The exact qualifications and requirements needed to be a police dog trainer will vary on a state-by-state basis. However, in most cases, you will have to go through a training course and obtain so many hours of coursework. In general, these courses usually last between 12 and 16 weeks. They may be offered through colleges, career centers, or independent dog training schools and academies, and they all require payment.
In addition to specialized training, becoming a police dog trainer usually requires a certain amount of experience working with animals. In most cases, the minimum requirement is 3 years, but this doesnt have to be paid, professional dog training. Some states may accept volunteer hours as experience, so dont think that you cant be a police dog trainer if you have no prior paid experience with training animals.

Saskatoon Police Arrest Two Men After Shooting In Mount Royal Area
Saskatoon Police Service is investigating a shooting in the Mount Royal neighbourhood Thursday morning.
A constable and police service dog were involved in a training activity around 6:30 a.m. in the 300-block of Ottawa Avenue North when they heard a gunshot, according to an SPS press release.
Two suspects were seen fleeing the area on bicycles. The constable started chasing the pair on foot and communicated directions to other officers.
Police were able to quickly locate and arrest the duo, according to SPS.
The suspects had a variety of knives, paraphernalia linked to drug trafficking, ammunition, some pills and 28g of suspected methamphetamine, according to police.
Police were also able to locate a discarded firearm from the location.
Charges are pending for the two 30-year-old suspects.

Green police dogs will be trained by the customer. The dogs we offer all have the basic skills to become a perfect single or dual purpose police dog.
Pretrained or semi trained police dogs have basic training. The have had bite and or detection training. These dogs have not been trained to detect any specific odour like narcotics or explosives.
Fully trained policed dogs are expensive. We have spend many hours on preparing these kinds of dogs. They can work immediately for our customers.

Learning To Find The Odor
The trainer now has to teach the dog that the odor is not always easy to find. When the dog is working, it may need to explore a large area, sniffing everywhere to find the odor. So, to teach this, the trainer can put the container in many different hiding places. After the dog searches and sniffs at the container, the trainer will use the marker. If the dog then returns to the trainer, the trainer will give the toy reward. This can be repeated many times.
When the dog starts to get good at searching and finding the container, the trainer can slowly start to increase the time between the sound of the marker and letting the dog play with the toy. This is important because, in the real world, the dogs human partner may not be able to reward the dog with the toy immediately. But the partner can use the marker so the dog can anticipate a reward sometime soon.
How Are They Trained
The police canines meet their trainers for the first time when they are 7 weeks old where they are required to go through a basic test. This test is conducted to identify the natural ability of a dog to follow orders, holding them down, squeezing their paw, crunching paper, fetch, bowl bang and clash and ragtime to judge whether they have what it takes to enter the force or not. These dogs are taught to use their instincts on instruction and in a supervised manner.
Police K9s are rewarded for their good work. While on the training they receive good care, food, exercise, protection, and the training have an emphasis on safety, control, and efficiency. They learn obedience, following commands, search, attack, tracking, substance detection and how to keep focused on distracting situations so that they are prepared for any eventuality while on duty. Dogs are known to be a mans best friend it is for us to see that they are not overworked. After all, a happy dog is a healthy dog.

Popular Dogs For Police Work And How They’re Trained
It’s no secret that German Shepherds have been the most popular police dog for many decades , and they deserve this title for a good reason.
But many other potential police dog breeds are now also trained to be a part of K-9 units in different countries, but the breed range is especially expanding in the west.
There’s no single path for a dog to become a police K9 unit.
Some dogs are raised from puppies to become police dogs, and others are taken from and re-trained from service dogs.
Sometimes police officers in the U.S. even bring dogs from other countries, particularly Germany and Netherlands, and continue training these bilingual dogs for police work here in the United States.
There’s no official entry barrier, and different approaches are taken to bring in new police dog breeds and train them for different tasks.
But this matter is taken seriously by law enforcement â after the full police work training, the dog will then even have to take the oath the same way as a human police officer would.

Strength And Agility Training
Endurance and agility training form the basis of police dog training. In fact, attack dogs need to be even more stronger and agile than other dogs. A police dog is required to jump over walls and climb stairs, besides encountering other obstacles. To perform these activities, the dog needs to be strong and agile. Depending upon its breed and the work to be performed, the training of a dog may start from 6 weeks to 2 years of age.
A Police Dog Isnt Just A Dog
Before you get a dog, talk to someone who knows about police dogs. Just because it is a Belgian Malinois, German shepherd or a Labrador, doesnt mean it will make a good police dog.
Beware of breeders who are willing to donate a dog or puppy to you. Most of the time, despite good intentions, these dogs do not have the temperament for suitable for K-9 work. If you are not experienced with working dogs, you will not be able to raise a puppy properly for K-9 work, so a puppy is a bad idea even if its parents are working dogs. The days of donated dogs are officially over.
Consider imported or professionally raised dogs from European breeding stock. Look for imported dogs between 11 months and 3 years old from an established K-9 vendor with extensive references. At this age, you can select a dog with the needed temperament and drive to be fairly certain it will successfully complete the required training class. Make sure to first assess what your community needs and what options are out there for training the dog.

About Our Police Canines
The Calgary Police Service Canine Unit was first established in 1960. Police canines play an integral role in apprehending individuals who have committed serious criminal offences. They are used to locate evidence of a crime such as weapons or clothing, or for locating drugs, explosives and cadavers. A dogs sense of smell is incredibly more refined than that of a human, and using this tool often gives police the advantage of locating people who have fled the scene of a crime and locating items related to that crime.
How many dogs are in the unit and what breeds are used? The canine unit consists of 22 different dogs in roles from general patrol to specialty detection work. Different agencies use different breeds for police work. In Calgary we generally use the German shepherd. We have also used the Belgian malinois and the Labrador retriever. These breeds have shown the greatest ability to do police work. They have an incredible sense of smell, are tireless workers, and are generally quite social.
How often are the dogs deployed?On average the dogs are called on approximately four times a shift. The canine unit was deployed to 8,571 calls in 2011 and directly responsible for the capture of 358 suspects.
