Do Most Of Your Officers Come From Similar Backgrounds

No, the backgrounds of our officers are varied and diverse. Some of our officers have decided to proudly continue a family tradition of service. Others knew they wanted to be police officers ever since they can remember and come to the department with college degrees in Criminal Justice, although this is not required. Others have a prior military background, or have transferred to the department as a lateral hire from another agency. Still others are attracted to this career through their interactions with police officers in social work or law careers. What Is The Minimum Maximum Age Requirement To Become A Police Officer

Each state sets their own requirements on what the minimum age will be for becoming a police officer and if there will be a maximum age and if so what that will be. Individual agencies may then set their own policies for minimum and maximum age requirements which fall within the limits of the state requirements but may be more restrictive.

The minimum age requirement could be anywhere between 18-21 years of age. Some departments will have a minimum age requirement for applying such as 20, with the requirement that you be 21 when you are sworn in.

The maximum age requirement applies to those applying for new positions with that agency. Often, the maximum age requirement is based upon the amount of time it would take to retire with full benefits and still retire on time. Say for example the mandatory retirement age is 57 for a department, so for a police officer to retire with 20 years a new officer must start with that department by age 37. Therefore, the maximum age requirement is 37 years old.

Some departments do not have maximum age requirements. Generally the minimum and maximum age requirements are posted on the vacancy announcement. Some exceptions to maximum age requirements are available for those with military service. This exception applies to certain federal law enforcement positions.

Age Has Less Relevance Than You Think

What Army Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

When you apply to be part of the police force, most departments will look at other factors first, before your age. How physically capable you are is much more important as they want to make sure you can adequately perform the tasks required. If you have good fitness and can prove that youre capable of physically exerting yourself than age will likely be overlooked. Part of being in law enforcement means you need to be in great shape so you can keep up with anything that gets thrown at you while on duty.

Firstly, its a good idea to have a look at the areas/jurisdictions youd like to be employed in. Do a bit of research to ensure they dont have a maximum age limit prior to making an application. A few of the larger police forces, like the NYSP have some restrictions on age and so does the federal government. But the US has a ton of police forces across the country and you will definitely be able to locate one near you that will employ officers regardless of age. As long as you fit the rest of the specifications than you shouldnt have too many issues getting accepted.

Hey guys, Russell here. Prime Motion Training. Look, one of the questions that I get quite often from either younger applicants or older applicants is around their age and what their realistic chances might be of getting into the police force given their age.

00:16If we look at the younger age, to begin with, if youre 18, 19, chances are that youve recently left school and if that is the case, then the only real issue is likely to be satisfying the employment history criteria for Victoria Police, they expect you to be in full-time work and if youre just leaving school and maybe youve started a casual job, that lack of consistent ongoing work experience could become an issue. Thats really the only concern. I mean, everything else around, oh youre too young, you dont have enough life experience, etc. It may or may not be an issue.

01:38If we skip ahead to the old ducks, lets say about to turn 50, Im not sure where all duck starts and finishes, but look if you are, as a lot of people call it a mature age applicant, you bring so much more to the table in terms of life experience, generally than younger applicants and this maturity and youve probably experienced things that a younger person hasnt.

06:09So if youre an old duck, thats something that you might want to have close look at. But again, if none of those things is relevant to you and youre eligible to apply, go for it, is my advice.

Maximum Age To Become A Police Officer

Many departments don’t have a maximum age after which a prospect will no longer be able to apply. For example, the San Diego Police Department and according to the Department of Police Service in the City of New Haven, this agency doesnt have an upper age limit. Just as many departments do have rules about the maximum age for new applications to begin their training and to be hired, however.

In New York City, prospects must take the initial exam before their 35th birthday, while the Fort Worth Police Department will let candidates take the exam up to age 44. Applicants should not assume that if they’re older than 30 they’re ineligible to become a police officer, but they should carefully investigate the requirements in their area.
