Being a police officer is a meaningful way to serve a community. As a police officer, you will be a public servant responsible for responding to fires and other emergency situations in your community. After taking the written exam, your name will be placed on the eligible list. When a police department is ready to hire, they request the eligible list and the Civil Service Unit sends a list of names.

If your name is reached, the hiring process will begin and may include the following

If you are offered a job you can expect to first complete the following as part of the conditional offer of employment

Once you have successfully passed the medical exam and PAT as well as any additional requirements from the department, you will begin your new rewarding career as a police officer.

Step : Minimum Qualifications

First, you must determine if you are eligible to become a Peace Officer in Georgia. According to Georgia Law you must meet or be willing to meet all of the criteria below to become employed or certified as a peace officer:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent
  • Not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of any crime the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in the federal or state prison or institution nor have been convicted of enough misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law
  • Contact the GPSTC Regional Academy you wish to attend
  • Undergo a background investigation
  • Successfully complete the Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass Test. This exam must be completed prior to enrolling in any Basic Law Enforcement Course. This test is given at any technical school. Candidates who do not pass the entrance exam will be ineligible to retake the exam for a period of 30 days after an unsuccessful attempt.
  • POST applications are now completed electronically on the Georgia Post website. Instructions are on the POST website on how to register as a new user through the Post Data Gateway and complete the online application. The academy staff can also help
  • Be fingerprinted for the GBI and FBI to determine the existence of a criminal record
  • Be interviewed by the manager of the GPSTC Regional Academy where you will attend training.

    Do You Need A Degree To Be A Cop

    To be completely clear, formal education, such as an associateâs degree or a bachelorâs degree is not actually a strict requirement for becoming a police officer. However, many departments across the country are requiring at least a two-year degree, while others are placing a strong emphasis on hiring 4-year college graduates.

    Even when not an official requirement for a job opening, having your college degree will be immensely helpful in the hiring process.     What About Basic Training

    Completing a basic police academy prior to your hiring is dependent on the agency you apply to. Some will only hire upon completion of the academy others hire you and then send you through the academy afterward. Check with the agency youre applying to for further information.

    My name is Sundeep Kaur Cheema. I am a custody sergeant for West Midlands Police.

    I am a Sikh, and one of the fundamental principles is serving others. As a Sikh officer, I just feel that complements my role because those values and my morals and the morals that have been instilled within me over the years, through grandparents as well, but particularly faith is just a complementary feature to policing.

    One of they key reasons why I wanted to join policing is because I hadnt seen any other Asian officers. Theres nobody that I felt was representing our community. My cousin who is also a sergeant with West Mids, he was already a police officer, so Id spoken to him and he inspired me to join.

    As a custody sergeant, my main responsibility is looking after the welfare and needs of any detained person that comes into custody.

    Ive grown up within a store, so my parents are independent retailer. Ive spent all my life, my childhood, within the business environment, serving the community. You know I know no different. So again, when it comes to policing this is quite a natural transition for me.
