. A few of the larger police forces, like the NYSP have some restrictions on age and so does the federal government. But the US has a ton of police forces across the country and you will definitely be able to locate one near you that will employ officers regardless of age. As long as you fit the rest of the specifications than you shouldnt have too many issues getting accepted.

The Application Process For Police Officer Candidates

    Peter Marrinan, Springfield

It isnt easy becoming a police officer. Potential candidates need to go through a stringent application process designed to weed out those who dont have what it takes to become outstanding police officers.

Police officers help maintain peace and order and ensure that members of the community stay safe. This job comes with immense responsibility. The application process itself is not for everyone.

Canadian police agencies generally follow the same process which involves a series of tests, checks and interviews, including:

    • A written exam
    • A polygraph exam
    • A background investigation

Some of these tests require detailed paperwork but minimal preparation. For some tests, like the physical tests, you would be best prepared if you did a fitness training program, prior to, depending on your fitness level. Other tests, like the polygraph exam, require no preparation at all.

Applicants can be declined at any point in the stages listed above and even if a candidate passes every stage, an offer of employment is not guaranteed.

Once you have completed all assessments, your entire application package is reviewed and measured against other applicants to determine the most suitable candidates for the role as a police officer.

If you are recruited, you can expect a conditional offer of employment that allows you to advance to the final step before you become a police officer: cadet training.

  • Part-time work experience in a customer service environment provides exposure to people from all walks of life and develops communication, teamwork and conflict resolution skills, eg. working at McDonald’s
  • Volunteer experience develops community mindedness and communication skills e.g. working at the local surf lifesaving club or community centre
  • Sporting club experience develops teamwork, communication and leadership skills and a healthy level of fitness which is required for the job
  • Overseas travel exposure to other cultures, religions, languages and fosters independence and assertiveness
  • If you are intending on applying once reaching the age of 18 having attained your high school VCE or VCAL, we strongly recommend that you seek to increase your customer service paid work to full time hours while going through the recruitment process.

Meet The Oldest Law Enforcement Officer? In The World

The law sets police officer age requirements by state. Each of the 50 states has its own rule for how young or old police can be, Go Law Enforcement says. It’s 21 in most states, but in Montana it’s 18, for Florida 19 and it’s 20 in California. The goal is to recruit officers when they’re mature enough to exercise good judgment.

Although the image associated with rookie cops is typically young, most police departments do not have a maximum age limit. For those that do, it’s not necessarily physical ability that’s the big issue. Instead, they want to ensure that you’ll be able to work long enough to retire with full pension benefits, something easier to do at 30 than 55.

New York State says, for instance, that state troopers must be under 30 by the deadline for submitting the application. As the state is keen to hire military veterans, each year of military service pushes the age limit up one year. The maximum age limit for police, if you’re a veteran, is 37.

Federal and many state laws prohibit hiring, promoting and firing based on age. The Chief says that in 1996, Congress amended federal age-discrimination law to allow a maximum age limit for police and firefighters. States and police departments can therefore set age limits, provided they’re based on valid job-performance requirements.

Police Officer Age Limit Am I Too Old To Be A Cop

Many people think you need to be fresh out of school to get hired as a police officer, but this isnt the case. If youre considering a second career as an officer than you might just be in luck.

If you chat with police officers about their employment history, chances are the majority didnt start out in law enforcement. You will find that many officers come from backgrounds in other industries and in various professions. All types of people take up careers in law enforcement and they do so at varying ages. The stereotype thats been created is not always true, so you are likely to still be able to take up your dream career in law enforcement.

While some law enforcement sectors do have certain rules around your age, many will accept applications from you even if youre older.

What Law Enforcement Can Learn From The Military

I spent 22 years in the USAF Security Forces. Airmen at 18 carry weapons and are entrusted with the security of nuclear weapons one day, conducting law enforcement activities the next and deployed to a war zone the next. One thing I found over the years is that age and book smarts do not guarantee youll be a good officer. Setting an age limit that substantially reduces your pool of potential applicants is counterproductive. John C. Brocker

I do think that 21 is reasonable. We send 18-year-olds to war equipped with significant firepower, but they are normally closely supervised by NCOs who are older and more experienced. In law enforcement, there is far less direct supervision, widely varying situations but extreme scrutiny after the fact. A few more years to mellow a bit and experience life seems prudent for law enforcement, but 25 years of age seems extreme. J. Filice

If I can serve my country in the military at 18 the same rule should apply to serving my country domestically. Science does show that cognitively individuals are still developing until their mid- to late-20s, however, age does not factor in lived experiences that influence the ability to process or connect with others during traumatic experiences. Those prior life experiences can lend more credence for the officer supporting their community and increased empathy. These should ALL be factors taken into consideration when choosing the proper application, not solely based on age. Angela Matthews
