Andy Griffith Show reruns. Kojak on prime time. Columbo. Starsky & Hutch. Once upon a time, you could turn on the TV and find that the cops were almost always good guys. Crockett and Tubbs occasionally discovered that an officer was involved with the drug trade, but the Miami Vice duo stayed above the fray and took the bad guys down. In those days, politicians scored points by vocally supporting police and departmental budgets, never by vocally undercutting them. While my favorite TV shows suggested that some bad actors got into the profession for the wrong reasons, I want to be a police officer when I grow up was a common childhood refrain.
But in recent years, a spate of high-profile use-of-force incidents have tarnished the profession. Many in the media and political circles piled on.
Such negativity is hurting police recruitment and retention. Thats among the findings of a new Utah Foundation report, To Protect and Serve: Meeting Law Enforcement Recruiting and Retention Challenges in Utah.
Negative perceptions hurt retention too. In a 2021 survey, more than half of Utah law enforcement officers were considering leaving their jobs. Among those thinking of leaving the public sector altogether, a lack of support from elected officials and the community, along with negative media portrayals, were driving forces.
What Do You Do If A Police Officer Is Harassing You
It is unlawful for a police officer to harass an individual, whether they a suspect or citizen.
The Police Misconduct Provision makes it unlawful for State or local law enforcement officers to engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that deprives persons of rights protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States . Therefore, this law gives victims of police harassment the right to take legal action against the officer and/or the department they work for. What do we mean by take legal action? Well, the DOJ accepts complaints stemming from harassment and given they can prove the allegations made are valid, the DOJ may file suit in an effort to recognize a department for the illegal behavior that is being displayed by its officers.
Now, you need to understand that in order for the DOJ to file suit, the misconduct must constitute a pattern or practice it may not simply be an isolated incident. In order for the lawsuit to stand, the DOJ must be able to show in court that the agency has an unlawful policy or that the incidents constituted a pattern of unlawful conduct. If the violation involves discrimination, such as discriminatory harassment, the DOJ does not have to show that discrimination has occurred in order to prove a pattern or practice of misconduct.

Acting Quickly The Mumbai Police On Thursday Arrested Two People For Harassing A South Korean Woman During A Livestream In The Khar Area Of Mumbai

South Korean YouTuber Hyojeong Park, who was harassed in Mumbai while live streaming, praised Mumbai police for their quick action and for arresting the two accused youths. In an exclusive conversation with Republic, she also stated how the events unfolded.
Opening up on the incident, Park said, “My job is of the live streamer. I travel to countries and do live streams to show the travel and new culture to other people. On that day, I was doing live streaming and heading back to hotel. There were two guys on the street. One yelled at me ‘I love you’. That things happen quite often when you are filming because people want to engage and are interested in what you are doing. I just keep heading to my hotel and said ‘Oh yeah, I love you back’.”
She stated that one person put his arm on her shoulder and tried to kiss her. “I was very startled. He grabbed my waist and dragged me to his motorcycle where his friends were also standing and said they will give me a ride home. I was very uncomfortable and did not want them to know my hotel. Then, he again put his arm on my should and tried to kiss me for the second time. I did not know what to do and tried not to escalate situation because I was alone and there were two guys. I started to walk very fast to my hotel and they followed me. They asked me for my phone number. The best thing I could do was to give a fake number,” she recalled.
What Is Police Harassment
Law enforcement agents are hired to serve the public. It is their duty to enforce the law, but that does not give them the authority to act lawlessly. They must also abide by the regulations outlined by the government and accord people certain rights. When officers act contrary to law and abuse their power, they are often guilty of police harassment.
There are numerous actions that can qualify as police harassment. Police have the authority and the duty to question people suspected of committing crimes. They also have the authority and duty to lawfully look for evidence regarding crimes and to arrest those they believe have committed crimes. There are some types of questioning, searches, and arrests, however, which may be considered harassment.
Questioning may qualify as harassment when it is arbitrary. Sometimes police officers will make a habit of stopping a certain person and demanding answers to random events, even when they do not suspect his involvement. This is often an abuse of power. The same type of situation can arise with search and seizure. An officer may act unlawfully by conducting an unwarranted search and confiscating items not used as part of an investigation.
