Academy And Field Training
All Non-Certified Police Officer applicants must attend and graduate from the Broward College Institute of Public Safety Law Enforcement Academy. Recruits are required to perform classroom academics, physical training and skills proficiency while attending the police academy. The Law Enforcement Academy, Basic Recruit Training program is a 22-week program that provides training to prepare a student for the physical and mental demands of a career as a Florida police officer. Training and classes take place Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Graduates will be placed into a 16-week Field Training Program before being assigned to patrol.
Certified Police Applicants qualify for an abbreviated Field Training Program depending on their progress in the program, which can be as short as eight weeks.

Miami Police Officer Requirements
In order to become a Miami cop, there are a number of requirements to fulfill. At the time of hire, all Miami police applicants must:
- Be a US citizen
- Be at least 19 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid Florida Class E drivers license
- Have 20/50 vision in each eye separately and without corrective methods or have corrected vision to 20/30
- Not be colorblind
- Not have any felony convictions or convictions for disqualifying misdemeanors

Equivalency Of Training Process
This process is intended for out-of-state officers, federal or military officers, and previously certified Florida officers with a four-year or more break in service pursuant to section 943.131. An officer cannot have more than an 8-year break in service in order to be eligible for this process. The Equivalency of Training Process allows an officer to be exempt from the full basic recruit academy.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Worked for at least one year as a full time sworn officer in the discipline that you are seeking
- Attended an academy comparable to Florida’s basic recruit full-time academy or
- Were previously certified in Florida
Once approved, you will receive an Equivalency of Training CJSTC Form 76.
You will then need to demonstrate proficiency in the high liability areas and pass the state certification exam in the same discipline within 1-year of receipt of the approved Equivalency of Training CJSTC Form 76.

Miami Police Officer Training Prerequisites And Education Requirements
Applicants to the Miami Police Department must meet certain eligibility requirements: be a minimum of 19 years old and a US citizen, possess a high school diploma or a GED, hold a valid drivers license, and have passed either the FBAT in Law Enforcement, CJBAT in Law Enforcement, or FDLE Police Examination through an authorized test provider. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony or who have been convicted of a misdemeanor for perjury will be immediately disqualified. Florida Law Enforcement Academy
The Florida Law Enforcement Academy Career Technical Certificate prepares students for certification as police officers in the state of Florida. The Full-Time Florida Law Enforcement Academy runs for approximately six months M-F, 8am-5pm. The School of Justice also conducts a Part-Time Florida Law Enforcement Academy that runs forapproximately nine months M-F 6pm to 10pm. The cost and requirements for this program are the same as the Full-Time Academy. The program emphasizes practical applications and competency-based performance.
This program is offered at the School of Justice only. All Criminal Justice Standards Training Commission , as well as Department of Education and local standards will be met.

Investigations By Us Department Of Justice
The US Department of Justice has twice investigated the Miami Police Department since 2002.
A civil investigation conducted between 2011 and 2013 found that the city of Miami Police Department has “engaged in a pattern or practice of excessive use of force through officer-involved shootings in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.” Between 2008 and 2011, officers intentionally shot at individuals on 33 separate occasions, three of which MPD itself found unjustified. The US DOJ found that a number of MPD practices, including deficient tactics, improper actions by specialized units, as well as egregious delays and substantive deficiencies in deadly force investigations, contributed to the pattern or practice of excessive force. However, it should be noted that all of the aforementioned officer-involved shootings that have been analyzed to date by the State Attorneys Office were found to be justified.
The findings letter of the investigation is available on the DOJ website. To address the issues it identified, the city will enter a judicially overseen agreement with the DOJ. In a statement responding to the investigation, Chief Manuel Orosa said, “The Miami Police Department welcomes this long-awaited response and looks forward to the opportunity to clarify several components of the letter, as well as to labor intensely to negotiate an agreement with the Department of Justice, as promptly as possible.”

The Miami Police Department operates five field units: the north district, central district, south district, specialized operations, and community relations. Additionally, there are 27 special units within the Miami Police Department including Narcotics, Aviation Patrol, K-9, Gang Unit, Intelligence & Terrorism, and Special Investigations. Officers must typically gain experience in patrol before becoming eligible to apply to specialized units.
While the Miami Police Department has made progress in combating crime, the department has been investigated by the US Department of Justice in recent years over the use of excessive force, including officer-involved shootings and allegations of police brutality, many of which were not promptly investigated.3 As a result, the Miami Police Department has a judicial oversight settlement agreement with the DOJ that calls for reforms within the department to reduce the number of use of force incidents, including through enhanced training and community monitoring, and improve the departments investigative processes for similar incidents.4
