What To Expect In The Police Academy

    3/26/2019

If youve been offered a law enforcement position with a police department, your next step will be attending the police academy. Heres what you need to know about attending the police academy in preparation for becoming a law enforcement officer.

How long does it take to go through the police academy? Each academy and state have their own requirements, but typically it will take around 6 months to complete your training at the police academy.

Will attending the police academy cost me anything? Actually, because attending and graduating from the police academy is required for your new job as a law enforcement officer, not only do you not have to pay to attend, you will receive your full starting salary while youre training at the academy. If you attend the police academy without a job offer in place, you will have to pay tuition, though you can sometimes get a partial reimbursement for tuition if you get a law enforcement job after attending the academy. The average tuition for police academy is $6,700.

What types of classes will I have to take? Each academy has a mandated curriculum, which means there are a set of core classes youll be required to take. In the classroom, youll learn things like state law, investigation techniques, computer skills, and report-writing, and youll also get practical, hands-on instruction in things like firearms handling, first aid, driving, and combat fight techniques.

Does The Police Academy Cost Anything

For many police recruits, attending the academy is not only free, but it will also earn them a salary. That’s because they have already been hired as police officers, and the academy, generally run by the hiring agency or the state in which they will be working, is considered part of the new job. These officers can expect to earn either their starting salary in full or a fraction of it, with the remainder kicking in upon graduation.

While many states, including Washington and Oregon, require recruits to be offered a jobbefore completing the academy, others allow aspiring officers to attend stand-alone academies, generally offered by community colleges and local tech schools. These programs do require students to pay tuition, which again will vary depending on the location and institution. The Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Wayne County Community College in North Carolina, for example, costs around $2,000 to attend. Some programs may also charge extra fees for things like the required background check, fingerprinting, application for state certification, physical evaluation and uniforms.

    Police Academy Requirements For Age

Most police academies have an age minimum and maximum age limit however the police academy requirements for age vary from state to state. While the majority of states require that applicants be at least 21 years of age, few do allow applicants as young as 18 years old. In regards to the age limit, most police academies prefer that applicants be under the age of 36 years old. This is due to the police departments required retirement age of 56. Those 36 and older may still apply but will most likely only be eligible for part-time positions upon graduation.

*EXCEPTION: Applicants with prior active military duty are given leniency in regards to age.

At the academy, you learn everything you need to know about effectively performing police officer duties. If local police departments are not hiring, it doesnt mean you should be passive. Instead, take a proactive approach and pay for your own law enforcement academy training. Doing so can make you a frontrunner for open positions when the department starts hiring again.

Contact your local or state law enforcement training academy. Ask the academy representative whether self-sponsorship is an option. Not all academies have a self-sponsorship option. If self-sponsorship is an option, request an academy self-sponsored admissions application.
