Police Academies Are Learning Institutions
Above all else, police academies are places of learning. Each state has different requirements dealing with the mandated curriculum and training hours a recruit has to have before getting law enforcement or POST certification. Typically, academy recruits will spend upwards of 800 hours or more in training before they graduate. Most of this instruction takes place in a classroom.
Academics are very important in police academy training. Recruits usually take at least one test a week while they are in the academy, and there are strict rules in place about getting a passing score.
In Florida, for example, recruits must receive an 80% or higher on each test while they are in the academy. If they fail to achieve 80% on any test, they have to leave the academy. Developing effective study habits is essential for academy success.

How Police Academies Work
If one thing separates police recruits from full-fledged officers, it’s pepper spray. On-duty officers keep a can handy in case of unruly criminals, but recruits in police academies have to stand still and a take a burning spritz in the face.
Pepper spray training is just one of the physically and mentally demanding exercises that thousands of men and women in police academies go through in pursuit of the blue uniform.
Before police academies were developed in the United States in the early 20th century, an officer’s training took place on the streets. Aside from following the law, police learned by trial and error from the different encounters they came across. Now, every police officer in the nation goes through a formalized certification course at a police academy.
Police academies are similar to basic training programs in the military. Recruits, people in training to become police officers, may live in dormitories for six to eight months, waking up at 5 a.m. and turning the lights out at 10 p.m. sharp. After a day of intense physical training and academic classes, they eat dinner and settle down for a few hours of studying before heading to bed.
Even in non-residential academies where recruits go home in the evenings, training is focused and regimented. After all, the basic program is an average of 720 course hours .
How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer
When choosing to embark on any career, its certainly helpful to know how long the educational process will take. For those wanting to work as a police officer, there is no clear-cut answer to the question of how long training and education will take. It really depends on your long-term career goals, as well as which path you choose to get there. Here are some of the most common timelines you might encounter when looking at becoming a police officer.
Nowthat you have a rough idea of how long each educational pathwayusually takes before being able to serve as a law enforcementofficer, lets talk about what to expect from each specific path.
How To Prepare For The Police Academy
The course syllabus is extensive. To get through it successfully, candidates must be prepared. Here are some ways you can navigate through the course with success.
First keep fit. Yes, you may have succeeded in the police officer exam, but your physical strength and endurance are now going to be tested much further. Go to the gym, build strength and cardiovascular capacity to maximize your endurance on the field. You should do strength-based exercises at least three-times weekly, and cardiovascular exercises daily. However, you may tweak this recommendation based on your own activity / inactivity levels.
Second, build teamwork skills. No police officer goes it alone. To succeed at both the police academy and in your future career as a police officer, you must be able to build and maintain personal relationships and this includes working effectively within teams. Sometimes this can be difficult, particularly if its not something you like or are used to. But it is something that you need to work on and its better to start now rather than trying to resolve it when things are too late.

Get The Right Police Education & Training
There was a time when becoming a police officer was as simple as graduating high school or earning your GED, then attending a short training academy before diving into on-the-job training. And though those opportunities do still exist, especially in smaller departments, most departments have raised their standards of education to at least two years of post-secondary work. This means pursing an associate degree in law enforcement or a related field, such as criminal justice, criminology, or police science should be the first option to consider. The associate degree can then serve as a stepping stone to the bachelors degree, which then leads to graduate degree options.
However, other routes to the profession do exist. In addition to the on-the-job training after completing academy training, there is also the military option. Those who work as military police or in a similar capacity while serving their country can be perfectly suited to move into a police force after their military time is up. Lets take a look at the options.

How Does Police Academy Training Work
No matter which program you choose, before beginning work at a police department, you will have to enter a police academy for formal training. This training will consist of various elements that prepare you for life as a police officer, including training it the classroom, field training that walks you through the rigors of the day-to-day work, and in-service training that allows you to begin working with the public on a probationary basis. Heres more about police academy training:
The classroom curriculum will focus on a variety of subjects, ranging from the law itself to administrative and department procedures. Cadets will also learn not just what the law is, but how to apply it in the real world. For example, a police officer may know that probable cause is required for a warrant to conduct a search, but what about the exceptions where a warrant isnt needed? Or what should the officer do or say if an individual contests the validity of the warrant? Much of this classroom training will be necessary before field training can take place or to put the hands-on skills into context.

Law Enforcement Bad Habits
I have seen many cops fall back to bad habits. They sit in their cruisers, eat junk food, gain weight, work long hours, do not get adequate rest, etc. I have seen cops graduate the academy, then a couple of months later they have gained a lot of weight due to the above reasons I listed.
I could some up police work in one phrase. Depending on where you work, police work is 90% boredom and 10% action. So those bad habits catch up with you very quickly.
In the world of law enforcement, your physical fitness is extremely important because that 10% could be that life or death fight, rescuing someone from drowning, a foot chase, running into a burning building, etc. You need to be able to go from 0-100mph in one second.
In the world of Crossfit and boot camp type classes the stress of quantity over quality is causing you to overtrain and what leads people to unnecessary injuries. Injuries that can be avoided when proper form is stressed.
Believe me, if you concentrate on form more than the weight you will have a much better workout.
Snacks To Carry In Your Patrol Bag
Like I stated before, I see cops eating junk food in their cruisers, sitting idle on a street corner. I see cops go into the local convenience and buy greasy chips, hot dogs, soda, candyyou get the picture. You need to fuel your body with proper nutrients throughout the day. I carry a large backpack of food with me all the time.
Below is a list of foods you should have with you as snacks
Apples w/ Almond Butter
