Is the NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy effective?

The NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy is one of several innovative, effective programs that the Department provides for young people in New York City.

Is The Police Academy Harder Than Basic Training

The short answer to this question is that it depends. This comparison largely depends on the academy youre looking at. Most police academies are known to be more difficult than basic training, but it can depend on where you study.

Basic training teaches the core skills and knowledge to succeed in a military environment. It requires hard work and determination.

Basic military training courses include:

  • Basic military skills

Additionally, a large part of the military course is spent on fitness training.

Basic military training is a 10-week program that includes class time, field time, and physical training. With the majority of the time being spent on classwork. Basic training requires a commitment to 17-hour days, and there are no guaranteed days off during the 10-week program.

No Two Officers Are Alike

There is no one size fits all description for what a cop should look or be like. As officers deal with so many different types of people it only makes sense that the force should also be made up of different types of people. Each police force should, in some way, mirror the people they are assigned to keep safe. Communities of different races, social and financial standings etc. should be handled by appropriate and experienced types of officers.

One cop cannot do it all alone. Communities are best served by a police force that can function together as a team with each officer bringing something unique to the table. This creates a well-rounded force that can protect their jurisdiction most effectively. Including many officers of different ages and experiences will benefit the police force as a whole.

How Long Does The Recruitment Process Take

Recruitment times can vary by force so its worth checking when you apply what the expected timelines may be. In many instances it will take around 4-6 months, but it may be less or more than that depending upon the volume of candidates at any given time and how individuals progress through the various stages.

Hateful Social Media Presence

Police Academy

Social Media accounts are often treated very casually, and people share stuff on their handles without realizing the outcomes of this practice. Social media accounts are considered the reflection of an individuals personality, and the information shared on these handles is considered to reflect an individuals thoughts. The same goes for law enforcement agencies. The law enforcement agencies also verify the social media accounts of the individuals, and the shared posts are monitored to examine the behavior of individuals.

The Social media posts shared years ago are also monitored, and the individuals with hateful mindsets are permanently disqualified from the police academy. The shortlisted candidates for the interview are being monitored through social media posts. If the posts are casual and do not reflect hateful mindsets, the candidates are interviewed and shortlisted. Else the candidates will be disqualified for possessing a hateful mindset.

What Are The Minimum Requirements

Heres a look at the minimum requirements to become a police officer in California. Keep in mind that the majority of police departments in the state follow POST requirements. You can find the agencies that dont here their requirements may vary, but are likely to be similar to the below:

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must be a citizen of the US through either naturalization or birth.
  • You must have attained either your high school diploma or GED. Some agencies may require a 4-year degree or an associates degree.
  • You must have a valid drivers license.
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors that prohibit ownership, possession or control of a firearm.

Background Check Of The Cadets

The police academies also conduct a background check for the new entrants this is done to ensure that the candidates in police organizations have moral, ethical, and legal rights to carry a weapon and police badge. What if the police hire a candidate with a criminal background? Would he/she perform the duties effectively and ensure that law and order are prevailing? In my perspective, it is a big no, and an individual with a criminal background can never perform the duties effectively.

The police academies conduct a thorough background check for all the new entrants into the academy for these reasons. This background check includes a driving record check and a criminal record check. A significant felony or involvement in a criminal activity might lead to permanent disqualification therefore, if you aspire to become a part of the police academy, you need to be very careful about your activities that might lead to bad history.

When you apply for the police academy, your background check starts, and the people monitor your activities without you even knowing it. The police organization wants candidates who are disciplined, thorough, and responsible so that they can effectively perform the police tasks.

What If You Fail The Background Check

FORT THOMAS MATTERS: Become A Part of the Citizens Police Academy of ...

There are cases when you do not get the dream job of a police officer only because you fail the background check. And this is not because you have any of the major disqualifiers as listed above but due to some minor inconsistencies. You are left wondering why this has happened and does it mean that you have no chance to become a police officer at all. Do not expect, however, the agency to give you any feedback or reasons why. The reason for this most probably is due to the fact that they were candidates who were at least on the same level as you in respect to the other elements of the hiring process but didnt have those minor issues. Let say that your background check revealed you had 1 speeding ticket when you were at the age of 19 or you were released from your previous job because you failed to meet your target. These issues are not that serious but still they put you behind a candidate with a completely clean record. What you need to do is continue checking the job openings and applying for the position you want. It is possible that you can be the better candidate for another department.

It is important to note down, however, that if you have failed the police background check because of any of the major disqualifiers as described above, you may not stand a chance to become a police officer. In this case it is better to stop pursuing career in law enforcement and direct your interests and efforts to another field.

Police Academy Training Requirements

Police academy training is both mentally and physically rigorous. Police academies dont like dropouts so the police academy requirements for physical and mental health are strict. A physical exam is required to enter as well as graduate from any police academy. The initial physical exam evaluates overall health and fitness, whereas the final physical exam evaluates competencies in areas such as: endurance, agility, and knowledge of police skills. An estimated two-thirds of recruits cannot pass the final physical exam upon entering the academy . Daily physical training is highly recommended, check out this article on police academy training.

In the life of a police officer, academic knowledge is just as important as physical ability. Police academy recruits are required to take a written and oral exam. This exam covers topics such as law, ethics, and law enforcement rules and regulations. In states with larger immigrant populations, the learning of a second language is also required.

Incorrect False Or Incomplete Information Given On The Application Form

Candidate must mention the correct details and be as honest and forthcoming as possible. False or incomplete information gives rise to red flags that agencies cannot ignore. It will automatically mean that you are hiding something. Honesty and integrity are the two fundamental principles of the law enforcement agencies, so they keep an eye on applicants through this process. If anything fishy is caught, you can most likely get disqualified.

Some other disqualifiers can be tattoos, depending on the type and how visible they are. It is always better to ask the department you are applying for or a friend who has applied or work in the agency.

The rules mentioned above are almost similar for LAPD and NYPD and many other agencies present in the United States of America.

The details as mentioned earlier and criteria will help you in understanding whether you are eligible for applying to a law enforcement agency or not. In conclusion, it is essential to know that background investigations are an integral part of hiring. It is recommended not to hide past mistakes and run from but be open about it on the contrary there is still a chance that the evaluation is in your favour. However, if you think you have committed serious crimes, and there is no chance of getting through the process, it is better to look for another line of work and not lose hope.

Maximum Age Requirements For Law Enforcement Candidates

It may come as a surprise that most agencies do not a maximum age requirement for their candidates. It is also interesting that the reason some agencies have a maximum age limit does not have to do with a candidates ability to pass the physical ability test but rather they want to make certain that a newly hired candidate can retire with full benefits. An agency may have a maximum age for someone starting out because that is the latest someone could start with their agency and still retire with full benefits when they reach the threshold for mandatory retirement in that agency.

For states that do have a maximum age limit, the age at which you can start your law enforcement career, It is generally around 34-37 years of age.

Exceptions are made for military veterans. In the New York Police Department, for example, the maximum age to sit the initial exam is 35. If you have had active military service, you can deduct six years from that age or in other words you can apply for the job at the age of 41.
