Toronto Police Officer Application Process
The process outlined below belongs to the Toronto Police Service. Most police agencies in Ontario follow a similar process.
Applicants can be declined at any stage in the application process. The most suitable candidates in the application pool are selected amongst those who pass every stage.

Which Are The Common Disqualifiers
There are certain events or elements of your past that could serve as automatic disqualifiers. Any felony conviction, including deferred adjudication, less-than-honorable discharge from the military, criminal activity, drug abuse and history of drug addiction and gang membership fall into this category. If you have history of drunk driving, excessive traffic citations or misdemeanor, you may also not qualify for becoming a police officer.
Something more innocent such as tattoos may be an issue with certain agencies. Even though nowadays most police departments accept officers with tattoos, there still might be some restrictions. You might be required to wear long sleeves all year around in order to hide them and as a rule there should be no tattoos on the face or neck and they cannot be vulgar or racist. Some departments have stricter rules than others, so if it is not explicitly mentioned in the job announcement it is worthy checking it out before starting the application process.
Police Officer Application Process
General Minimum Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship Only United States citizens will receive consideration. Qualified applicants will be required to provide proof of citizenship early in the selection process.
Age Requirements Must be 21 years old but not older than 39 years old at the time of appointment .
Education Must possess a high school diploma or General Education Diploma .
Motor Vehicle License Must possess, provide, and have maintained a valid United States, state issued drivers license , and show evidence of at least three years of responsible driving experience. Must demonstrate routine driving experience within the most recent three year period.
Selective Service Must be registered with the Selective Service System or exempt from the Selective Service System registration as a female or due to age or military status. Those with military service must provide documentation of an honorable discharge.
Background Investigation Must complete a full background investigation.

The minimum qualifications listed above determine an individuals basic eligibility for employment with the United States Capitol Police . Please note, the application process can be lengthy. Depending on a persons specific circumstances, the process can take as little as a few months to more than a year.

There was a time when becoming a police officer was as simple as graduating high school or earning your GED, then attending a short training academy before diving into on-the-job training. And though those opportunities do still exist, especially in smaller departments, most departments have raised their standards of education to at least two years of post-secondary work. This means pursing an associate degree in law enforcement or a related field, such as criminal justice, criminology, or police science should be the first option to consider. The associate degree can then serve as a stepping stone to the bachelors degree, which then leads to graduate degree options.
However, other routes to the profession do exist. In addition to the on-the-job training after completing academy training, there is also the military option. Those who work as military police or in a similar capacity while serving their country can be perfectly suited to move into a police force after their military time is up. CAMP is designed to prepare police officer recruit candidates for the physical and mental rigors of the police academy. Designed by police academy core trainers, CAMP participants will be exposed to strenuous exercise and close-order drill. SDPD Recruiters will induce stress upon the participants, while fostering an environment of teamwork and excellence. CAMP participants form strong bonds with each other, which is vital for academy success.
CAMP is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm, and the first and last Saturday of the month at 7am.

How long is the Police Academy training program?The police academy is a six-month college course. Two-thirds of the Academy is academics, and one-third of the Academy is physical training.
Is the academy a live-in, high stress environment?Academy hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with recruits going home at the end of each day. It is not structured as a high-stress academy. Teamwork is highly encouraged.
How much running is required in the academy?Recruits will be required to run at least 3 1/2 miles each day at the start of the academy. By the end of academy training, recruits will be running up to 7 miles a day several times a week.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer In Toronto
It takes 24 weeks to complete the prescribed police training and become sworn in as a 4th class constable. As cadets-in-training, new recruits attend a three-week orientation at the Toronto Police College followed by a 12-week session at the Ontario Police College. Training concludes with nine weeks of training at the Toronto Police College.

To register to take the civil service exam to become a police officer, you need to create an account online. The states website has more information about the Civil Service exam.
The fee for the exam is $100. You can pay on the states website with a credit or debit card.
