Message To Our Communities

At Red Rocks LEA, we understand that the service of the police should be directed from needs of the communities we serve. Since opening our doors in 1992, we strive to be an academy that focuses on community policing, implicit bias, and social justice from Day One, instead of setting up militaristic practices. Because of this we think it is important to refrain from stigmatizing language and symbols that would alienate any portion of the people who trust us with their safety. Therefore, we do not engage in language such as blue lives matter and we discourage the use of thin blue line symbols. As Sir Robert Peel, the founder of modern policing once said, the police are the public and the public are the police. Anything that would separate us from the people we serve, is anathema to our program.

Part of being a great peace officer is being aware of your surroundings and taking the appropriate steps to insure the safety and well-being of those in our communities. RRCC LEA is constantly paying attention and looking for ways we need to be better. We not only serve our cadets, but the communities they will one day be a part of. We are aware of the current landscape and perception of Law Enforcement in our country, and we understand that we play a huge role in the change we wish to see. Our communities deserve the best from us, and all of us at Red Rocks strive to make this happen every day.

How To Pay For Law Enforcement Academy

When police departments are interested in hiring you to join the local law enforcement team, they sponsor your attendance at the recruit academy. At the academy, you learn everything you need to know about effectively performing police officer duties. If local police departments are not hiring, it doesn’t mean you should be passive. Instead, take a proactive approach and pay for your own law enforcement academy training. Doing so can make you a frontrunner for open positions when the department starts hiring again.

1

Contact your local or state law enforcement training academy. Ask the academy representative whether self-sponsorship is an option. Not all academies have a self-sponsorship option. If self-sponsorship is an option, request an academy self-sponsored admissions application.

2

Ensure that you meet the academy’s age and citizenship requirements. In most cases, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years of age, and have a high school diploma or GED.

3

4

Pay your academy tuition once you receive notification that you are accepted into the academy. It can take a few weeks to a few months for you to receive this notification, depending upon the academy. Attend training on your scheduled training date. The exact cost for attending the academy varies, but expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to to more than $5,000.

Should You Attend Police Academy On Your Own

NYPD Auxiliary on Twitter: " Our former Aux stopped by to say hi & let ...

In many states you have the ability to enroll in the State Certified Police Academy as an Open Enrollee meaning you are attending on your own, not being Sponsored by a police department. There are many regional police academies that train new officers for a variety of difference police departments If they have space, they allow students to enroll on their own and pay their own way to attend. These students go through the same training as those attending that have been hired by their local police department.

The disadvantage to this is that you have to pay your own way, and you are not paid while you attend. In the past most new recruits when hired would be sent to the police academy and would be paid a salary while attending. The enrollment fees would be paid by their department. As departments are able to require more from job candidates, many departments will only interview or hire those that have gone through and have graduated from a state certified police academy. The advantage is that the department saves money by not having to pay the cadet a salary while in the academy, they do not have to pay the academy tuition, and the recruit is ready to start when hired.

This trend is increasing among police departments. To find out what academies are certified in your state, contact the POST agency in your state. Only you can determine if it is worth going through an academy on your own.
