How To Become A Police Officer In Kansas City
With a population of approximately 475,378, Kansas City, Missouri has a cost of living 13% lower than the national average.1 However, the metro area crime rate is higher than the average for similarly-sized cities, with 596.7 violent crimes and 2,727.9 property crimes per 100,000 residents.2 The 1,282 sworn members and 515 non-sworn personnel of the Kansas City Police Department are devoted to reducing the crime rate while protecting and serving the residents of the city.3 The process and requirements for joining the KCPD as a sworn officer is outlined below.
Reciprocity Certification Program In Becoming A Police Officer In Kansas
Even though the police academies in Kansas have a reciprocity program, it is noteworthy that it is conditioned by fulfilling additional requirements. Therefore, the applicants for the reciprocity certification must be employed in a law enforcement agency recognized by the state of Kansas.
Alternatively, the unemployed candidates are not allowed to have discontinued the career in the police force for more than five years. In addition, the basic training received by the applicants must be the equivalent of the training typically received in the Kansas police academies.
Candidates who do not meet these criteria will need to undergo a 14-week basic training program in order to receive certification.

How To Become A Kansas City Missouri Police Officer
The Kansas City Police Department continually seeks diverse and well-qualified recruits to join the police force. The KCPD evaluates prospective recruits who meet the requirements listed below through a series of written, physical abilities, polygraph, and psychological examinations. All candidates are required to go on a ride-along with a seasoned Kansas City police officer during the screening process. A complete medical examination takes place once a candidate has received an employment offer. Accepted recruits complete between 28 and 30 weeks of training at the Kansas City Police Academy and, after gaining experience with the department, may be eligible for promotion to specialized units.

Kansas City Regional Police Academy
New recruits to the KCPD complete basic training at the Regional Police Academy in Kansas City. The academy trains new cops with all the skills needed to work in law enforcement and the curriculum is set by Missouris Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. The basic training program is a rigorous course of comprehensive studies and takes 28 to 30 weeks to complete. Upon successful completion, recruits become certified as sworn officers. For the first six months of employment, officers are considered probationary hires and participate in further training through the departments field training program.

Salary Benefits And Jobs Outlook
New law enforcement officers in the KCPD earn $3,130 per month during basic training, $3,444 during a six-month probationary period after training, and $43,404 per year as a fully sworn officer after successfully completing probation.3 Officers in the KCPD also get benefits such as paid vacation time, overtime pay, sick leave, health insurance, tuition reimbursement, and college incentive pay. The police defined benefit contribution plan is based on a member contribution of 11.55% of base pay members are eligible to retire after 27 years of service.5 Retirement pay is based on the 36 months of service during which the member received the highest base salary.5 The average annual salary for a cop in the Kansas City metro is $53,700.6
Long-term projections for the state of Missouri suggest that the outlook for future jobs in law enforcement is good. Training that is attended live where an instructor, facilitator or training coordinator is present at the delivery site to answer questions during the training program may be classified as Unclassified. Law Enforcement Basic Training Program
KSA 74-5603 mandates that “The director shall be responsible for determining the curriculum of the program, subject to such changes and modification as are directed by the law enforcement training commission.” Pursuant to KSA 74-5603, the director has determined that a 560-hour basic training competency-based curriculum is necessary with all programs conducted on or after August 9, 2021. The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission concurred in a public meeting held on December 2nd, 2021. Therefore, the Commission acting pursuant to the authority granted in KSA 74-5603 has approved, authorized, and required 560-hours as the minimum number of hours required for full-time law enforcement basic training in Kansas.
The curriculum that took effect on August 9, 2021, was a direct result of countless hours of work by the curriculum team and instructional and administrative staff of KLETC to create a curriculum that was reflective of changes needed for law enforcement officers in Kansas to effectively serve their communities. While the building process was ongoing, end users of the curriculum were frequently involved in the work needed to tailor curricula to the needs of new officers through meetings, visits, phone conversations, and conferences via the internet, with law enforcement leaders and trainers from across the state.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Sheriff In Kansas

Since the sheriff position is a senior leadership role, it demands certain work experience. Therefore, candidates can work as a police officer for some years before applying for the sheriffs position.
It is advised that the candidates obtain a bachelors or a masters degree in a relevant field such as Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement Intelligence or Public Safety Administration. This will help the candidates improve their career prospects and make them more desirable for the sheriffs position.
The candidate would be required to pass the written and physical exams. This would be followed by interviews, drug screening, medical exam and a background investigation.
The candidates would have to file the documents with the respective counties. After that has been done, the candidates can begin preparing for their election campaign. Pass A Challenge Examination Developed By The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center And Qualify With A Duty Handgun
Officers choosing this option must pass a written examination covering contemporary law enforcement procedures, law, and tactics with a minimum score of 70%. KLETC will develop and administer the examination and will make available to officers comprehensive study materials via Blackboard link in advance of the test date. Officers who pass the academic examination must then qualify at the KLETC Firearms Range with their duty handgun. A minimum qualification score of 70% is required.
The material covered in the online classes are a preparation for onsite written testing and firearms qualification on prescribed dates at KLETC. Dates for the testing can be found on the annual KLETC schedule found at KLETC Website, > Basic Training, > Basic Training Schedule . Applicants may contact the KLETC Registrar at or by e-mail at to begin the process to access Blackboard.
Officers who pass the written and firearms tests will receive proof of reinstatement. Officers who fail the academic portion must attend and successfully complete a full basic training academy class to achieve reinstatement. Officers who pass the academic, but not the firearms portion, of the challenge procedure may return, with the approval of their agency head, to KLETC for not more than one remedial firearms training session if they successfully qualify following this training, they will receive reinstatement.

Johnson County Regional Police Academy
The Johnson County Regional Police Academy is located in Overland Park, Kansas, on the west side of the campus of Johnson County Community College.
Police Academy Recruits that attend the academy must first be employed by one of these agencies as police officers. They are then sent here to receive their basic training.
Under Kansas state law, all new police officer must receive their basic law enforcement training within one year of being hired. Successful completion of the 18-week academy results in certification as a Kansas law enforcement officer.
The academy is operated in cooperation with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, JCCC and the Johnson County Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Association.
Applications: Applications to become academy-eligible police officers must be made with individual law enforcement agencies.
