After a crime is reported, the police will review it carefully and decide what action to take. Actions may range from a simple caution letter to lengthy and complex investigations. Police in Canada are required to function independently, free from political or any other kind of interference.

When you report a crime to the police, they will make a about whether or not to investigate. If there is an investigation, the police will investigate thoroughly and objectively as an independent body.

Reporting A Crime Useful Information:

  • Anyone who is aware that a crime has been committed can report it. It is not essential for you to have been personally affected by the crime.
  • You can report a crime even if you do not know who committed it.
  • You can report a crime at any police station or to the cantonal prosecution service, either verbally or in writing.

Upon Completion Of This Report Process You Will:

  • See the words: “Your online police report has been submitted”.
  • You will then immediately receive a temporary police report file number and an email informing you that we have received your report and that it is pending review. A temporary file number will appear in this format: T11000999. Temporary file numbers cannot be used for insurance purposes.
  • If you do not receive an email with a temporary file number, please check your Spam or Junk-Email folder.
  • A police officer will review your report and either Approve, Reject or request additional follow-up information from you. You will be advised via email of the status of your report. Do not reply via email to any of these automated messages as these accounts are not monitored. Follow the directions provided on how to respond regarding your report.
  • Once your report is approved, you will receive a permanent report number – this number appears in this format: 11-123456.
  • Be able to print a copy of the police report to keep for your records only. This copy cannot be used for insurance purposes.

How To Report A Crime

You can report a crime in several ways:

  • If its an emergency and the crime is still taking place, call and ask for the police.
  • If its not an emergency, do not call 999. This doesnt mean the crime is not important it just helps the police to make the best use of their resources. Many police forces use the 101 non-emergency number, so you can ring that number instead.
  • You can go to your local police station and report the crime there. You can find the address and telephone number in the local telephone directory or online. Check what time your local police station is open, as not all stations are open all the time.
  • You can contact Crimestoppers on if you want to remain anonymous.
  • If youve experienced hate crime, you can also report the incident online through True Vision, or Victim Supports online portal if you live in Wales.

    • Theft from a parkade or vehicle parked in a parkade only if no forced entry, otherwise call 403-266-1234.
    • Theft of mail including deliveries from postal services such as UPS.

    A Police Report Forms The Basis For A Police Investigation

    You can file a police report online or by visiting your local police station when the customer service desk is open. There are no printable crime report forms on the Poliisi.fi website.

    Police reports cannot be filed over the telephone if there is another way, as the police needs to be able to verify your identity. Deliberately reporting false information to the police is a punishable offence.

    Police reports can only be filed at designated times. The police only responds to reports filed at night if immediate police presence is needed. The online reporting service is unavailable at night between the hours of 10.45 pm and 6.00 am.

    Each police station has its own telephone service hours. Calls are answered by the customer service desk, which also deals with customers who visit the police station in person. Queues are therefore possible.

    Reporting Crime By Phone

    If something youre worried about is happening right now call 111. If your matter isnt urgent please call 105.

    105 is a national non-emergency number that will be answered 24/7 by Police. The call taker will work to resolve the matter, which might include putting the caller through to their local station for it to be dealt with.

    Both 111 for emergencies and 105 for non-emergencies are staffed with highly trained people who are able to help callers with their specific issues.

    Any report taken by Police will be analysed to see whether there is sufficient information to pursue. Police will contact you to let you know what action has been taken.

    If you have already made a report to Police, you can go online to 105.police.govt.nz and request an update, add more information or withdraw your report.

    You Should Call 911 If:

    • You are in immediate danger and/or a life threatening situation
    • You fear for your personal safety or the safety of others
    • Someone is injured or experiencing a medical emergency
    • There is a fire

    While talking with the 911 operator:

    • Remain calm and speak clearly
    • Be prepared to answer where, what, when, who, and how
    • Let the call-taker ask the questions
    • Stay on the phone if it is safe to do so, or until the call taker advises you to hang up
    • If the call requires transfer to another agency, stay on the line. You may hear a series of clicks as the transfer occurs
    • If the 9-1-1 center is extremely busy and your call is not answered within approximately 15 seconds, you will hear a recording indicating that operators are busy. The tones that follow the recording support devices for the hearing impaired. Stay on the line, do not hang up and call back

    • The nature of the emergency
    • If it is a medical emergency you will be asked questions about the patients physical condition

    • Whether you want an officer to respond to see you
    • To be prepared to follow any instructions the call-taker gives you. Call takers can provide step-by-step information about what to do until help arrives.

    If you receive a bomb threat over the telephone, Ready.gov provides the following information on what to do:

    • Get as much information from the caller as possible. Try to ask the following questions:
