What Happens After The Police Investigate My Complaint
After the police have finished investigating your complaint, they will tell you what will happen next. They may:
- apologise to you,
- change their policies or procedures,
- speak to the person you complained about to improve their performance,
- refer your complaint to the Independent Office for Police Conduct if they think something serious has happened, or
- refer your complaint to the Crown Prosecution Service if they believe that a member of staff has committed a crime.
Unfortunately, the police may not always have enough evidence to take any action. If you are not happy with the outcome of your complaint, you can appeal.
Title Ii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act Of 1990 And Section 504 Of The Rehabilitation Act Of 1973
The Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 prohibit discrimination against individuals on the basis of disability. . These laws protect all people with disabilities in the United States. An individual is considered to have a “disability” if he or she has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, has a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.
The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in all State and local government programs, services, and activities regardless of whether they receive DOJ financial assistance it also protects people who are discriminated against because of their association with a person with a disability. Section 504 prohibits discrimination by State and local law enforcement agencies that receive financial assistance from DOJ. Section 504 also prohibits discrimination in programs and activities conducted by Federal agencies, including law enforcement agencies.

How To Report Sexual Misconduct
Anyone who has experienced Sexual Misconduct or is aware of someone who may have experienced Sexual Misconduct is strongly encouraged to report such misconduct to WPI and to access the resources available on campus and in the community.
Any WPI community member who has concerns about Sexual Misconduct is encouraged to seek the assistance of those listed below.
Helpful Information To Have Ready Before You Submit A Complaint
Depending on your complaint to Victoria Police, helpful information to have ready includes:
- date of the event you are complaining about
- time and location of the incident
- a brief description of the incident
- name and registered number of any police employees involved, if you know them
- name, address and telephone number of any witnesses
- vehicle registration and type of police vehicle/s involved .
If you are making a written complaint keep a copy of the letter you send.
If you speak to someone to make a complaint, record the:
- time
- the name of the person you spoke to
- what they agreed to do.

Reporting Sexual Misconduct Confidentially
You can report Sexual Misconduct to one of WPIs trained confidential resource providers ) or the other WPI and local confidential resources identified below. CRAs and confidential resources will not make reports to the Title IX Office and will maintain confidentiality.
Confidential Resource Advisors are WPI employees who have received special training to be a confidential source of support for WPI community members. A list of current CRAs at WPI is located HERE.
Speaking with a CRA means that no report will be made to the Title IX Office or the WPI Police Department, unless required by law. Reporting to a CRA is not considered notice to WPI that Sexual Misconduct has allegedly occurred.
CRAs can provide information on reporting options and the effects of each reporting option the grievance processes counseling and medical services available at WPI and in the local community and the legal process carried out through local law enforcement and a WPI community members rights and WPIs responsibilities with respect to no-contact orders and legal protective orders.
CRAs may assist a WPI community member in contacting or reporting to the Title IX Office or law enforcement, if requested by the WPI community member.
Any party involved in a Sexual Misconduct incident can speak with a CRA, but CRAs may not provide services to adverse parties. WPI will not discipline, penalize, or otherwise retaliate again a CRA for representing the interest of the party they are assisting.
Who Can Make A Complaint
Anyone who has had an interaction with police in Ontario can make a complaint. You do not have to be an Ontario resident to make a complaint.
You can make a complaint about a police officer if you:
- Have a concern or were offended by something a police officer said or did to you and were directly affected by the incident
- Were a witness to an incident involving a police officer that concerned or offended you
- Are concerned or distressed as a result of the way a relative or friend has been treated by a police officer and are:
- A person in a personal relationship with the directly affected person and has suffered loss, damage, distress, danger or inconvenience
- A person who has knowledge of conduct, or has possession or control of anything that the Director feels constitutes evidence that establishes misconduct or unsatisfactory work performance

Who Cannot Make A Complaint
The following people cannot make a complaint with the OIPRD:
- A member or auxiliary member of a police service cannot complaint about their own service
- An employee of the Ontario Provincial Police cannot complain about the OPP
- A member or employee of a police services board cannot complain about their own service
- An employee of the OIPRD
- A member or employee of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission
- The Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services
Can Anyone Help Me To Complain
A friend or relative can help you to complain.
If you are in prison, you could ask your Personal Officer, another member of prison staff or another inmate for help.
Advocacy
There may be community advocacy services that can help you to make a complaint. They are sometimes called generic advocates. But they wont exist in all areas of England.
Advocacy services are independent to the police. They should be free to use.
If you cant find an advocate to help you, talk to the police. If you have extra needs because of your mental illness or anther disability the police might need to help you find an advocate. If they do not do this they might be discriminating against you.

- Ask a support worker or key worker, if you have one.
- Ask a friend or family member to help you.

If you see a reckless driver, help keep the roads safe by reporting them. To report the car immediately, pull over to a safe location and call the police. You will need to provide the police with a basic description of the car. This is the best option when the situation is life-threatening.

File A Restraining Order
If you’re in an emergency, call 911.
If you’ve been a victim of domestic abuse and want to take legal action, you may be able to file for a protective order. Protective orders are also known as restraining orders or injunctions.
The process for obtaining a protective order differs from state to state. Your local police and court can help you get the process started. Contact your state, county, or municipal court for more information.
Generally, you have to fill out paperwork and submit it to the county courthouse. A judge may issue a temporary restraining order to protect you immediately. To get a longer-term order, your judge may want either or both a full court hearing and your abuser’s presence.
The police can enforce a protective order. If necessary, the order can include special provisions like:

How Do I Complain
You should make a complaint straight to the Police station. This would be the station you want to complain about.

Who is the Independent Office for Police Conduct?
The Independent Office for Police Conduct oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales. They also set the standards for how police should handle complaints. They are independent from the police.
If you complain directly to the IOPC they will send your complaint to the police force who you are complaining about. They will not read your complaint. The IPCC will not investigate your complaint at this stage. Let the IOPC know, if you are worried that you or someone you know will be harmed if you make a complaint against the police.

What Happens When I Complain
The police force will decide if they need to record your complaint. If your complaint needs to be recorded, the police should do this as soon as possible. Only recorded complaints are dealt with.
There is no time limit on how long a police force will take to deal with your complaint. However, once the complaint is assigned to someone, they should tell you how long it is likely to take.
Unless alternative arrangements are made, you should receive an update on the progress of your complaint at least once every 28 days
If they decide not to record your complaint, they should explain the reasons why. If the police dont record your complaint, or dont write to you at all, you can appeal.
How will the police deal with my recorded complaint?
There are different ways that the police force can deal with your complaint. They should tell you how they are going to deal with it.
You could ask for a copy of their complaints procedure.
Local resolutionThis means the police will deal with your complaint at a local level. Local resolution is usually used for less serious complaints. Less serious complaints are usually complaints that wont end up in court.
The outcome of your complaint may be:
- an explanation,
- satisfying you that appropriate action is being taken because of your complaint.

- information about your right to appeal.

How Can I Complain About A Relative Or Friends Experience
You can help a loved one to complain if they want you to.
You could do the following things.
- Give them information about how the complaints process works.
- Explain to your loved one how the complaints process works.
- Help them to write their complaint.
- Find out who to send the complaint to.
- Help to monitor progress of the complaint.
Can I complain on my relative or friends behalf?
Your loved one should give their consent to say that they are happy for you to take a complaint forward on their behalf. Get written consent from your loved one to do this. If you dont have consent the office may not accept your complaint.
Can I complain about something that has affected me?
You can make a complaint about how the police or police staff have behaved if you have been affected. You can complain even if this behaviour was not directed towards you. For example, your loved one may be more unwell because of police behaviour. This may mean that you need to give them more support.
