What Law Enforcement Looks For In New Recruits

Law enforcement agencies look for a few key traits in new recruits. The first is that you meet the standards for your age. You must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 21 years old when you graduate from the police academy to start your career. You are also required to have a valid drivers license and you must pass a background check. If you have been convicted of a crime, then you will not be accepted into the police academy.

The police agencies also require that you pass a psychological evaluation and that you have the legal ability to obtain a firearm. If you are not qualified to purchase a firearm, then you will not qualify for the law enforcement agency. The final consideration is the physical standards set by the police force. You must be able to pass the fitness test to qualify for your role as a police officer.

Work Out To Develop Physical Fitness

In your work as a cop, you may get into situations where you will really need to exert a lot of physical strength probably in self-defense or in the hot pursuit of a dangerous criminal. So you would need to build your self to gain stamina and strength. You may also need to climb heights, crawl through tunnels. All of these may require strength.

History Of The College

In the early 1950s, a group from the Chief Constables Association, later the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, developed a plan to establish a centralized police training college in Ontario. In 1959, an advisory committee on police training was appointed and the search began for an ideal location for this new facility.

An Elgin County politician, Ron McNeil, suggested the decommissioned Royal Canadian Air Force Station Aylmer as a potential site for the new Ontario Police College . During World War II, Royal Canadian Air Force Station Aylmer served as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, housing flying instructors, trainee pilots, and ground crew from all over the world. Situated on 121.5 hectares of land, the base had facilities such as barracks, hangers, a drill hall, and a series of runways that could be repurposed for police training. The history of the property and facilities remains an important part of the OPC. A memorial to the servicemen and women of RCAF Station Aylmer, featuring a restored wind tee from the base, stands at the front entrance to the College.

Now, the OPC is one of the largest police training facilities in North America with over 8,000 recruits, police officers, and civilian personnel attending each year.

This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis. Heres more about police academy training:

Classroom education

The classroom curriculum will focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from the law itself to administrative and department procedures. Cadets will also learn not just what the law is, but how to apply it in the real world. For example, a police officer may know that probable cause is required for a warrant to conduct a search, but what about the exceptions where a warrant isnt needed? Or what should the officer do or say if an individual contests the validity of the warrant? Much of this classroom training will be necessary before field training can take place or to put the hands-on skills into context.

Police Academy Training Schedule

When getting in shape for the police academy, it is important to have a plan. Reach out to your local police department to learn the specific events and minimum scores for the physical agility exam. It may be helpful to attempt the test ahead of time to evaluate your current fitness level and any weaknesses you may need to improve. Then develop a training plan to improve your strength, speed and endurance.

Your workout program should include both running for aerobic training and strength training in the form of calisthenics and weight lifting. While you can include, and benefit from, other forms of aerobic exercise like cycling and swimming, the physical agility tests include a distance run and a sprint, so it is important that your body is acclimated to this activity.

If you are not currently a runner, start by alternating walking and running. Slowly increase the amount of time you spend running, and decrease the time you walk, until you can complete 30-minutes of running. Then work on improving your speed until you can complete the runs in the required time. When you run, keep your body tall and your chest lifted, and remember to breathe.
