Becoming A Criminal Investigator With The Idaho State Police

The first step to becoming a detective with the Idaho State Police is to become a state trooper. Troopers are eligible for promotion to become a detective.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A college education at the bachelors level is the standard qualification for those without prior work experience. This can be in any field, but criminal justice, law enforcement, crime scene investigations and forensic science are particularly good majors for prospective detectives.

Applicants without a college degree can qualify with at least two years of responsible work experience.

General qualifications include:

Possessing a valid drivers license
Having a high school diploma or GED
Fingerprint clearance by the state of Idaho and the FBI

Disqualifiers:

Misdemeanor within five years of the application date

Having been decertified as a peace officer

Having any of the following military discharges:

OTH: Administrative discharge of other than honorable

DD: Dishonorable discharge

Not meeting the requirements of the drug policy of the Idaho State Police

Having been fired with just cause for any of the following:

Committing any form of illegal harassment

Drug or alcohol use that negatively affected job performance

Falsification of time reporting

Misuse of department or company finances

When Did Bryan Kohberger Become A Suspect

The Moscow Police Department released few details during the investigation but court documents show they began looking for a white sedan seen near the home at the time of the killings by late November.

They asked regional law enforcement to join the search, and on Nov. 28 officers at Washington State University identified Kohberger’s white Hyundai Elantra, looked up his name and noted he had switched his car registration from Pennsylvania to Washington state five days after the deaths.

It’s not exactly clear when the WSU officers relayed that information to the Moscow Police Department, which asked the public for help finding the white Hyundai Elantra in early December.

According to the court affidavit, at some point investigators looked at Kohberger’s history, and saw he had given a deputy a cell phone number during a traffic stop in August. Using the surveillance footage and cell phone data, they sketched out a possible travel route the night of the killings.

Kohberger’s phone was turned off or on airplane mode around the time of the killings, police wrote in the affidavit, but the data right before it was turned off suggested he was heading in the direction of the home and the data after it was turned back on suggested he was heading away from the home.

A knife sheath was found at the home after the killings, and police believed it belonged to the attacker. A small amount of DNA was found on it that did not belong to the victims.

How Long Is The Training Process For Officers

LATERAL-ENTRY All officers will attend the Boise Police Academy. The Lateral officers will do a modified academy. While attending the academy, you will also learn Boise Municipal Laws, policies, procedures, and services specific to Boise. This will be followed by Field Training for Lateral Officers. All certified law enforcement officers from outside of the State of Idaho must take and pass the Police Officer Equivalency test administered by the Idaho State Peace Officers Standards and Training. Recruits are NOT housed at the academy and will be responsible for their own housing.

ENTRY-LEVEL Will attend the Boise Police Academy where you will learn all the skills and knowledge specific to Law Enforcement and the Laws of the State of Idaho and the laws specific to the City of Boise, department policy and procedures and services specific to Boise. After completing advanced training, you will enter the Field Training Program, with an experienced officer who will evaluate your performance in the patrol division. Recruits are NOT housed at the academy and will be responsible for their own housing.

Minimum Requirements To Be A Police Officer In Idaho

Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must have graduated from an accredited high school or have a G.E.D.
Must be a minimum of twenty-one years of age.
No past criminal history and no convictions of DUI or suspended drivers license within the two years prior to application.

What Are The Work Hours Of A Patrol Officer

Patrol Officers work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Patrol officers work on a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays, and officers are assigned to one of three watches:
