Recruits were typically also required to take training classes in self-improvement and legal education . On average, more than half of self-improvement training hours were related to health and fitness . A majority of the legal training focused on criminal and constitutional law and traffic law . Nearly a third of academies required basic foreign language training with an average of 9 hours per recruit.

American Police Are Inadequately Trained
Officers in the United States dont get as much instruction as police in other rich countries.
In response to the high rate at which American police kill civilians, many on the left have taken up the call for defunding the police, or abolishing the police entirely. But some policing experts are instead emphasizing a different approach that they say could reduce police killings: training officers better, longer, and on different subjects. We have one of the worst police-training academies in comparison to other democratic countries, Maria Haberfeld, a police-science professor at John Jay College, told me.
Police in the United States receive less initial training than their counterparts in other rich countriesabout five months in a classroom and another three or so months in the field, on average. Many European nations, meanwhile, have something more akin to police universities, which can take three or four years to complete. European countries also have national standards for various elements of a police officers jobsuch as how to search a car and when to use a baton. The U.S. does not.
Small police departments are already straining to provide officer training for just a few months, and might struggle to extend that initial training period, much less provide the ongoing education and refreshers that some experts recommend. The data reported in my study shed new light on the misalignment between how police officers are trained to work and what the American public expects of them on the job.
The role of the modern-day police officer has changed. Research on community expectations of police show that the U.S. public expects officers to be honest, respectful and even to provide emotional comfort when needed.
In other words, the public expects police officers to demonstrate principles of procedural justice a big concept in policing that basically means citizens should have a voice when interacting with police, that officers are transparent and resolve conflicts in a fair and impartial way.
One police training official I interviewed said most rookies fresh out of the academy have no idea what procedural justice is. They think procedural justice is about white cops shooting black people. It is not, he said it is about building partnerships with the community about trust.
Yet police academies still use the traditional, para-military training model that trains officers to be soldiers ready for combat with the enemy not culturally competent public servants ready to engage civilians in difficult dialogues.
Even officers themselves know this is a problem. When I conduct police training, police supervisors often tell me that the first thing they say to a rookie on their first day on the job is forget everything you learned in the academy, this is real police now.

How Long Does It Take To Become A Police Officer In Japan
Becoming a police officer in Japan is a much longer process. First, future police officers attend Prefectural Police Schools. If theyre fresh out of high school, it takes almost 2 years to complete pre-service training, on-the-job training, and more progressive courses, as well as mandatory exercise.
