TCOLE requires 643 hours of Basic Peace Officer instruction on specified topics. Our law enforcement academy requires and provides 774 hours.

Our state-licensed academy offers both full-time and part-time Basic Peace Officer courses:

  • Full-time classes are held from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and take about one semester to complete.
  • Part-time classes are held from 6 – 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and take about two semesters to complete.
  • Ours is an open-enrollment academy one of only a few in the North Texas area. Cadets who meet both state and college requirements may be accepted to the academy without agency endorsement.

Texoma Regional Police Academy

The Texoma Regional Police Academy at Grayson College offers a 20 week daytime program designed to prepare students for a challenging and rewarding career in law enforcement. TRPA also offers a 44 week part time evening academy class. Students are awarded 24 credit hours of college credit for the completion of the Police Academy program at Grayson College. The police academy is accredited by The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement .

Throughout the program, students will participate in classroom instruction and live training exercises. Individuals completing the day or night Academy and passing the TCOLE state-licensing exam are certified to seek employment in state and local law enforcement agencies, throughout Texas, as a full time peace officer or reserve officer.

Police Academy Requirements For Age

Most police academies have an age minimum and maximum age limit however the police academy requirements for age vary from state to state. While the majority of states require that applicants be at least 21 years of age, few do allow applicants as young as 18 years old. Basic Peace Officer Training

Eastfields Criminal Justice Training Center was licensed in 1991 by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education now the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to provide Basic Peace Officer training and In-Service Peace Officer training.

The goal of our Basic Peace Officer training is to produce graduates who can perform law enforcement work at entry level and pass the TCOLE certification exam. The first-time pass rate of our graduates is 98 percent, with a 100 percent pass rate on the second attempt. Texas Trooper Or Highway Patrol Requirements

Texas has approximately 225,544 miles of rural highways and the state depends on the Texas Highway Patrol to patrol those highways.2 The THP has over 2,100 commissioned officers and is divided into seven regions and 19 districts.2 In order to be eligible for a Texas state trooper position, prospective officers must satisfy state requirements and:

Withdrawal And Dismissal Policy

Southwest Texas Junior College Law Enforcement Academy reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any student whose health, attendance, conduct, personal qualities or scholastic records indicate that it would be inadvisable for the student to continue in the program. Students must maintain a minimum grade of 80 in all areas of the academy program. Students withdrawing from the academy must comply with the SWTJC withdrawal policy and must participate in an exit interview in order to remain in good standing.

Texas Police Officer Requirements

The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement sets statewide minimum requirements to become a Texas police officer. Although the TCOLE sets the minimum standards for law enforcement recruitment, departments may set requirements above the TCOLE minimums. For example, many departments require an associates degree as well as a higher age minimum.

The minimum guidelines set by TCOLE to become a Texas police officer are as follows. Candidates must:

Courses Offered By Semester

The purpose of the San Antonio College Law Enforcement Academys Basic Peace Officer course, a 696 hour course of study, is to prepare prospective law enforcement officers for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Certification Exam.
