Are You Ready Heres What It Takes To Get Into The Police Academy

    June 12, 2019 By CJevolution

When you want to start a criminal justice career, you may consider taking on a role as a police officer or a detective. Attending your states police academy plays a critical role in the process by giving you the training you need to handle the challenges of your career. By taking measures to prepare for your career options, you will be able to improve your chances of starting a career in law enforcement.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, opportunities within the police and law enforcement are growing at a rate that is average for the overall job market. It is similar to the growth of other fields and industries, so there are opportunities each year due to the increasing growth of the population. Roles within the police force also become available when older police officers decide to retire from their job.

Exact job growth depends on locality and the needs of your community. In some locations, you may have more options available for your career. Other areas may have limited options for new recruits due to the size of the department or the limitations in the budget.

How To Pay For Law Enforcement Academy

Lima Police Department thanks sponsors for summer academy

When police departments are interested in hiring you to join the local law enforcement team, they sponsor your attendance at the recruit academy. At the academy, you learn everything you need to know about effectively performing police officer duties. If local police departments are not hiring, it doesn’t mean you should be passive. Instead, take a proactive approach and pay for your own law enforcement academy training. Doing so can make you a frontrunner for open positions when the department starts hiring again.

    1

Contact your local or state law enforcement training academy. Ask the academy representative whether self-sponsorship is an option. Not all academies have a self-sponsorship option. If self-sponsorship is an option, request an academy self-sponsored admissions application.

    2

Ensure that you meet the academy’s age and citizenship requirements. In most cases, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years of age, and have a high school diploma or GED.

    3

    4

Pay your academy tuition once you receive notification that you are accepted into the academy. It can take a few weeks to a few months for you to receive this notification, depending upon the academy. Attend training on your scheduled training date. The exact cost for attending the academy varies, but expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to to more than $5,000.

Can I Work Nights Or Weekends During The Full

Yes, however, it is strongly discouraged. The recruit training program is designed to be a rigorous program with challenging physical and academic requirements. The physical demands involve not only fitness training but also skills training, such as defensive tactics, firearms, and emergency vehicle operation, all of which require a high degree of stamina and concentration. The recruit training program also requires a great deal of non-academy time for homework, study, and preparation for the next training day. Similarly, please note that the goal of the academy is to prepare you for performance on the street and your career as a police officer. Retention of the knowledge and skills obtained in the academy is critical to success on the street. Insufficient rest and inadequate time to study and prepare will severely and negatively impact retention and application. As a result, due to concerns about your attentiveness and safety during the training and due to our desire that you successfully complete the training and have success as an officer, we strongly discourage working during the academy training.

    Police Officer Age Limits

Each police department has its own requirements for the minimum and maximum age of new recruits, so police officer age requirements by state vary, as they do in different cities. For example, the Philadelphia Police Department and the San Diego Police Department do not have maximum age limits for new hires. However, the Fort Worth Police Department wont allow a recruit to take the civil service exam a necessary step in the police hiring process as of his 45th birthday. In Rhode Island, the age limit on police academy training is 35. Meanwhile, the New York City Police Department will allow a candidate over 35 with active military service to add up to six years to his age â taking the maximum to 41. But also keep in mind that some police departments have a mandatory retirement age of 65.

    Other Requirements For Police Officers

Many police departments require recruits to live in the jurisdiction. While some departments allow new hires time to move to the area, others require residency at the time of application. Also, many departments require police officers to have completed some college credits. If you didnt attend college, upgrade your education or select a jurisdiction that only requires a GED equivalency. Some departments waive education requirements if you served in the military or will consider your previous work experience.

Why You May Want To Attend A Police Academy On Your Own

Large police departments generally have their own academies. Medium and smaller agencies often use regional police academies where recruits from various agencies train together. When a recruit from a police department is at a regional police academy they are referred to as a Sponsored Enrollee as their attendance is sponsored by the police department that they have been hired by. Some regional police departments open up their enrollment to individuals not yet hired by a police department and these attendees are called Open Enrollees. Accepting open enrollees is dependent upon space availability in the academy class. It can be very competitive for a spot as an open enrollee in an academy class, going through an application and interview process. Open enrollees go through background checks and pay their own way through the academy. Open enrollees go through the same training as sponsored attendees. When an open enrollee graduates they have their peace officer certification but they are not a sworn peace officer. If they get hired by an agency that accepts their certification they do not have to go through the academy and can be sworn in right away.
