Career And Employment Outlook For Cops In Memphis

Selecting a profession is a significant decision. One of the key elements to contemplate while doing so is the prospect of that career. The career outlook of all professions is typically furnished by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The factors that come into play while predicting this include the future need for that profession and the spending nature of the employers. Let us look at the career prospects for a police officer.

As of 2014, there were about 806,000 jobs held by police officers. It is predicted that this will grow by 4% in the following decade. This rate of expansion is more lethargic than the median of other professions. This means that about 33,000 new jobs will be created for police officers within the next decade. Because cops are typically hired by the government, their employment is influenced a great deal by the political atmosphere in a region. Some cities may want to spend more on police officers while others may want to direct their budget to other forms of development.

How To Become A Police Officer

Looking to get into a career in law enforcement? Youve come to the right place. Demand for police officers is slowly rising, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is expected to grow by 7% between 2010 and 2020. Getting the proper training and education is vital to get in this field, although having a military background is an added bonus.

Regardless of how rigid it may sound, the road to becoming a police officer starts with getting the right education as early as possible. Even the most basic jobs in a law enforcement agency include having a Baccalaureate diploma and police academy training within the minimum requirements standards.

Taking into account the fierce competition for attending basic law enforcement training programs in an accredited police academy, the correct approach does not only entail working to meet the minimal requirements, but rather being prepared for whatever challenges they might throw at you.

    Education Or Training Background

    What Is A Police Chaplain

A police chaplain is a chaplain who serves in a precinct and works primarily with police officers to provide support and counseling. A chaplain is a little different from a traditional minister in that chaplains primarily work in secular areaspolice departments, hospitals, military bases, prisons, etc. While chaplains, including police chaplains, are fully ordained and can lead a church, they are generally called ministers, pastors, or some other term in that case.

Police chaplains work in conjunction with police departments, sheriff departments, and other law enforcement groups to provide counseling, support, and other services to law enforcement personnel. This does mean talking with officers who have gone through traumatic experiences, but it also means visiting those who are injured, speaking to the family of an officer who died in the line of duty, and giving prayers at certain events. In most cases, a police chaplain offers religious counseling in addition to the ministers of an officers church. They dont usually hold church services for the precinct or police station.

    Program Objectives And Goals

The goal of graduate programs in religion is to prepare students to enter into the ministry and become leaders in the church. Many of these programs dont specifically aim to educate students to be police chaplains, but some do offer courses aimed at counseling and leading congregations of people with unusual needs, including police officers. The programs aim to teach graduates everything it takes to lead a church, including providing training and education in the areas of church administration, Biblical counseling, public speaking, and more.

    Tennessee Law Enforcement Certification Standards

The State of Tennessee has set down the application requirements for police officers in writing and on the Internet, and it is similar to those in other states. However, the police academy requirements in Tennessee may have some variations depending on which particular department you file your application. In general though:

    • You must be a US citizen
    • Have a valid Tennessee drivers license
    • Provide a criminal history disclosure and agree to release all pertinent records
    • Running around an obstacle course
    • Climbing fences or walls
    • Lift heavy objects

The training sessions and routines are dependent of age and gender so variations when it comes to the number of reps should be expected. Aside from an intensive physical training program, your training will include learning how to use weapons, simulate different crime situations and handle different scenarios that require a great deal of physical agility and endurance. Because the demands of the job are high, only those who pass all the tests will be accepted into the academy.

    Police Chaplain Duties And Qualities

    54

A police chaplain is a specially trained chaplain who works mainly with law enforcement personnel. If youre going to be a police chaplain, you will have to fulfill all of the religious and educational requirements to be a full-fledged minister in your church. This means you could, if you later wanted to, lead a church congregation. You will, as an ordained person, have the authority to marry people and provide other types of rites. However, a police chaplain is more or less a minister without a church, so you may not often be called upon to perform these duties.

In some cases, especially in smaller precincts, the police chaplain is an unpaid position. A minister from a nearby church may volunteer to visit the station a few times a week to talk with the officers, or police officers may know to seek out the minister in times of need. However, generally these chaplains do go through an application process because not every minister is cut out to be a police chaplain.

Thats because police chaplains have to have more than just a deep faith and a calling to the ministry. Working with officers requires a greater understanding of loss and what it means for someone to be going through a period of intense grief. Officers may confront death on a regular basis, and very few go through their entire careers without being put in a threatening position. As their chaplain, you have to know how to approach these situations and help the officers through them.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer

Memphis Police officer shot, killed during traffic stop

Because the law enforcement departments have their own set of requirements for admitting new personnel, the time frame needed to become a cop is hard to specify. Some police departments will accept candidates who have a high school diploma and have successfully graduated from state law enforcement training programs, which typically last from 3 to 6 months.

Other departments will impose applicants to earn a college degree in order to be considered for a training program. As a side note, recently the law enforcement agencies located in the large cities of the United States will only accept interns who graduated from an Associates Degree or higher learning program.

Moreover, in the Southern part of the U.S. , police departments favor candidates who know a foreign language. Therefore, training to become a cop in one of the large American metropolises takes minimum two years to earn a higher education degree and an additional year for graduating from a police academy.
