No matter which program you choose, before beginning work at a police department, you will have to enter a police academy for formal training. This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis.     These requirements include:

    • Age: Depending on the department, officers need to be at least 18 or 21 years old.
    • Driver’s license: Police officers must have a valid driver’s license and a generally clean driving record. This requirement is due to many officers using a patrol car on the job.

    Education And Military Requirements

    If you are between 18 and 20 years of age, you must have an associates degree or at least 60 hours worth of credits from an accredited college or university. Usually, candidates will take courses related to law enforcement such as criminal justice, sociology or psychology to give them an edge in this competitive field.

    If you do not meet the education requirements, you can substitute college credit with military service however, you must have received an honorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces after at least 2 years of active service.

    For those who are 21 years of age or older, college credit or military service is not required.

    First, you must determine if you are eligible to become a Peace Officer in Georgia. According to Georgia Law you must meet or be willing to meet all of the criteria below to become employed or certified as a peace officer:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent
  • Not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of any crime the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in the federal or state prison or institution nor have been convicted of enough misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law

  • Undergo a background investigation
  • Successfully complete the Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass Test. This exam must be completed prior to enrolling in any Basic Law Enforcement Course. This test is given at any technical school. Candidates who do not pass the entrance exam will be ineligible to retake the exam for a period of 30 days after an unsuccessful attempt.
  • POST applications are now completed electronically on the Georgia Post website. Instructions are on the POST website on how to register as a new user through the Post Data Gateway and complete the online application. The academy staff can also help
  • Be fingerprinted for the GBI and FBI to determine the existence of a criminal record
  • Be interviewed by the manager of the GPSTC Regional Academy where you will attend training.

    Skills Needed To Be A Police Officer

    Obtaining A Bachelors Degree In Law Enforcement

    Honours bachelors degrees in law enforcement are most often earned in three to four years. Entrance requirements will vary by institution, but undergraduate programs typically require completion of high school or equivalent.

    How To Become An Ontario Provincial Police Officer

    Interested in joining the Ontario Provincial Police? Here are just a few of the minimum qualifications needed to beat out the competition:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Must have an Ontario Secondary School program diploma , or equivalent
